A warm welcome to our first trust-wide termly update, and first edition of Bourne360, in which we look back and celebrate some of the fantastic highlights, offering a glimpse into our diverse and vibrant educational community.

This term, each cluster of schools has embraced a unique theme, reflecting the distinct qualities of their communities.

In Woking, we explore 'The BET Guarantee,' emphasising our commitment to providing exceptional educational experiences. Our Chertsey & Addlestone schools celebrate 'Community’, highlighting the connections that make our schools special and the Richmond cluster focuses on 'Careers and Enrichment’, shaping our students' future paths.

In our final two clusters, Epsom sheds light on 'Mental Health and Wellbeing’, recognising its crucial role in our students' overall growth and lastly, in Hampshire, we engage in 'Reflections’, appreciating the journey and the lessons learned.

Please take a moment to immerse yourself in the stories, achievements, and aspirations featured in these pages and, as always, we truly appreciate your feedback.

TRUST NEWS

BET welcomes new schools to the Trust BET is thrilled to announce the expansion of its educational family, introducing Nonsuch Primary and Woodlands School as associate members, alongside the full membership of Philip Southcote School.

Nonsuch Primary School, a nurturing community school in Stoneleigh, Sutton, caters to children aged 3 to 11 years, placing a particular emphasis on cultivating essential skills for responsible citizenship.

Woodlands School, situated in Leatherhead, shines as a beacon of excellence in specialised education for students aged 2-19. Catering to diverse needs, the school has garnered a sterling reputation for its unwavering commitment to nurturing individual capabilities and aspirations.

Philip Southcote School, now a full member within BET's Chertsey and Addlestone cluster, excels in supporting students aged 11-19 with special educational needs across Surrey, with the school's impact extending through satellite centres in other BET schools.

These additions reinforce BET's dedication to providing outstanding

education and fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all learners across its network of schools.

Hopescourt School update

TRUST NEWS

On Tuesday 21st November, Surrey’s Planning and Regulatory Committee unanimously voted to approve the planning application for Hopescourt School.

With planning in place, works on the site are now due to commence early in the new year with practical completion scheduled for Spring 2025.

The new specialist free school in Walton on Thames will achieve 200 places for local autistic children (aged 4-19) by September 2029, providing more children with education that is best suited for their needs.

From September 2024, Hopescourt School will open on a temporary site and will provide an initial 77 places for secondary age students. For more information about Hopescourt please visit our website.

Ofsted news Congratulations to Pyrcroft Grange and Woodmansterne Primary School, who following their recent inspections retain their current respective grades of Outstanding and Good.

Environmental, social & governance: curriculum delivery

A Trust-wide research team has been tasked with reimagining curriculum delivery, specifically focusing on the recently introduced GCSE on Climate Change, aiming to integrate the latest insights into urgent environmental issues.

To achieve this, the team will adopt an innovative, cross-curricular approach to deliver the Climate Change curriculum; ensuring students gain a comprehensive understanding of climate-related issues by breaking down traditional subject boundaries.

Additionally, the team is committed to linking the curriculum with the green economy, providing students with practical insights aligned with sustainable industries. This emphasis extends to exploring potential career paths, preparing students for opportunities in the evolving landscape of sustainability; empowering the next generation with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly sustainable world. This pioneering approach positions BET as a leader in cultivating environmentally conscious and socially responsible global citizens.

BET Reads In the autumn of 2022, BET Reads was launched to develop a shared vision for reading across all schools.

Through this shared vision and a common approach, we aim to ensure there is no lottery in terms of exposure and quality of reading provision and, as a result, all BET students leave our schools as readers for life.

Our Hampshire schools reflect on the term...

HAMPSHIRE

As we bid farewell to another term it is heartening to reflect on the growth and success achieved by our young learners at Marnel and Everest.

Marnel Junior School: Cultivating enthusiasm The term at Marnel has been nothing short of extraordinary.

A heart-warming sight has been the proud display of student badges, a tangible representation of their commitment to excellent learning behaviours and a testament to the supportive environment provided by the school.

Reflecting on the astounding £6,000 raised for Kelly Simm, we are reminded of the positive change achievable when a community comes together. Thank you parents, for your unwavering support throughout the term, whether it be through attending events or actively participating in your child's learning at home.

To conclude the term on a high note, the children at Marnel descended on the Anvil Theatre for the Christmas pantomime. The joy on their faces marked a fitting end to a term brimming with achievements and excitement for future adventures in 2024 and beyond!

Everest Community Academy: Sustainability highlights This term, Everest embraced holistic wellbeing with a group of remarkable Year 10 students completing the mental health ambassador training with MHST. This transformative programme empowered them with the essential skills needed to support peers facing mental health challenges, and they now are primed to run sessions next term.

In sync with the school’s commitment to sustainability, the canteen replaced single-use cutlery and wrappers with reusable ‘green’ alternatives, and the sports hall now

boasts sustainable lighting, further reducing the school's carbon footprint.

The school is actively collaborating with the Grange for the 2024 festival, and a successful careers fair for years 9-11 showcased diverse career opportunities, whilst younger students simultaneously engaged a democratic voting process for key leadership positions.

A final special mention must also go to the school community for their day-to-day involvement in learning, spanning dance performances to cookery and woodwork.

Community spotlight: Work within our Chertsey & Addlestone schools

As the year draws to a close, our Chertsey and Addlestone schools reflect on the incredible sense of community that binds us together with our students, staff and families at the forefront of fostering connections, creating an environment where collaboration and compassion thrive.

Jubilee High School: Pioneering collaboration This term we proudly celebrate a milestone that speaks volumes about the strength of collaborative effort. Arthur, Ethan and Keira have become the first students from Bourne Education Trust schools to join St George's Sixth Form - an achievement that is both testament to their exceptional academic ability, and also years of relationship building and shared initiatives.

Projects like the reading partnership exemplify the power of such associations. Every Thursday, St George's Sixth Form visit Jubilee High to offer reading support to younger students. The exchange is a beautiful illustration of mutual benefit, with students from both schools gaining valuable experiences and deepening their engagement with the local community.

Sayes Court: Making a positive impact Meanwhile, at Sayes Court Primary School, their commitment to making a positive impact in the community is evident through the Money Management project. Students embarked on a journey to raise funds for charities, both national and local. Through creativity, determination and the support of families, the school raised funds for charities like Shooting Stars Children's Hospice, the Blue Cross and the Salvation Army, an organisation deeply rooted in the heart of the local community.

links between the school and the local community.

Collaborations with The Grange, a residential home for the elderly, and Chertsey Museum showcase the richness of experiences students are exposed to beyond the classroom. From sharing reading books with elderly residents to action-packed Viking Days, these initiatives teach children at Pyrcroft the importance of being active citizens.

Philip Southcote School: Student voice The spirit of collaboration and community extends to Philip Southcote School, where the School Council plays a pivotal role in ensuring the 'student voice' is heard and valued. Last year, they spearheaded the introduction of blazers to the school uniform, and this term their activities have included a visit to the Houses of Parliament to understand the democratic process more deeply.

Chertsey High School: The Student Action Team Chertsey High School has embraced a creative and community-focused term driven by the Student Action Team and their fantastic initiatives. From commemorating Black History Month to participating in Remembrance activities that honour the diverse experiences of those affected by war, the school community has shown dedication to inclusivity and understanding.

A special mention must also go to the CHSA (parent association at Chertsey), for their role in creating a sense of togetherness through the recent Winter Fair (which raised over £3000), joining local enterprise, craft, and festive cheer together, marking a wonderful close to the term.

Our Epsom schools focus on mental health & wellbeing

In a collective effort to champion mental health and wellbeing, our Epsom schools are implementing innovative initiatives to support students and staff alike. Read about some of their favourite highlights from this term...

Auriol Junior School: Nurturing wellbeing At Auriol Junior, they continue to prioritise wellbeing with a fully trained Senior Mental Health Lead and a dedicated Wellbeing Mentor.

Collaborating with the NHS Epsom Mental Health Support Team, the school ensures a strategic and supportive approach to mental health, also involving a team of student wellbeing leaders to actively shape the school's provision and the importance of mental wellbeing.

Epsom Primary: Positive Noticing Day and Fantastic Walking As part of their new relational approach to behaviour, Epsom Primary participated in Positive Noticing Day 2023, organised by ‘When the Adults Change’ author – Paul Dix. The school celebrated positivity and kindness through shared positive messages on post-it boards, alongside the school's Fantastic Walking initiative, a health check day and CPD for staff!

The Mead: Reception's mindful learning At The Mead, reception classes embraced mindfulness, focusing on their concentration skills and engaging the senses. Using a furry friend named Puppy, students mastered ‘good looking’ through silent exercises; fostering a mindful learning environment to enhance their emotional and cognitive development.

Epsom and Ewell High: Community wellbeing Epsom and Ewell recently donated over a tonne of food through the Good Company initiative, showcasing the power of teamwork.

CLUSTER

This achievement, driven by both staff and students, is part of the school's bi-monthly Community Fridays and sits alongside a wider research project to build meaningful connections and address broader community challenges.

Meadow Primary: Developing relational practice Meadow Primary has been prioritising relational practice to equip children with communication and positive decision-making skills. Also celebrating Positive Noticing Day 2023, the school joined over 600 schools worldwide in reinforcing positive behaviours through personalised praise labels, a culture of positivity and self-esteem building.

West Ewell Primary: Wellbeing Woofer - Audrey This term, West Ewell Primary introduced Audrey, the 'wellbeing woofer’, and her handler Rowan to enhance the mental health and wellbeing of students (and adults) in school. Audrey's presence was enthusiastically welcomed, offering companionship and comfort to individuals dealing with anxiety and other concerns. The school looks forward to the ongoing joy and positivity that Audrey will bring.

Woodmansterne Primary: Golden Rules Woodmansterne Primary has also embraced Paul Dix's approach, integrating ‘Golden Rules’ into their ethos. Participating in Positive Noticing Day, the school celebrated and publicly recognised positive behaviours. This initiative, implemented last year, has significantly bolstered self-esteem and confidence in students, positively influencing their behaviour for learning.

Together, schools within the Epsom Cluster are forging a path to achieve comprehensive wellbeing, recognising the importance of mental, emotional and physical health in education.

Our Richmond schools have been buzzing with activity this term, with a dedicated focus on enrichment and careers. Let's explore the exciting initiatives taking place in these schools...

The Matthew Arnold School: Enriching geography and celebrating sporting triumphs This term, Year 11 embarked on an enriching trip to Juniper Hall, closely studying the River Tillingborne to enhance their fieldwork experience, ultimately preparing them for success in their upcoming exams.

Amidst these academic endeavours, recent sporting triumphs have taken centre stage, particularly for the Year 7 and Year 9 boys, as well as the Year 10 girls' football teams, all of whom proudly secured the coveted title of borough champions. Heartfelt congratulations to everyone involved!

GASP Motor Project: Hampton High & Matthew Arnold Beyond the traditional curriculum, Hampton High (and The Matthew Arnold School) are actively fostering the career aspirations of their Year 9 students through the engaging GASP engineering motor mechanic course, providing valuable insights into vehicle mechanics.

Successful completion of the program not only equips students with practical skills but also earns them a prestigious AQA Unit Award qualification, marking a tangible accomplishment in their academic journey.

Archie R, a keen participant, enjoyed learning about various tools and vehicle parts, contributing to his aspiration to become a car mechanic.

GASP, recognised for its caring approach, delivers accredited courses via its mobile unit, reaching schools and youth organisations across Surrey.

CLUSTER Teddington School: TEDdington Talks Teddington School's commitment to preparing students for the future was evident through its Future Ready programme, featuring TEDdington Talks in collaboration with local businesses.

These talks, delivered by diverse speakers, offer insights into various careers, aiming to develop key employability skills and broaden students' perspectives.

This term's talks included Jackson Creegan, owner of Jackson FIT, John McCarthy, held hostage in Beirut for over 5 years, Ed Warner OBE, GB Wheelchair Rugby & Palace for Life Foundation, Sandra Cooper, and Helen Steers, Partner at Pantheon Ventures (UK) LLP. And in case you missed it - here are some highlight’s from the school’s captivating production of 1980s classic musical, Footloose!

Twickenham School: Beyond the classroom At Twickenham, their commitment to a holistic educational experience shines through the Master Learner Programme. This initiative provides students with real-life experiences in various industries, seamlessly integrating visits and workshops into the curriculum. Acting as a bridge to employment, the programme showcases the profound impact different professions have on the community.

The school's approach is evident in its partnerships with organisations like the Old Vic, Local Planning Council, Young Enterprise, and Intergenerational Music charities - exposing students to diverse possibilities, allowing exploration beyond the curriculum.

Let's delve into what each school has been doing under the umbrella of the BET Guarantee.

Brookwood Primary School: Empowering through music and chess At Brookwood Primary, the BET Guarantee has come alive with music lessons and sports clubs, encouraging physical and artistic development.

This term also witnessed the introduction of chess lessons, enriching students' numeracy and critical thinking skills; with festive preparations, including the EYFS/KS1 Christmas Production and the KS2 Carol Concert, showcasing the many diverse talents across the school.

Sythwood Primary School: Hands-on learning and athletic achievements This term Sythwood Primary hosted the Woking BET cluster football competition - fostering teamwork and sportsmanship across the cluster!

STUDENT SUCCESS

The Tim Spencer Award Congratulations to Mariam, Alan and Simran, the three deserving winners of the Tim Spencer Award at the Brooklands Innovation Academy. This prestigious recognition was presented by Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH).

Engaging students from Year 5 and above, the competition encouraged participants to share their insights through blog posts on the crucial topic, 'How can technology and Artificial Intelligence contribute to enhancing patient services in the NHS?' A big round of applause goes to Mariam, Simran and Alan for their outstanding contributions to this thought-provoking challenge.

Everest Community Academy exhibition Congratulations to the Year 10 students at Everest Community Academy, whose artistic prowess shines brightly in their stunning art display at Basingstoke Railway Station.

The students, inspired by the captivating works of artists Jamie Taylor and J Vincent Scarpace, masterfully blended these two distinct styles to create a display that not only pays homage to nature but also showcases their unique and remarkable artistic talents.
