We’re delighted to present Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival 2016

Cover Illustration by Drew Millward

Flick through this programme and you’ll find a generous offering of carefully selected performance and installation art, including many fantastic free events. From fiery seafront gatherings to projection-mapped trees, sonic orbs and metamorphosing horses, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival 2016 promises an abundance of inspiring experiences. For the Festival team, it is a genuine source of pride to play host to such a wide range of artists across Bournemouth’s most beautiful and iconic spaces. This brilliant collection of talent is supported by funding from Bournemouth Borough Council and Arts Council England. A huge thankyou to all our Festival partners and supporters who have helped deliver what promises to be a truly memorable week of activities for all ages. Venture into the gardens on opening Saturday and you’ll be greeted by something bizarre, beautiful or both. Synchronised swimmers, giant jellyfish and glittering mermaids climb out of the water onto dry land, an illuminated parade of torchlit-wanderers take over the streets at night and, as part of a hare-brained finale, a 90s-anthem brass band is set to perform surrounded by glittering balls of fire. The rest of the week promises even more – free acrobatic workshops, a nautical-themed kids rave, award-winning theatre shows and our closing spectacular from across the water is a stunning audio-visual dance of illuminated horses! Either you’ve stumbled into a Salvador Dali painting, or you’re at the latest Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival! We are really looking forward to welcoming you to a wonderful event. Best wishes, Amanda Barrie, Festival Director Funded by

A very warm welcome to the sixth Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival. THE FESTIVAL OPENING WEEKEND

Sea of Freaks Torchlit Procession by Walk the Plank Saturday 8th October 20:00 From The Triangle, BH2 5RY FREE

Sean Spencer

For the culmination of an action packed first day, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival presents an unforgettable experience for this year’s opening night kicking off with a fiery torchlit parade, consisting of around 120 torchbearing festival goers. Led by critically acclaimed 90s rave and New Orleans outfit Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, performers throwing sparks and flames up to five metres high in the air, this noisy procession presents a sight not to be missed. The procession will reach its finale at the Inferno, a stage-comefireball spectacular near the beachfront.

However, Arts by the Sea festival needs YOU to help us make this happen. If you’re over 18 and would like to become a torchbearer, we’d love to hear from you. To register please email  arts.bournemouth@bournemouth.gov.uk. Outdoor

The Waterfront, Pier Approach BH2 5AA FREE TICKETS

Mr Wilson’s form a traditional New Orleans Second Line – the noisy brass band bit of traditional Southern funerals. Mr Wilson’s expend their collective musical talent, paying homage to the diehard days of the Hacienda, ‘90s club culture and its greatest hero, Mr Anthony H. Wilson. As part of the Sea Of Freaks Torchlit Procession these revolutionary genre bashers opt for upbeat dance tracks over traditional slow hymns of mainstream funerals. Proudly stepping out in uniformed style, they channel the spirit of the 24 hour party people and get audiences dancing wherever they play. The vision is an anarchic extravaganza, bursting with colour and sound, rallying impromptu raves on street corners and rousing audiences young and old into a joyful frenzy. Music

Sunday 9th October 14:00 - 16:00

This award-winning performance will be a true highlight of this year’s Festival. The Urban Astronaut will be a unique take on the 2016 theme of Visions and Voyages, representing the ultimate and arguably final journey of human discovery into space. Yet this performance is multi-layered, pointing to the tension between technology and environment, progress and decay. Combining stunning design and a unique travelling flying machine with simple storytelling and a moving dance performance, Urban Astronaut searches for a solution to the environmental disaster that is very present in our near future. The answer is found in a simple encounter with a young girl. She provides the one thing the astronaut has lost... hope. Outdoor

A group of tactile sonic sculptures, visually at odds with their environment, have invaded Bournemouth’s Lower Gardens. Sounds emanate from inside large spherical forms and resonate upon their surface. The composition creates a mesmerising movement of sound bringing the otherworldly objects to life and encouraging audiences to roam from sphere to sphere. A soundscape that you can hear, feel and touch. Produced by Hogarth Productions. Cocommissioned by Hogarth Productions and Oxford Contemporary Music with funding from Arts Council England and Reading Borough Council.

Step onto a bridge in Central Gardens and be transported to a whole new world of light and sound. Travelling Light is a brand new outdoor sound and light installation from award winning Brighton based experimenters Ithaca, created especially for Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival 2016. As you journey across the illuminated bridge, guided by moving lights, the familiar sounds of the south coast are replaced by a soundtrack from another land, another time, another river. Step off the bridge and the lights fade, the sound of the music grows distant. You’ve crossed a river, and also the world.

Games with the Water Horse by Jon Adams

Games with the Water Horse is a heartfelt and sincere performance installation piece. At its heart, it is an exploration of consciousness, life story, art forms, and neuro-diverse thinking. Games with the Water Horse is a piece that performance artist Jon Adams has learnt as a memory journey. The piece involves Jon standing within a circle, reading 60 ‘minutes of an hour’ which are scattered once read. A two-part performance; the first half see’s Jon perform his readings and the second-half involves a ‘memory man’ Q&A with the audience. The piece was originally commissioned by ‘Workinprogress’ and premiered at Venice Biennale15 as part of Venice Agendas, and shown at Turner Contemporary Margate during their ‘Risk’ season. It was developed with support from New Theatre Royal’s Creative Lab.

With rave reviews from the Guardian, The Mirror, The Skinny and The Scotsman, NAUTILUS is a guaranteed, 75-minute tour-de-force of high-octane mime comedy. The risqué, uniquely eccentric and slightly mad show is the widely lauded follow-up to cult sell-out physical comedies KRAKEN and SQUIDBOY. However, it is NAUTILUS which is this ‘award-winning and internationally acclaimed idiot’ Trygve Wakenshaw’s most ambitious work to date. Described as everything from a ‘living cartoon’ (The Public Reviews) to the ‘physical comedy jackpot’ (The List), this playful show will—as The Scotsman put it—leave audiences ‘slack-jawed with admiration’. Clearly, there is broad consensus on the quality of Wakenshaw’s show, which is set to be a highlight at Bournemouth’s Arts by the Sea Festival. A true must see #bythesea16

CLOSING WEEKEND

The Ball by Wet Picnic Friday 14th October 20:00 The Waterfront, Pier Approach BH2 5AA FREE Do you like the sound of a completely immersive, decadent ballroom experience, right by the seafront in Bournemouth? The Ball is a large theatre production by the quirky assortment of characters at the critically acclaimed and reliably leftfield Wet Picnic. The Ball is set around a giant dance floor which transforms into a human chess board. Ideally situated at The Waterfront, Pier Approach, the audience will be placed around three sides of the performance space. At the head of the dance floor is a long table, where the family dine. YOU, the audience can choose to begin here or meet one of the performers who start in different parts of the town. Together you will prepare for the ball, and form part of a guests entourage, proceed to the space and present yourselves to the family. Expect moving chandeliers, eccentric choreography and joyfully disruptive performances that will draw you into a cinematic theatrical experience. To get involved go to artsbythesea.co.uk Commissioned by Bournemouth Arts by The Sea Festival and Stockton Appetite (Stoke). Outdoor Interactive

Tom Talks: Tomorrow’s Oceans Matter Saturday 15th October 14:00 - 17:00 Ocean Room, Pavilion Dance BH1 2BU FREE Tickets For booking information go to artsbythesea.co.uk Can art help turn the tide of our dependency on plastics? Can we do something useful, beautiful, striking, or powerful with the estimated 5.23 trillion pieces of plastic already floating and sinking their way around our ocean? Flotsam artist Joanna Atherton and photographer Lisa Woollett plus special guests explore the ocean as a resource and source of endless creative inspiration. Along the way, they discover the roles art and artists play in the fight to prevent more plastic waste ending up in the ocean, inspiring us all to look at the source of the problem and each make small changes for a big impact. Examples of striking, ocean-inspired work will be displayed, and the artists will be available to chat with event-goers during the interval. The Litter Free Coast and Sea Association and Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival join hands to produce a series of free talks. For booking information go to artsbythesea.co.uk Interactive

CLOSING WEEKEND

Compagnie des Quidams presents Fiers à Cheval Closing spectacular Saturday 15th October 19:30 The Waterfront, Pier Approach BH2 5AA FREE Tickets For booking information go to artsbythesea.co.uk Prepare to witness a passing dream. A procession of images which begins with strange characters, bizarrely dressed like science-fiction Venetians. In the space of thirty seconds the world changes into an atmosphere of dreamlike images and the characters transform into fantastic luminous horses. A strange little man lends himself to games, to jousting, and to the choreographies of this fantastic herd. An original musical creation

accompanies the show in the symphonic universe of legends. The images of the journey are changing, dynamic, poetical, in metamorphosis... No words but sounds; no barriers just musical atmospheres. Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival is delighted to be welcoming the internationally acclaimed Compagnie des Quidams, who will be performing in the area for the first time. Wander to the beachfront on closing night of The Festival and witness the marvel and magic that is their equestrian spectacular, Fiers à Cheval. Meeting ModernisM: 20th Century art in the russell-Cotes ColleCtion

29th October 2016 - 24th April 2017 Annie and Merton Russell-Cotes travelled the world throughout the 19th century, building up an eclectic collection of contemporary paintings. After their death, curators of the collection continued their vision, buying work by significant artists which dealt with similar themes but in a 20th century idiom.
