or a 100KW (Gross power) engine, only around 35% of the fuel energy gets converted to electrical energy. The balance is thermal loss and waste heat. Capture this waste heat and you not only increase the gensets efficiency (which is invariably by a substantial amount), but you also provide your customers with free heat and hot water. You've also turned your genset into something that is very desirable - a combined heat and power (CHP) system. The means by which this is done is quite simple - heat exchangers. One of the companies at the forefront of this 'genset revolution' is EJ Bowman, the specialist UK manufacturer of heat exchangers for power generation. “We have definitely noticed a shift in attitude,” EJ Bowman's Sales Manager, Jamie Pratt, tells WIP. “With fuel prices rising again, diesel powered genset manufacturers are looking to CHP as a way to offer a premium product, with better margins and provide customers with the ultimate tangible benefit - free heat and hot water.” To illustrate just how tangible that benefit is, Bowman has developed the

following illustration. A typical 100kw diesel engine will generate around 35kw of electrical energy, giving an average efficiency of around 35%. Recovering the heat lost from the exhaust system and converting it to hot water provides another 40kw of energy, increasing the efficiency to 75%. When waste heat from the cooling system is recovered, this is increased by a further 10kw, increasing the overall efficiency to 85%. "It's possible to achieve an engine efficiency level of up to 92% by including oil, fuel and charge air coolers, putting the overall efficiency of a genset on a par with the latest condensing heating boilers,” says Jamie. “The fact that the gen-set is providing electricity, heating and hot water at such a high efficiency, makes it an increasingly attractive proposition for independent power applications,” he explains. EJ Bowman has developed one of the most comprehensive ranges of heat exchangers for gensets and, using their products, up to 60% of all heat lost from the engine can be reclaimed and converted into energy. Bowman's standard range comprises heat exchangers for genset engines with power ratings from 16KW to 1MW “Over the past few years, the trend towards smaller, more compact engine powered gensets has accelerated and these units are becoming increasingly important for independent power generation,” reports Jamie Pratt. “With that in mind, developing our new '2-25' and 2-32 compact unit was a logical extension to our range of heat exchangers.”

Product quality is at the heart of EJ Bowman's success and this can be seen in both the materials used and the manufacturing processes employed. “We use a fully-welded, all stainlesssteel construction on all our exhaust gas units, as this provides the level of durability needed to handle the extreme temperatures found in modern exhaust gas systems,” concludes Jamie. “We don't compromise either - the same standards and specifications apply to all our units, from the largest to the smallest.”
