As a result of your feedback, we’ve organized the brochure by age categories, and then generally under three major sections: Arts, Community Learning, and Recreation. Not only will you discover classes, workshops and other learning opportunities, you will also find special events and activities, community resources and other helpful information. While our printed brochure is accurate at the time of printing, please refer to on-line resources and our websites for our latest offerings or most up-to-date activities and programs.

Instructors Kathleen Ainscough Kathleen has studied and created fine art, costumes, and textile arts for over 35 years. She works with a variety of media and techniques including painting in oils and acrylic, textile arts, handmade papers, digital image transfer, mono printing, and stencilling with dyes and paints. Kath has exhibited, managed events and exhibits and facilitated a variety of workshops highlighting international artists and experts. She also offers floor cloth and mixed media painting workshops. www.kathleenainscough.com Anne Boa Anne Boa is an award winning and published Interior Designer with 20+ years of Residential Design experience throughout BC, Ontario, Mexico and Hawaii. In a fun, yet informative way, she’ll get you looking at Residential Interior Design and she will help you develop your own style and vision. Tammy Brockmeyer Tammy is the mother of three rambunctious boys and loves to craft with kids. She has led the Light Up Bowen lantern-making workshop for the past five years, implementing varying media and designs each year. A team manager for Destination Imagination on Bowen Island and is excited to share her love of art and focus her creativity into inspiring Bowen kids to discover new skills and abilities.

Deborah Bramm Deborah’s Nia journey began with “love at first step” in Toronto in 1996. She has a Nia Brown Belt and has been teaching Nia since 1999 and on Bowen Island since 2007. Being a Nia instructor gives her a deepening sense of gratitude, creative self-expression, freedom, and delight. Jared Brown Jared Brown is the founder of HYPE drama, which teaches high energy, professional level Drama Classes for young people. A graduate of The National Theatre School of Canada; Jared has a rich and diverse resume, spanning over 20 years through theatre, Television, and radio. Jared brings a wealth of experience to all of his classes, sharing lessons passed on to him from numerous acting professionals throughout the world, to ensure that your child has a truly unique and inspiring dramatic experience. Rachel Canning At age 16 Rachel started cycling to rehab her knee after a ski racing accident and has been cycling competitively ever since. Representing BC at the Canada Summer Games, Western Canada Summer Games, senior and junior Road and Track Nationals as well as in Europe. In 2011 Rachel certified as a NCCP cycling coach and works with individuals, clubs as well as the velodrome, TaG cycling, and various outdoor learn to ride and race programs. Apart from her time spent racing and coaching, Rachel is also a support worker and program leader for the mentally and physically disabled. She recently graduated with a degree in Kinesiology at UBC.


Instructors Carol Cram Carol is a Brown Belt Nia Instructor who has taught on Bowen Island since 2009. She credits Nia for motivating her to move her body in a way that gives her joy and fills her heart and spirit. Carol is also a novelist and active on the Bowen Island Arts Council. Natasha Currah After teaching yoga for 15 years, Natasha began focusing on injury prevention and rehabilitation through joint health. Whether she is working with a high level athlete or someone new to fitness, she is able to challenge her students ability to control their movements while having fun. Natasha is certified as a Functional Conditioning Mobility Specialist (FRC) and in Functional Range Assessment (FRA). Natasha also has a background in teaching pre/ postnatal movement and was a Birth Doula in Toronto before moving to Bowen in 2014. She is part of the Bowen Birth Collective as well as an self-care advocate for women. Meribeth Deen Meribeth is a freelance writer, researcher, broadcaster, film-maker and a recovering small-town newspaper editor. As a writing coach she is passionate about helping people to make their writing better, to make it publishable, and to make it powerful. She continues to research and learn, taking inspiration from the two small humans who treat her body like a habitat.

Alida Edwards Alida has over 12 years in fitness experience and just recently became certified to teach fitness classes. She has lived on Bowen Island since 2011 with her family. Susanne Herrington Susanne moved toBowen Island in 2017, having just repatriated with her family after living overseas for 23 years. Jazzercise has been her workout of choice since discovering it during her first year abroad. She has been a certified instructor and franchise owner for the past 23 years and has a love of the program, the workout, and the people she has met through teaching it. Susanne is also a special education teacher, loves to travel, bake and get lost in a good book. Jane Holland Jane has been involved in the fitness industry for over 25 years. She is a canfitpro certified instructor and, over the years, she has taught a variety of fitness classes such as Spin, Boxing and Step. She has also done some personal training and was involved in the Healthy Heart program. Jane enjoys helping people of all ages find their balance in a healthy lifestyle. When she isn’t teaching classes you will find her relaxing on the beach or walking the various trails on Bowen.

Instructors Gail Lotenberg Gail has worked in the field of Contemporary dance for decades. When teaching, she loves to introduce students to their physical and creative potential. Gail Lotenberg is a certified STOTT Pilates instructor who shares with students her deep knowledge about the body from over two decades as a professional dancer and an amateur athlete. Jennifer Love Jennifer Love has dabbled in various craft and art forms since childhood, but attending the Textile Arts program at Capilano College was a life-changer for her. She is a passionate advocate for textile arts and was for many years the Representative for BC for the Surface Design Association (SDA), an international organization that promotes awareness and appreciation of textile-inspired art and design. In recent years, she has been exploring the wonders of mono-printing and collage on paper. She has exhibited widely on the Sunshine Coast, on Bowen Island and in Vancouver. In July 2018 she moved from Pender Harbour to Gibsons, and continues to share her inspiration, methods and joy for art through workshops and advocacy.

Rebecca Lyne Rebecca joined our fitness team from Coquitlam, with 15 years of experience teaching classes and personal training as a BCRPA Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer. She has trained children, youth, adults, and seniors and has worked hard to help provide quality programming options to all these groups on Bowen Island. Her passion lies with fitness, outdoor play, and fresh air learning; especially a combination of those 3 elements with kids. Rebecca has been on Bowen since 2016 with her husband, 3 children, dog, cats and guinea pigs and enjoys being part of such a small, close knit community. Tracy McLachlan Family Place’s coordinator, Tracy, has been exploring her passion for the natural world through drawing, painting, mixed media work and experimentation. As a wildlife artist, her recent paintings recall her time spent observing, sketching and photographing wildlife in natural settings both in Southern Africa and Canada. Reflecting on her own experience as an emerging artist, Tracy believes in the power of encouragement; she looks forward to inspiring young artists to creatively connect with their own surroundings and interests through art.


Instructors Leila Menssouri Leila was born in France, where she studied English Literature and worked as a support staff member in the French school system. During this time she gained significant experience assisting children with various levels of French proficiency. She then moved to Dublin, Ireland where she worked on French accounts for various global companies. Leila has been living on Bowen Island with her family since 2013. Tina Overbury A writer, story coach and the host of the TinaOShow, collecting and telling stories from the core. She’s the co-owner of Intentional Success and says: stories are like toddlers, they will follow you around, tugging, hanging off of you until you give them a good listening to. She leads Story from the Core - a program that supports communicators with a call to write their book, keynote and cultivate their online story. She is also the founder of Live Your Best Story - a weekend retreat of deep listening. Carol Robb Carol Robb is a volunteer instructor with Fung Loy Kok Taiost Tai Chi, founder Master Moy Lin Shin. Carol has been a Tai Chi instructor through Bowen Community Recreation since 1987. Please check out our international website at www.taoist.org

Alan Saugstad School Principal and long-time PE Instructor. B.C. Certified teacher with 25 years experience teaching all ages from Kindergarten to grade 9.

Sheana Stevenson Teaching spin classes since 1997. She has a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Victoria and was a professional fitness trainer and tester for the Department of National Defense until she moved to Vancouver in 2003. She has been living on Bowen Island since 2008 with her husband Scott, daughter Livea and son Lochlan. Aubin Van Berckel Helen Wallwork Erin Naismith Aubin van Berckel, Helen Wallwork and Erin Naismith are part of the Mother Goose team of trained facilitators that run the parent-child program. The members of the Mother Goose team have diverse, extensive backgrounds working with children, youth and families in educational settings and delight in running this parent-child program for our community’s youngest families.

General Information The Bowen Island Community Recreation (BICR) office is located at 1041 Mount Gardner Road, in a joint-use facility with the Bowen Island Community School (BICS). Facilities at the school include a gymnasium, weight room, community-use rooms and a kitchen. Important to Note Registration: FALL & WINTER registration opens August 20th, 2019 at 8:30 AM Register online at: www.bowencommunityrecreation.com Payment: in full is required at the time of registration by cash, credit card, debit or cheque. Cheques should be made payable to: Bowen Island Municipality (BIM). GST will be added to the prices of all adult programs. Financial Assistance: is available for Community Recreation programs. Please contact Shauna Jennings, Manager of Recreation and Community Services for details.

Refund Policy: Program Cancellation: A full refund will be issued for classes cancelled by Community Recreation (pro-rated if into the session). No administration fee will apply. Requests for Refunds: • Program and day camp refunds will be issued if requests are submitted a minimum of five (5)

business days prior to the first day of the program. A 10% administration fee will apply. • A pro-rated refund for programs will be issued if withdrawal occurs two (2) full business day prior to the second class, a 10% administration fee will apply. No refunds will be issued after that time except for medical reasons (doctor’s note required). • Swim classes will not be refunded unless the withdrawing attendee’s spot can be filled. A 10% administration fee will apply. • Refunds will be issued by crediting your ActiveNet account or refunding to the credit card used for registration. Refund cheques will be issued by request only, please allow 2-4 weeks for cheque processing.

Holidays: The office and weight room are closed and most programs are not scheduled to run on Statutory Holidays and some holiday weekends. Please call ahead or check the program listing.

Warning: this technique is addictive! Jennifer will demonstrate how to create quick and beautiful monoprints on paper using a gel plate. Learn the fundamentals of how to create layers of colour, shape and pattern, using stencils, stamps and a plethora of found and homemade tools. You will experience the luscious layers that are so unique to the gel plate. You will see that the pieces that are not planned but are allowed to evolve spontaneously, are usually the best. This technique offers the opportunity to really let go and let your creative spirit take charge.

The Mother Goose Program is a free ParentChild program for parents and caregivers and their newborn-two year old children. Using interactive storytelling, rhyme and song, this beneficial, friendly program includes a snack. Priority given to participants who have not yet attended the program before.

3783 We have hotdogs and pumpkins! You bring your own age-appropriate carving tools! Max 24 pumpkins, 1 per child. Each child must be supervised by at least 1 adult while carving. Parent participation is mandatory, as supervision of the child participating in the activity is the parent’s responsibility. The Irly Learning program offers free parent-child activity days to practice fun, hands-on early learning skills. The event is co-sponsored by the Bowen Children’s Centre and Irly and is part of a series. Watch for more offerings during the year!

Homework Club (8-12 Yrs)

Location: BICS Library Activity Fee: Free 28 Sessions Tuesdays & Thursdays, September 17 December 19, 2019 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM 3784 The Learning Lounge has returned to the name Homework Club but is still the new, restyled program: a free, drop-in program with fun activities. The program includes a snack, action breaks, group and individual design, challenge, and creative activities


Community Learning as well as tips advice on organization, homework management. This is a free program thanks to sponsors and donations. The program is open to students grade 4-7 from any school/education path on Bowen Island. Participants and parents need to sign a participation agreement form.

Canadian Red Cross and Babysitting (11-15 Yrs)

The babysitting course created by the Canadian Red Cross helps youngsters age 11+ learn what to do in the event of an emergency. The course also offers an overview of the basic responsibilities that

go with being a babysitter, and how youth and how youth can reduce the risks of certain incidents by practicing safety tips and learning essential child care abilities. Please bring pens, lunch, a snack, refillable water bottle and comfy clothes. Space is limited, register today. Class fee does not include the manual fee $16 cash or cheque made out to Lifesavers on the day for the babysitters new manual, which is mandatory.

CPR/AED First Aid (12 Yrs Plus)

Location: BICS Room TBD Activity Fee: $55.00 1 Day Workshop Saturday, October 26, 2019 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM 3780 Ockeloen, Amanda Courses on CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) provide the skills needed to recognize and respond to cardiovascular emergencies and choking for adults. Included in the training is how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). This course is suitable for workplace or general safety interest. Includes the latest CPR techniques. A three year certification is awarded upon successful completion. Upon successful completion, a three year certification will be awarded that is recognized in the work place.
