Dear Friends, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” said our Lord Jesus Christ. What did he mean by that?

The story is told of a young man who once found a £10 pound note in the street. His heart leapt with joy and he resolved from that moment to walk everywhere with his eyes fixed firmly to the pavement in front of him. After several years this man had accumulated 29,516 buttons, 54,172 pins, 12 pence, a bent back and a measly disposition. At the same time he had lost the glory of the sun, the beauty of the stars, the smiles of friends, the blossom of the trees, the blueness of the sky and the entire joy of living! Our priorities matter. The quote from Jesus comes from the Sermon on the Mount, perhaps the best known of all of Jesus' discourses. In this part of the sermon Jesus is concerned about priorities - what comes first in our life, and what issues are secondary. He tells us not to worry about food and drink and clothes; reminding us that God knows we have need of these things. His conclusion is meant to make us sit up and think "But seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Jesus is concerned about the things we prize most dearly. Our 'treasure' can only be in one of two places - in heaven or on earth. The things on earth, our possessions, are not safe. They offer no permanent security. Either they will leave us, or we will leave them. In fact, possessions are more likely to bring anxiety than security as we worry about losing them. Therefore, says Jesus, bank in heaven where things are secure, not on earth. Live your life for the things which last, not for those things which are impermanent.

Anxiety can never be cured by getting more possessions, but it can be cured by the realisation that we have a heavenly Father who supplies all our needs, both physical and spiritual.

So Jesus tells us to get our priorities right. The first thing to do is to live our lives under God's authority. Recognise that Jesus is the King. Also allow God's righteousness to dictate the way we live and act, and as we do this we are assured by God that he will provide the necessities of life. When we get our priorities right we discover the reality of a heavenly Father who cares for us and perhaps in these stressful days something almost as precious. Instead of anxiety we find contentment.
