Still yet there is one story that has a Spanish immigrant getting credit for creating a shirt much like the guayabera where it had pockets on the front for cigars that he sold out of his outfitting shop in Cuba. How the guayabera shirt got its name nonetheless as legend has it is a poor country woman merely added front pockets to her husband shirt so he could have his guavas with him at all times. Little did this humble woman know that her innovation would in due course become the most popular of Cuban shirts. The guayabera has now become trendy throughout the Americas, plus in Africa and Southeast Asia. The distinguishing features of a guayabera include the large pockets on the front (usually four in number, with one pair at the bottom and another pair at chest level) and the two sets of fine vertical pleats, referred to as “alforzas”, on the shirt’s front and back. In Cuba as well as many other Latin American countries, the guayabera is a traditional men’s garment often worn in formal situations. Appearing frequently in their native shirts are political leaders from these countries including Fidel Castro and Cesar Chavez. As a result, the shirt is sometimes connected to populist political leanings. Some American presidents - George H W Bush and Ronald Reagan included - have made a point of donning a guayabera when stopping by Miami’s Cuban community. Another well-known American enthusiast of the shirt was Ernest Hemingway. The United States first discovered the guayabera enter mainstream fashion in the seventies, after Ramon Puig, an exile from Cuba, introduced the shirt over to the mainland. For his contribution to men's fashion, Puig was given the nickname "The King of Guayabers" or for those fluent in Spanish "El Rey de las Guayaberas". He opened a store on Calle Ocho in Miami, right in the heart of the Cuban district. The Cuban shirts spread quickly through the city and way past. Guayaberas have become an emblem of solidarity among people of Hispanic origin in America. Yet its popularity is not restricted to any one ethnic culture. People around the world, especially in tropical locations, find in the guayabera a comfortable yet elegant garment that is ideal for an office setting or a semi-formal situation. Because of its extensive appeal, the shirt has acquired several alternative names. Referred to as a “Safari shirt” in Britain and several parts of Africa, and as a “bush jacket” in Jamaica. And let's not disregard that it was given the moniker "chacabana" by the people in the Dominican Republic.
