President’s Farewell Time marches on and after 14 years of founding, managing and living with this outstanding wine ‘Challenge’ I am happy to announce that there will be an ownership and management change in 2017. I will be stepping back from the front line and my business associate Mr Ross Anderson is taking over the reins. The Challenge will continue to showcase six great new world wine nations in the same style however I’m sure it will be with renewed vigour and a continued imprimatur of excellence. Ross and I will continue to work together during the next few years however I will be taking a minor role with many holidays planned but definitely attending the trophy dinner – possibly the most important and exciting wine dinner on the show calendar. Thank you to the Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates who have always given me a warm welcome and who have embraced this wine show wholeheartedly over the years. To our winemakers, sponsors and wine lovers, thank you for your support and friendship. Lastly yet most importantly to my judges: In the past James Halliday, Robert Joseph, Fabricio Portelli, Dan Berger and the current six giants of wine knowledge. Thank you for your support and friendship and for teaching me so much about excellence in the wine industry. With pride I hand over the baton and look forward to seeing these results for many years to come.

Chairman’s Message It was another year of changes at the Six Nations Wine Challenge, with Canada entering for the first time, and two new faces at the judging tables. They were Canadian judge Christopher Waters and our new USA representative, Jon Bonné. Both fitted into the competition seamlessly, and both achieved plenty of success with their wine selections. As you may know, each judge has the opportunity to invite 100 of the best wines (as he sees it) from his own country. The USA of course has a larger wine industry than any of the other countries, while Canada is somewhat smaller, but both came away with accolades. It is a humbling experience to be involved in this competition – both as a judge and as a selector. Nothing can be taken for granted. A selection which has already won mountains of accolades in its own country cannot be assumed a certain award-winner here. While there is a remarkable degree of agreement among the six judges, their disparate backgrounds to some extent conspire against unanimity of opinion. One trophy wine about which we agreed to an extent I hadn’t witnessed before, was the Stark-Conde 2015 Field Blend, a roussanne, chenin, verdelho, viognier from South Africa. This wine scored three first placings, two seconds, and an eleventh. Every judge rated it, and this is a very good sign, but such a near-unanimous high ranking is extremely rare. Not far behind it was New Zealand’s Akarua 2014 Bannockburn Pinot Noir, which won its class with two first placings, a second, a third, a tenth and a single no-ranking. In a big class (of 50 wines), that was a clear favourite winning by the length of the straight, as they say at the racetrack. But it’s probably invidious to single out specific wines, as there were so many excellent wines, and the margins between winner and runner-up, or between a medal and no medal, were often slim. We all look forward to a return bout next year. So please, in your respective countries, spread the word about the Six Nations Wine Challenge. It really is a worthwhile and indeed unique testing ground for fine wine.

Sparkling Wine

WINE OF SHOW

Roederer Estate L’Ermitage Brut Chardonnay, Pinot Noir 2007 Winemaker: Arnaud Weyrich Region: Anderson Valley, CA, USA

Jean-Claude Rouzaud, then president of Champagne Louis Roederer and fifth generation descendant of the founder, selected the 580-acre Anderson Valley vineyard and winery site in 1982.

Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes grown in top choice vineyards

Roederer Estate Brut is the first California sparkling wine to be produced by Champagne Louis Roederer, further building upon a 200-year tradition of fine winemaking from this family owned company. Roederer’s unique winemaking style is based on two elements: complete ownership of its vineyards and the addition of oak-aged reserve wines to each year’s blend or cuvée.

Handcrafted from vine to bottle

Not just a job but a labour of love

John and Ann Martini moved to Anthony Road in 1973 at the urging of a friend that touted the joys of grape growing in the Finger Lakes. They loaded up 2 young children and left their home in Baltimore, where John worked for WR Grace to set up their farming life on the west side of Seneca Lake. Surprisingly neither Ann nor John had an agricultural background, unless you count John’s youthful summers at his grandparent’s farm in Melvin, Illinois. But together and with the help of family and friends they planted their first 5-acres, Foch, in the summer of 1973.

8

Keuka Spring Vineyards is located in the Finger Lakes Wine Country of New York State and for 30 years has been consistently recognized for excellence. Initially. The owners Len and Judy Wiltberger intentionally kept production small, to about 2,000 cases each year, hand-bottled and hand-labelled – which is truly boutique in size. As business grew, more and more wine was sold and to meet customer demand, they expanded production to approximately 8500 cases per year – remaining boutique!. Len and Judy continue to run the business today, aided by their hardworking staff.

Wines of character and beauty

The International Wine and Spirit Competition London 2015 named Rapaura Springs as the World’s Best Sauvignon Blanc and New Zealand Wine Producer of the year. The journey of our Rapaura Springs wines begins far from our vineyards, at a point where the earth claims a share of the Wairau River. After a six month journey through a rocky aquifer, the water is released to a spring that weaves through our vineyard. This spring, depicted on our label, provides both the crystal clear, pure, water for our vines and guides the philosophy behind our family winery.

Collaboration between man, earth, and vine

Sandhi is a Californian boutique winery focusing on select vineyards from the St. Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County. The company was founded in 2010 by Rajat Parr, the wine director for Michael Mina Restaurants, and winemaker Sashi Moorman. They both are now owners of Sandhi and together make all winemaking decisions.

Crafting wine requires patience

Stark-Condé Wines is located in the picturesque Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch. It is a dramatic valley with steep changes in vineyard elevation from 150 to 600 metres, making for a range of sites with distinct characteristics. At Stark-Condé we stick to traditional winemaking methods: open tank fermentation, meticulous sorting of grapes, handpunch-downs, basket pressing, and maturation in small French oak barrels. The shortest line between two points may not always be the right one. Careful barrel maturation is the key to the elegant style of wine for which Stark-Condé is known.

Contemporary wines of superb quality

McWilliam’s Wines have always believed that quality wines are made by people, not companies. As well as a long list of family winemakers and employees, McWilliam’s is blessed by a team of staff that share the passion for their range of wines. The Australian landscape is as varied as it is vast. From hot, rural locations to mountainous cool-climate regions, the New South Wales vineyards from which McWilliam’s source their fruit embody this diversity. The McWilliam’s winemaking philosophy centres on the quality of fruit and this means that there must be an intimate understanding across all regions of the complex relationship that exists between the land, the climate and the winemaker.

Akarua Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2014 Winemaker: Andrew Keenleyside Region: Otago New Zealand

Church Road McDonald Series Merlot 2013 Winemaker: Chris Scott Region: Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand

A strong commitment to the region

Central Otago, as a viticultural region, arguably more than any other New Zealand wine growing region, has rapidly gained international market and media credibility for producing pinot noir. Pioneers in the 1980’s such as Alan Brady at Gibbston, Vernon and Sue Burgess at Alexandra and Rolf and Lois Mills in Wanaka, had defied all nay-sayers by producing serious wines under the most challenging circumstances and this activated a surge of enthusiasm and investment in the industry over the next two decades.

Every detail matters

Church Road Winery applies traditional winemaking techniques to the very best of the Hawke’s Bay harvest. The winery, one of the oldest in Hawke’s Bay, was founded in 1897, and the wines have earned a glowing reputation, becoming one of the most sought-after wine brands in New Zealand. Church Road Winery celebrates the life and legacy of Tom McDonald, legendary winemaker, with their premium Church Road McDonald Series wine range. Tom McDonald (19071987) devoted his lifetime to producing outstanding New Zealand wines at the site of the current Church Road Winery. This dedication to creating fine wines saw him forge both a remarkable legacy and enviable future for the Hawke’s Bay region and Church Road wines today.

Wines with altitude

Here on the farm Dwarsrivier, our winemaker David Nieuwoudt leads a ‘team with attitude’ to produce award-winning wines from our highaltitude vineyards. The secret behind our ‘wines with altitude’? A unique terroir and a pure, virusfree environment. Our commitment to responsible living is reflected in everything we do, from the way we manage our facilities to the audits we participate in and the special projects we support. We care about people and we care about the environment. But most of all, we care about how responsibly we, as people, interact with the pristine Cederberg Wilderness around us.

12

The Rustenberg Estate was founded in 1682 and is nestled in the valley of the Simonsberg Mountain in South Africa’s premium wine region, Stellenbosch. Rustenberg’s rich heritage and ethos has been informed by many centuries of human influence striving to understand and work with nature to produce wines of distinct character true to their terroir, variety and informed style. A range of slopes and aspects allows site-specific plantings that enhance varietal characteristics. The Barlow family has now been at Rustenberg for over 70 years: the longest period any one family has owned the farm.

We study and respect nature, for our future generations

After working in Cape Town for 20 years, Neville Dorrington and his family decided it was time to move to the countryside. Lovers of good food and collectors of fine wine, the search for a wine farm began. Months and miles later, it was decided to buy an undeveloped farm. “Lets do it all from scratch”. In 2010, ten years after our first harvest, we removed all Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot so as to concentrate on the cultivars best suited to our farm: Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Shiraz. A very good decision.

A Tradition of Excellence

L’Ecole N° 41 is a second generation, family-owned artisan winery located in the historic Frenchtown School depicted on our label. Founded in 1983, we are the third oldest winery in the Walla Walla Valley. As a traditional brick and mortar winery, we are engaged in growing and making 100% of our wines. Our focus is on terroir-driven, distinctive, and expressive wines. This is achieved by our over thirty years of winemaking experience combined with dedicated, long-term relationships with some of the oldest and most proven vineyards in the Walla Walla and Columbia Valleys.

Global Leaders in Sustainable Wine Production

New Zealand is a land like no other and our wine is not only a reflection of our unique geology, but also our deeply-rooted commitment to sustainable wine production. Our rare combination of richly mineral soil and coastal climate, our ambitiously innovative pioneering spirit and our absolute passion for quality, all come together to deliver pure, intense and diverse wines brimming with flavour. Whilst geographically diverse, Marlborough’s maritime climate, long cool growing season, and young fertile soils promote intense varietal characters, fresh natural acidity and succulent ripe fruit flavours that the world has quickly embraced.

Dessert Wines Chateau Ste. Michelle & Dr. Loosen Eroica Single Berry Select Riesling 2008 Winemaker: Bib Bertheau & Ernst Loosen Region: Columbia Valley WA, USA

Old & new philosophies

Eroica is a labour of love for two of the world’s great Riesling producers, where old and new philosophies intermingle to create exceptional techniques. From the Old World, Dr. Loosen Estate of Germany, and from the New, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. Together, an extraordinary Riesling is crafted using Washington state grapes, since 1999. Inspired by Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the name Eroica reflects not only the variety and site, but also our heritage. Our shared history has been shaped from elegantly refined German inspiration and boldly developed from Washington roots. For more than 200 years, Dr. Loosen Estate in the Mosel Valley has produced fine Riesling. In 1999, Ernst Loosen approached Chateau Ste. Michelle with the idea of joining forces after discovering the winery’s Cold Creek Vineyard Riesling. Together, they now produce a luxury Riesling that’s world-renowned.
