WINEMAKER STORY

CELEBRATION OF THE CENTURY The Continuum story begins in earnest with the first harvest of ‘C. Mondavi & Sons’ Zinfandel grapes in 1919. Cesare Mondavi, an innovator and immigrant, brought the family to America, to wine, and to the Napa Valley. Cesare even managed to keep the family in vines through prohibition by shipping grapes to those brave enough to test their own winemaking skills. His son, Robert Mondavi, was a visionary, possessed by a passion for excellence which transformed not only his family but the entire world of wine. In 1943, Robert Mondavi urged his father to purchase Charles Krug Winery, where the Mondavi brothers, Robert and Peter, could step into winemaking together. Each generation of Mondavi has left their mark on the wine world, always reaching for a higher, brighter star in what must be a hereditary drive for continued excellence. Continuum is built upon that dynamic family history of pioneers, each generation of Mondavis paving the way for the next. Robert’s son, Tim Mondavi came into the family business at a young age and proved himself a virtuoso, developing wines of world-class quality. In 2005, he and his sister Marcia Mondavi Borger, along with their adult children, founded Continuum, the natural next step and new home of Mondavi family winemaking.

2019 CONTINUUM

Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 99 | James Suckling The Mondavi family’s centennial harvest coincided with one of the finest growing seasons in Napa Valley. This careful blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot & 6% Merlot is a gorgeous expression of the site, with an elevated percentage of Cab Franc to capture the volcanic attributes. The nose is lively and expressive with red fruit and hibiscus notes. The entry is plush, revealing dark fruit woven with savory wild herbs and exotic spice on a bed of silken texture and velvet tannins. A special wine to celebrate a special anniversary – this is one to hang on to.

WINEMAKER STORY

THOMAS RIVERS BROWN THE ROAD TO WINEMAKING

Teach a man to fish, and he won’t go hungry, but teach a man to appreciate fine wine, and he might just grow up to be the next great winemaker. For some, wine is a birthright. The world is filled with winemakers who spent their childhood running through the vineyards of France or Italy or Napa Valley. For others, the path isn’t quite so straight or so well lit. Thomas Rivers Brown is a man you should know by name and reputation alone. He currently stands among California’s most accomplished and sought-after winemakers. With his pockets full of 100-point wines, he has the luxury to pick and choose his clients (and his vineyards). The list of wineries hoping to score his services isn’t getting any shorter. Obviously, that wasn’t always the case. Believe it or not, there was a point in Brown’s adult life when he hadn’t yet had a sip of wine. Brown was raised in South Carolina among folks who

generally frowned upon alcohol. His family had roots that ran centuries deep, but Brown had no plans to stick around. College offered the perfect escape, and he headed to the University of Virginia to study English Literature and Economics, an ideal double-major for anyone who has no idea what they want to do with their life. As luck would have it, his college sweetheart came from a family of serious wine collectors. They sparked his interest in the finer side of wine, and then kept the fire burning with access to their impressive cellar. As anyone who loves wine knows, it’s not an easy or an inexpensive passion to pursue. Fresh out of college and appropriately broke, he packed up his Honda and drove all the way to Napa Valley. For $50 a month in rent (plus utilities), Brown crashed in a friend’s closet in Oakland and started knocking on doors, working part-time gigs and hanging out at one of the Valley’s iconic wine shops.

As Brown sums it up, “Literally, the way to learn about wine is to taste everything that someone will put in front of you.” Starting with European wine, he jumped in with both feet and tried “anything and everything that someone would open.” Soon enough, he was working harvests and then assisting at Turley and then he lucked into some pretty big clients (*ahem* Schrader) willing to take a chance on a newcomer.

the decisions made in the vineyard to carry through to the bottle without a lot of meddling. It’s no accident that he only works with the very best vineyards. Brown’s advice, to any forward-thinking wine lover, is to share the good stuff. For many years, he depended on the kindness of others to loosen the corks on wines that were out of his reach. His philosophy is one of generosity: share great wine, share your knowledge, and keep the quality juice flowing for the future. Call it your civic duty as a drinker, or just good citizenship, but the world could use more Thomas Rivers Browns and we’re happy to provide liquid inspiration.

"...tasting often and tapping instincts that seem supernatural to outsiders..."

As a consultant winemaker, Brown is more hands on than many famous names in the business. He keeps his wines close, tasting often and tapping instincts that seem supernatural to outsiders. Ironically, it’s as much of what isn’t done as what is, that sets his wines apart. His style is naturalistic, “cautiously interventionist,” trusting

BUENA VISTA: A LEGEND REBORN

It’s easy to see why a vivacious icon such as Jean-Charles Boisset felt compelled to restore Buena Vista to its former glory. Anyone with an ounce of imagination (and JCB has pounds of it) would be inspired by the legend of the self-proclaimed “Count of Buena Vista,” Agoston Haraszthy. Agoston arrived in California via wagon train, surrounded by 49’ers struck by gold fever. He dreamed in a different color, and soon set his sights on Sonoma’s unique terroir. In 1857, he founded California’s first premium winery on a site called Buena Vista Ranch. Agoston was a driven pioneer and a larger-than-life personality, much like JCB. He is credited with the first gravity-flow winery in California, the first excavated wine caves, and the first to try Redwood trees for wine barrels. Today, JCB and Buena Vista are passionately committed to continuing the Count’s work. Since acquiring the historic estate, he’s invested heavily in restoring the grounds, including retrofitting the Champagne Cellars – a prescient move that likely saved the building from the 2014 South Napa Earthquake. “We are the shareholders of the Count’s vision,” says Boisset, embracing the ethos that “Our future is our past… our vivacious, colorful, and pioneering past!”

HEALDSBURG, CA

HEAD OVER

HEALDSBURG Healdsburg has long been a sleepy little country town just enough off the beaten path to make for a remarkably relaxing getaway. While Napa’s natural glamour dazzled out-of-towners, locals in the know would slip away for quiet weekends a little farther north. Today, Healdsburg still retains its small-town vibe and rustic charm, but the rest of the world is waking up to all it has to offer. That includes three-Michelin-starred dining plus enough shops, galleries and tasting rooms to keep you occupied for a longer stay. As to where to stay, we highly recommend the H2 HOTEL. As the undulating “green roof” suggests, this eco-chic hotel holds the gold standard in sustainability certifications, which should help you sleep even better at night! And you’re going to need your rest – Aside from miles of hiking trails (plus shopping and gallery hopping), some of our favorite wineries have tasting rooms right downtown. Start your day on the right foot with a saunter across the historic Healdsburg Plaza, established in the 1850’s by Harmon Heald himself. LIOCO sits at the southwest corner of this anchor point, on the opposite

side of Center Street. This modern tasting room is owned by husband and wife team Matt and Sara Licklider. For their own wines, they focus on Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Carignan from exceptional vineyards with older vines and heritage clones. If the sun is shining, grab a spot outside and ask for the 2020 LIOCO Chardonnay from Sonoma County. When you’re ready to move on, head north up Center Street, stopping to enjoy a little music in the plaza if you luck into a performance. You’ll soon stumble across BANSHEE WINES’ TASTING ROOM. Comfortably rustic with reclaimed wood and old leather, it’s a charmingly low-key spot to enjoy a flight of wines paired with a seasonal charcuterie board. Banshee’s Sonoma County Pinot Noir is an easy wine to keep on the menu at home because it always overdelivers. keep reading →

If fine wine and charcuterie feeds your soul, there’s another can’t miss spot right downtown. Don’t let the name fool you, JOURNEYMAN MEATS is more than just the best butcher counter in the county; it’s also a café, tasting room, and gourmet retailer, all under the direction of Pete Seghesio (previously of Seghesio Family Cellars). Pete learned the cured-meat ropes from Italian masters before reaching out to local farms and opening the doors on this unbeatable tasting experience. You’ll find serious salami and artisanal cheeses right alongside spectacular wines like Pete’s own 2019 San Lorenzo ‘Pearl', hailing from the steepest part of his San Lorenzo estate.

California, and then go pay our friends a visit at SMITH STORY WINE CELLARS. Eric Story and Ali Smith-Story are charming hosts and passionate advocates of wines with a sense of place. Their motto: Drink what you love, love what you drink. The Smith Story tasting room at Bacchus Landing is a 15-minute walk from the H2 Hotel and a stone’s throw from Dry Creek. There, you’ll find acres of picnic tables and bocce courts so you can spend time savoring their ‘Pickberry Vineyard’ Cabernet while you play.

"Drink what you love, love what you drink."

Next time you’re itching for a wine country getaway, with an emphasis on ‘getaway’, head into Healdsburg for a little R&R (Red wine & Romance).

SILVER OAK When a 2006 fire destroyed Silver Oak’s historic Oakville winery, they embraced the disaster as an opportunity to build something better. Ten years later, they had the world’s first LEED Platinum winery for existing buildings, operations and maintenance. Silver Oak’s new Alexander Valley winery set an even higher bar, with a goal of net-zero water and energy. That building became the world’s first winery to hit LEED Platinum status for building, design and construction. It’s a certified “Living Building,” creating a positive impact for the environment and community alike, and it’s the only manufacturing facility of any kind to EVER receive that recognition. Agriculture is on the front lines of climate change, dealing with the effects first hand. The remarkable steps Silver Oak has taken will serve as blueprints for the future of an industry we count on in more ways than one!

PRODUCER FEATURE

SPOTTSWOODE Founded by Mary Novak in 1982 and stewarded by second generation sisters, Beth Novak Milliken and Lindy Novak, Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery crafts wines that authentically capture a sense of time (vintage) and place (vineyard). In 1985, decades before most winegrowers were thinking about the health of our natural environment, Mary transitioned to organic farming with the encouragement of founding winemaker, Tony Soter. In 1992, Spottswoode became one of the first vineyards in Napa Valley to earn CCOF organic certification. More than just establishing Spottswoode as one of Napa Valley’s most environmentally conscious wineries, this and subsequent leadership in the environmental space has had an industrywide impact. Spottswoode’s wines are recognized as among the finest in the world and their commitment to organic and biodynamic farming, in addition to their B Corp certification, IWCA Gold Membership, solar arrays, and more, has helped to shape the thinking of generations of California vintners—proving that being green is entirely compatible with greatness.

Chuck Wagner’s leadership has broadened the scope of this icon well beyond the bounds of Napa Valley, but the seed of Caymus was planted long ago. THE SCOUTS

WAY MORE THAN CUSTOMER SERVICE

Our Scouts are here to take your pursuit of gastronomic pleasure to the next level. These specialized guides have put in their 10,000 hours as wine reps, bartenders, and sommeliers. They’ve managed restaurants, worked harvests, and traveled the world, all in the name of wine. If you’ve ever wondered about the kind of person who would devote their life to chasing down a perfect pairing... meet the Scouts.

ALAN LEWIS Born and raised deep in the heart of Texas, Alan Lewis chased his love of fine dining and great wine to the West Coast. He spent 6 years working in The Restaurant at Domaine Chandon, where he obsessed over matching food and wine to create fantastic culinary experiences. He also boasts a Sommelier’s Certificate from the Court of Master Sommeliers.

2020 MARTIN RAY

2017 K VINTNERS 'THE DEAL'

Really nice Napa Cabs under $50 are becoming scarce, but a good scoring Napa Cab under $30 is truly a rare find! We tasted this and it’s an easy recommendation.

Some of my favorite Syrah comes from Washington and K Vintners focuses primarily on Rhone varieties. They are doing an excellent job of making great wines that score well and stay at a reasonable price.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 92 | James Suckling

Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 96 | James Suckling

I’m not sure how Martin Ray manages to keep the price down but I recommend stocking up on this while you can!

“The Deal” Syrah is a good example and one I certainly recommend under $30.

ZAC MELENDREZ We imagine Zac’s shift from chasing a medical degree to joining the Court of Master Sommeliers probably ruffled a few feathers at home, but we’re happy to have him on board at Bounty Hunter. His passion for wine of every stripe makes him an ideal guide for anyone looking to explore the wider world of fine wines.

2021 FAR NIENTE

2019 LEVIATHAN

Chardonnay, Napa Valley

Red Blend, California 95 | James Suckling

Tell me you know good Chardonnay without telling me you know good Chardonnay… I see this bottle on your table and you’ve answered that question. Everything you could ask for from Chardonnay. It’s got some richness and cream and dare I say a hint of those buttery notes but this is, by no means, a butter bomb. Although full of powerful fruit, the wine maintains a freshness and lift that balances the richness.

Pound for pound one of the best red blends on the market and made by one of the best winemakers in the World – Andy Erickson. He spent time at Screaming Eagle, is now the head winemaker at Mayacamas, and has consulted for many top producers in Napa Valley and beyond. At this price, you can’t lose. Style is “New-World” exhibiting ripe fruit and round hips. Lovely, lovely wine. P.S. don’t be a purist! Chill it down and serve it cold.

MADELINE DAVIS Madeline was born with wine in her veins... and it was quite likely sparkling. She grew up in wine country, but it was the first glass of proper Champagne that sent her love of wine soaring. Culinary School further inspired a passion for the complete art of entertaining, where great food and wine shared with friends turns an evening into an event.

2021 SAINTSBURY 'SANGIACOMO VINEYARD' Chardonnay, Carneros

My all-time favorite Chard for the summertime! One of the happiest bottles to bring along for family picnics, summer barbecues, days spent on the lake or whatever else you got going on this summer. Enjoy the zesty, refreshing notes of lime, tangy citrus, kumquats, white peaches with balanced acidity. Best food pairings include cheddar cheese, grilled fish or braised chicken thighs with olives and Meyer lemons. Yum!

Everyone wants to know what you’ve brought. It certainly doesn’t hurt that this gem will pair along perfectly with all your favorite barbecue dishes, brisket, ribs, pulled pork, burgers, the juicier the better.

NAPA Our iconic Napa Valley location is a favorite lunch spot for locals and tourists alike. On any given day, you may even run into your Bounty Hunter Wine Scout sitting at one of the tables outside, watching kayakers navigate the Napa Creek. Located at First and Main and housed in an 1880’s brick building that practically breathes history, it has the casual feel of an oldwest provisioner and a wine list so incredible we’ve been voted “Best Wine Bar in Napa Valley” five years in a row. Napa Valley is the essence of upscale rustic, where millionaires kick dirt next to farmers. Yeah, you might run into one of the Valley’s rockstar winemakers at our spot, but we want to make it clear that you don’t need to put on airs to pour ‘The Pact’ and nobody judges if you prefer high-value to crazy rare. If a wine tasting trip to the valley is in your future, be sure to add us in to your itinerary. After all, tasting on an empty stomach can be downright dangerous! 46

UNTER RESTAURANT ULINARY EXPERIENCE

WALNUT CREEK The three pillars of a life well led are fine wine, great food, and close friends. It’s our great joy to supply the first two, to be shared with the last! That’s why we decided to open a second restaurant and wine bar in downtown Walnut Creek, about an hour’s drive south of Napa. There, you’ll find a larger space with a larger kitchen, which really allows our chefs to spread their wings (and ribs and beer-can chickens). The patio is a verdant haven on a warm evening, where you can enjoy a cocktail under the stars or a wine tasting for the books. Just remember, please don’t share your Merlot with the Koi fish - they go absolutely sideways if you offer them anything other than Pinot Noir. The next time you’re in town for business and you don’t have time for the trek to wine country, you can always find the bottles you love waiting in Walnut Creek. You might even find a famous winemaker bellied up to the bar after a long day’s work, tasting the competition.

SUPERCULTS

SUPERCULTS Membership is exclusive in the realm of the so-called “Supercults” of fine wine. For the most famous labels, the lines trail around the block and the bouncer is not to be trifled with. Fortunately, Bounty Hunter has a VIP, all-access pass. Or a key to the back door. Or a lockpick and a lookout. The point is, never assume that the bottle of your dreams is unobtainable. Our Wine Scouts have some surprising connections in and around the wine world; they’ll be the first to tell you that that most fun aspect of their job is the “impossible hunt” for a special bottle. One such Scout, Madeline Davis, was recently tasked with finding an anniversary vintage of something exceptional for a couple celebrating their 30th. The client was the only one surprised by her ability to deliver such a specific, three-decade old bottle. Bounty Hunter isn’t just a cute name. Finding the unfindable is what we do. We maintain close relationships with wineries, traders and even individual collectors so that we can rise to the occasion when you’re ready to test our skills. Just be warned, there’s nothing more addictive than getting exactly what you want.

WINES OF THE WORLD

TOUR DE FRANCE Raise a glass to those enterprising French monks who went from drinking wine to studying it. They were the first to notice that soils, elevations, and climates could change the entire expression of a grape. They were champions of classifications and appellations, and they still produce wines that set the bar for both otherworldly perfection, and pure drinkability. Climate change is casting a long shadow on the future of French wine, so we recommend basking in the light of France's best today.

WINES OF THE WORLD

THE BEAUTY OF BURGUNDY Burgundy set the bar for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay around the world but, despite its big reputation, this small region produces only about 3% of France’s wine. There’s simply not enough of that magical terroir to go around, which drives up the price of land, grapes and, finally, the wines themselves. Don’t even get us started on the coveted Grand Cru vineyards – they only make up 2% of the region, just a sliver of that delicious pie. No wonder these mouthwatering bottles are in such high demand.

WINES OF THE WORLD

CHAMPAGNE

CHAMPION REGION IN FRANCE Before the dawn of the 18th century, the legendary father of modern Champagne, Dom Perignon, was likely tearing his hair out (and creating a monk fashion) trying to rid his wines of bubbles. He wasn’t alone; winemakers in Northern France were desperate to compete with Burgundy but the colder climate was proving disastrous. First, it kept grapes from fully ripening on the vine, then it caused a premature halt to fermentation over winter. When the natural process sparked back to life in Spring, the result was explosive. Literally. Cellars full of exploding bottles and lost revenue. We don’t cry over spilled milk but you can bet many tears have been shed over spilled wine. Dom Perignon eventually mastered the first truly still red wine (the holy grail of the time), but he also perfected a reliably clear, sparkling white wine made from black grapes. The particularities of the terroir in the Champagne region of northeast France – those same details that made it indisputably “not Burgundy” – proved ideal for growing the black grapes Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir, along with the white Chardonnay. Vine-friendly hills with chalky, well-draining soils, steady rainfall, and the cool climate once cursed by winemakers were made for sparkling wine.

THE ITALIAN JOB There’s a lot more Italy than can be contained beneath that famous Tuscan sun. From misty, rolling hills to rugged coastlines, Italian vineyards play home to more than 2,000 grape varieties. Some are indigenous, but many travelled via ancient, trans-Adriatic connections to find new homes on Italy’s welcoming soil. There’s a whole delicious world to explore up and down the length of the boot, plus a growing appreciation for the island offerings from Sicily and Sardinia. This is the first stop for any devoted wine aficionado, where you’ll find pizza night Chianti Classico and feast-worthy Brunello. PRODUCER FEATURE

BODEGA CATENA ZAPATA Dr. Laura Catena doesn’t sleep. When would she have time? “The face of Argentine wine” manages more than one winery, is a mother of three, an author, and a practicing part-time physician of Emergency Medicine in San Francisco. She likens winemaking to medicine in that “Doctors put data together with limited information. It’s the same thing in the vineyards. You’ve got the weather; you’re tasting grapes; when should you harvest?” Laura’s traditional education is impressive, but much of her gift was a natural inheritance from her family line. Her father, Dr. Nicolas Catena Zapata, was an economist and guest professor at UC Berkeley when he became so impressed by Napa Valley’s renaissance that he was inspired to champion the same path for his homeland. His family had owned a winery in Argentina since 1902, but Argentine wine wasn’t even on the radar for

the rest of the world. He saw that improved viticulture emphasizing quality and growing at high-altitude had the potential to change everything. It was a gamble, and an expensive one, but it paid off. Argentina is now the 5th largest wine producer in the world and Nicolas was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 from Wine Enthusiast. Today, his daughter Laura carries the torch for the family legacy. She is currently managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata, working closely with Winemaking Director Alejandro Vigil and Vinyard Manager Luis Reginato to make the vineyard selections and blends. Her obsession with soil microbiomes, high-altitude viticulture, and age-worthiness have helped Bodega Catena Zapata become an icon of Argentine wines and a leader on the world stage.
