Boscombe Cliff Gardens

Just a short stroll from the beach and stretching 1½ miles into the town centre lie Bournemouth’s Grade-II listed Victorian gardens. The Lower Gardens are renowned for their floral bedding displays and are home to a number of attractions: the Art Exhibition at Pine Walk, an aviary, the Bandstand, an ornamental rockery and the Bournemouth Balloon. You’ll find food and drink kiosks here as well as crazy golf to keep the family entertained. The gardens host a variety of great festivals and events throughout the year. See pages 20 and 21 for a list of event highlights. The Central Gardens are home to tennis courts, a children’s playground and the start of the Tree Trail Walk. The Upper Gardens offer a more tranquil setting with nature trails and pretty red bridges dotted over the Bourne Stream.

Just a short stroll from the beach you can discover beautiful gardens such as Boscombe Chine and Boscombe Cliff Gardens in the east with their fantastic mix of colour, flowers, water, trees and wildlife and the beautiful Alum Chine Tropical Gardens created in the 1920s, can be found to the west. Heading towards Christchurch, visit picturesque Hengistbury Head - one of the most important Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in England boasting spectacular coastal views, a nature reserve and riverbank. Start your journey of discovery at the Visitor Centre where you can find out what’s on, as well as things to see and do during your visit. Explore this guide further to discover more parks, gardens and open spaces in the surrounding area. From ancient forests and tropical gardens, to local wildlife and open countryside, there’s ‘naturally’ something for everyone! 9

Pavilion Dance South West has inspiring dance shows, familyfriendly performances and a variety of classes from African dance and ballet to burlesque and parkour. Many of our local hotels also specialise in dance breaks throughout the year. Throughout the town centre, there are a myriad of cutting edge bars, cool clubs and live music venues to suit everyone. Walk in any direction from the iconic Bournemouth Pier to reach sublime spots for food and drink with a view.

The town also has a range of cinemas including a 6D cinema, casinos, bingo halls, and comedy nights. Of an evening, you don’t even need to leave your lodgings with fantastic entertainment on offer at many of Bournemouth’s selection of hotels. The town centre is easily walkable but there are plenty of taxis to get you where you’re going in the fastest possible time without you missing out on any of the fun! Beyond the town centre, spaces to socialise are popping up in the neighbouring coastal villages. Visit Westbourne for the hearty pubs and easy going eateries, or for an alternative night out, why not pop over to Boscombe and Southbourne to sample their characterful boho cafés, independent bars and music venues? Charminster offers more of an international flavour, with a veritable smorgasbord of colourful bars and restaurants. 11

Things to do - On Our Doorstep Eastleigh Lakeside Steam Railway Lakeside Country Park, Wide Lane, Eastleigh, Hampshire SO50 5PE 023 8061 2020 The Railway runs every weekend throughout the year and all school holidays from 10am - 4.30pm. The ride of 1 ¼ miles with a break at Monks Brook Halt for children’s play area and picnic tables. The fare is £2.50 for children, £3.50 for adults, children under two years of age travel free. Our tunnel has been extended to 355 feet (108 metres) and is now the longest Miniature Railway tunnel in Britain. Day out with Thomas is held three times a year. Check our website for full details. Santa Specials are the last two weekends before Christmas, you can book online for these events. Along with other special events the railway offers Footplate Experience, a one day course on how to prepare and drive a locomotive. The courses start at 9am and finishes at 4pm. The cost is £180.00 on a one to one basis, or bring a friend for £210.00 for two people. The price includes inviting your family and friends at 2.30pm to have a ride, with you driving. Free parking.
