RATIONALE Over this semester I plan to significantly increase my level of type & layout skills within editorial design, and create work based on this to send to studios of interest. I plan to resolve my hindered relationship with type & image as one, rather than seeing the two separately. I have to be able to confidently work with the two, as the discipline I am heading into requires me to have this skill. I plan to work much more intelligently with colour, as I know this is something I haven’t worked so well with in the past- I should feel confident about the application within my work. I will always write a plan for each day every evening, and re- revaluate in the morning. Alongside this I will write a plan on Sunday night that will be loosely followed given the daily list. I am going to better my communication skills by making sure as many briefs as possible are live and client led. This will test my communication (presentation & verbal), alongside my negotiation skills.

BRIEF 1

The Physics House Band Music Promotion and Art direction. An ideas led and client driven collaborative brief. I chose this brief because it gave me a chance to build my concept skills and work with real clients with a real deadline. There was also a lot of creative freedom within this brief that would create a solid part of the individuality of my portfolio. I wanted to Approximately five weeks were spent on this brief.

Elements: The Evolution of Hip–Hop Event promotion and Art direction. A research led, ideas driven collaborative brief. I chose this brief because of my personal interest in Hip –Hop and a chance to design for the cultural sector with a live brief. Creating something from nothing. Approximately seven weeks were spent working on this brief.

Spur: Creative’s of Leeds Publishing and Layout Client led, audience and content driven brief. The deliverable was to design and produce a significant publication on creatives within Leeds. I chose this brief because it was a perfect platform for me to be able to develop my much needed type and image skills. There was a quick deadline and the brief was live, so therefore, was closest to replicating a brief I would engage with professionally. Approximately four weeks were spent on this brief. ISTD: ‘Books still…?’, How we read Publishing and Layout A research led, ideas driven competition brief. I chose this brief because it gave me the opportunity to work purely with type and the idea behind the final outcome. I worked closely with grid systems and different forms of communication through type manipulation. Approximately two weeks were spent on this brief. ‘Jukebox’ HiFi, Leeds Event promotion and Branding A client led, audience driven brief. I chose this brief because it was live- a chance to get my work into the real world. The deliverables were to create an identity for the event, along with promotional collateral. It also gave me an insight into what working with clients outside of the creative circle would be like. Approximately one week was spent on this brief. ‘BBB’ The Wardrobe, Leeds Event promotion and Art direction A client driven brief with a focus on retaining existing identity. I chose this brief because there was such a short turnover for artwork, it was refreshing to work so quickly and decisively, along with working for a live client and deadline. One day was spent working on this brief.
