A note from the President Congratulations to all of the trophy and medal winners. This is an outstanding achievement for your winemakers and for your companies. New Zealand is the proud winner of Nation of Show, not only rugby champions but wine champions as well! Sadly we are saying goodbye to the Argentinean winemakers next year and until such time as their winemakers are able to take part in the numbers this Challenge requires they will remain friends set for a possible return in the future. Due to the complexity of our aggregate scoring system each nation is required to enter 100 wines in order to make the judging and scoring well balanced. Argentina is finding it harder to do so and we look forward to the time when they can return to the Challenge. The remaining judges and I thank Fabricio Portelli for his participation as their judge over the last three years – he is not only a skilled wine authority he is also a really good bloke! On the brighter side the Canadian winemakers are set to join us in 2016 keeping the Six in Six Nations! We are welcoming Ontario-based Christopher Waters, Editor of Vines Magazine and senior wine judge to represent Canada in the judging in Sydney next August. Ms. Judith Kennedy - President Six Nations Wine Challenge

The Judging Team. L-R: Fabricio Portelli (Argentina), Eduardo Brethauer (Chile), Bob Campbell MW (New Zealand), Michael Fridjhon (South Africa), Dan Berger (USA), Huon Hooke (Australia). SEATED: Judith Kennedy (President).

THOUGHTS FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF JUDGES To have on your table 600 of the best wines of the New World is a big challenge for our senses, but most of all a privilege for the judges. There is not time to get tired. You are so concentrated, so excited and so curious, that the time flows and twists inside your glass, blending with the lights of the beautiful and cosmopolitan Sydney. Perhaps there is no other city in the world to get together six judges and a various selection of their viticulture. The different characters of the wines, born in the most distinctive origins, from the dizzy mountains of The Andes to the wavy terraces of Tasmania, match perfectly with the colouring spirit of the city. Why this challenge is so special and transcendental for the New World? First of all the wineries don’t choose to participate. Previously they must receive an invitation of the judges. Therefore the level of the wines is very high and really reveals the potential of the different valleys. Second because it is a huge opportunity to savour what the New World wines are delivering in terms of quality. The Six Nations is an open window that shows the excitement of a viticulture that is always moving forward, discovering new spots, innovating with varieties, experimenting with styles, reflecting the tradition and bright future of the New World scene. And finally because this annual challenge helps us to demolish some myths. Nobody can predict which country will win a class Trophy or the best in show. This year New Zealand really seems to be following the steps of the All Blacks. But who knows in the coming seasons? The Six Nations Wine Challenge represents a crucible of styles, wishes and truly unexpected results. And always reminds us that we must be humble and unprejudiced to the nature of the grapes. Eduardo Brethauer - 2015 Chairman

WINE OF SHOW Class 16. Dessert Wines Wine:

Noble Riesling 2014

Company:

Framingham “Restoring the balance”

Region:

Marlborough, New Zealand

Our Riesling vines are amongst the oldest in Marlborough, planted in 1981 they were some of the first vines grafted on phylloxera resistant rootstock in the area.

Winemaker: Dr Andrew Hedley

In a world of increasing blandness we remain individual. In a cluttered wine landscape, where so many seem the same, we believe in doing things differently. We take a low impact approach to vineyard management with a lot of hard work and a strong environmental focus avoiding systemic chemicals and planting flowers to encourage biodiversity. Accredited as a sustainable vineyard and winery under the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand program, our estate vineyard is also Certified Organic through BioGro NZ Ltd – further reflecting our efforts to bring things back into balance. Framingham.co.nz

4

In addition to Wine of Show and Dessert Wine Trophy Framingham was also was awarded the following two medals: Dessert Wine Second Place and Double Gold Medal: F-Series Trockenbeerenauslese Riesling 2014 Dessert Wine Gold Medal: F Series Auslese Riesling 2014

Winemaker Dr. Andrew Hedley

The key to our individuality is small batch winemaking. Combining small batches of wine from different parts of the vineyard, we build depth of flavour and texture. Strictly limited quantities allow us to take risks and follow our hearts. When Framingham wines are sold out, they’re gone. 5

We are steeped in our family heritage and we have a history of innovation that inspires our future direction. Success is never about the individual and it cannot be achieved alone. Our company has thrived beyond four generations because of the loyalty we have to each other and the vision that binds and holds us close. Regardless of what generation of the Brown family steering Brown Brothers we talk about the fact that it is all about the wine. That is true; we are devoted totally to the quality of the wines we produce.

Class 5. Chardonnay Wine:

Elzette Chardonnay 2014

Company:

Iona Vineyards “Our practices ensure vital vines and grapes”

Region:

Elgin, South Africa

Winemaker: Werner Muller

In early 1997, Andrew Gunn, an engineer by training was contemplating his next career move. Having always loved the outdoors, the prospect of farming appealed to him and feeling young and energetic enough to start a new career, left the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg to begin the search for the ‘perfect’ wine farm. The philosophy at Iona is to make wine that expresses the soils and climate as closely as possible, making use of sustainable farming methods and to maximise the use of natural products in farming and winemaking. Everything is done in-house. From the vineyard to the wine distribution, for Andrew and Rozy, Iona is the sole source of their focus, passion and great joy.

Class 6. White Blends Wine:

Babiana Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay 2013

Company:

Vondeling Wines Searching for the ‘almost perfect wine’

Region:

Paarl, South Africa

Winemaker: Matthew Copeland

This historic farm was originally named Vondeling, from whence the wines take their name. It was granted to Swedish immigrant Oloff Bergh by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1704. Shady oak trees surround the graciously restored original Farm House, built in 1750. The farm has a three-centuries-old winemaking tradition dating back to the early 1700’s. This working wine farm has a tranquil atmosphere with panoramic mountain and vineyard views, and scenic hikes with Table Bay and Mountain visible in the distance. The area is rich in indigenous fynbos and four species are unique to the Paardeberg mountain –

noctiflora,

Class 7. Other White Varieties Wine:

Reserve Chenin Blanc 2014

Company: De Morgenzon “Combining New World-style fruit with Old World-style elegance” Region:

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Winemaker: Carl Van Der Merwe

All wine estates in the Western Cape are beautiful and all have unique terroir. However, we believe that DeMorgenzon is the most extraordinary of them all. Our slopes rise from about 200m to nearly 400m above sea level and our vistas embrace Cape Town, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cape Hangklip, the Hottentots Holland mountains, Helderberg and Simonsberg with the ocean as a backdrop. While we could call ourselves ‘mountain vineyards’ we prefer to be known as ‘garden vineyards’. In Spring specially chosen wildflowers flourish between our vines. We have no doubt that a biodiverse and ecologically sensitive environment produces infinitely better grapes and the beauty of our gardens is captured in every bottle of our wine. demorgenzon.co.za

Now in the expert hands of the next two generations, Baileyana wines remain true to her pioneering spirit, as well as to the genuine, elegant style she exuded when walking into any room. We are proud to have been one of the first ten central coast vineyards to become SIP™ certified in 2008. Historically, we have always farmed in a careful and responsible manner that takes into account all facets of the world around us, and would continue to do so whether or not this certification program was developed. nivenfamilywines.com

Masada Bloc Syrah 2012

Company:

Reustle-Prayer Rock Vineyards “Drink your wine with a happy heart

Region:

Umpqua Valley, Oregon USA

Winemaker: Stephen Reustle

Stephen and Gloria Reustle moved to California from the greater New York City area to spend a year exploring wine regions that could grow world-class wine. In 2001, Stephen ended up purchasing 200 acres in the Umpqua Valley of Oregon for its climate, right soils, water access, and steep south-facing slopes... at first sight, it reminded him of the Burgundian hillsides in France. And yes there is a prayer rock at the vineyard, the meeting place for Stephen and his son in the mornings to pray to God for blessing over their vineyard. reustlevineyards.com

Class 13. Other Red Varieties Wine:

Cabernet Franc 2012

Company:

Warwick Wine Estates “An environmentally friendly approach”

Region:

Stellenbosch, South Africa

Winemaker: Nic Van Aarde

Stan Ratcliffe purchased Warwick on April 1st 1964 after an extensive search for the best ‘terroir’ in the Cape. Together with his wife Norma, they soon realized the potential of the extraordinary property and began planting Cabernet Sauvignon. Norma Ratcliffe is often referred to as ‘The First Lady’ as one of the first woman to make wine in South Africa. Norma is the family matriarch and has been head-winemaker at Warwick since the late 1970’s. In 1984 the first Warwick Cabernet Sauvignon called ‘La Femme Bleu’- the Blue Lady - was released. Norma had a natural talent for making great wines and in 1986 Warwick Trilogy was released, a Bordeaux style blend which has since become a flagship of the South African Wine Industry.

Class 14. Bordeaux Blends Wine:

Merlot, Malbec 2013

Company:

Matua Valley Wines “One Massive Gamble”

Region:

Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Winemaker: Peter Turner and Nikolai St George

It’s hard to separate New Zealand and Sauvignon Blanc these days, but we were the first to put them together, planting the first Sauvignon Blanc in 1969 and producing our first bottle in 1974. You could say we’ve changed the way the world drinks wine. Has it gone to our heads? Hardly. But it has fired us up to do more. Matua began with a vision shared by Bill and Ross Spence - to revolutionise the New Zealand wine industry by making wines with the best fruit from the best vineyards. A philosophy that still stands today and has earned us international recognition for our pioneering work. And this trophy wine shows that it’s no secret that Hawke’s Bay has a talent for producing bumper red wines, the hot sunny climate and chilly coastal breeze is a winning combination for ultimate fruit ripening. The gamble pays off again. matua.co.nz

Class 15. Non Bordeaux Red Blends Wine:

Brokenstone Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc 2013

Company:

Sacred Hill “Sheer, delicious drinkability”

Region:

Hawke’s Bay & Marlborough, New Zealand

Winemaker: Tony Bish

Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. We know how lucky we are having a spectrum of very special vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough. Our teams work hard to preserve the integrity of the fruit they deliver into the winery. From our vineyards in Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough, we create memorable wines from different vineyards, barrels and batches delivering the layers, textures and flavours that make Sacred Hill wines so deliciously drinkable.

Class 17. Fortified Wine The Exhibition Class Wine:

Artizan Rare Muscat Non Vintage

Company:

Gralyn Estate “Perseverance and self belief”

Region:

Margaret River, Western Australia

Winemaker: Dr Bradley Hutton

Graham and Merilyn Hutton’s vineyard was planted in 1975 as a diversification to their beef farming. Today they have well and truly found a niche at the top end of premium producer in Margaret River. The estate is recognized as one of Australia’s most prestigious boutique wineries having been awarded numerous gold medals and trophies at national and international wine shows. In 1978 Merilyn and Graham named their new venture Gralyn Cellars (a combination of both their Christian names) and opened the region’s first cellar door sales outlet. In 1978 the Huttons also made 30 gallons of Vintage Port which was to be the basis for continued fortified wine production. Today Gralyn Estate is well known for their range of high quality fortified wines, as well as a large selection of very popular sweet wines, premium dry red wines and award winning Chardonnay. gralyn.com.au

I wish to express my appreciation to all involved in the 2015 6 Nation Wine Challenge. From U.S. Ambassador John Berry, 6 Nation Wine Challenge President Judith Kennedy, U.S. wine judge Dan Berger and each of our other International Judges as well as everyone working behind the scenes... thank you. I can’t think of any other honor I would rather have for our vineyard and winery. I am most grateful.
