THE LEGENDS OF THE SPRING

THE LEGENDS

OF THE SPRING For 25 years now, you’ve asked us for the very best food, wine, spirits, and travel experiences in Napa Valley and beyond. We listened, and this Spring we’re celebrating with a special commemorative case of some of your all-time favorite Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. It’s the very best mix of iconic wines and emerging cults that we can put into a handsome branded wooden case, including delivery, for $2,499.

’14 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley

Only one wine has been named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year twice. That wine is Special Selection. The 2015 delivers the goods, and then some. If you crave unbridled horsepower and extract in your Cabernet Sauvignon, hop on this chopper!

Garnet in the glass with the stuffing to match, this classic Napa Valley Cabernet plays its hand like the champion it is. Soft, gulpable, open for business right now, it’s no mystery why Silver Oak remains an American standard!

’15 Poetic Justice “Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard ” Red Wine • Oakville

’16 Diamond Creek “Volcanic Hill” Cabernet Sauvignon • Diamond Mtn

Roughly equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is balanced and fine, with a fascinating interplay between red and black fruit—with a totally ravishing, savory, come-hither aroma! Whoa! JS 93

For its sheer power and structure, this wine should require a permit. You’ll want to drink this one last. Look for impeccable freshness, with notes of boysenberry syrup and crème de cassis, dark chocolate, and sweet, nicely integrated tannins.

’15 Arietta Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville, Napa Valley This Cabernet, hewn from the Meteor Vineyard, deserves your special attention. Galloni agreed, calling it “outrageously beautiful. Exotic and beguiling, the 2015 is a wine of total seduction. Silky tannins add to the wine’s sumptuous, racy feel. What a gorgeous wine this is.” VN 96

WINE

’15 Caymus “Special Selection” Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley

’15 Robert Mondavi “To Kalon Vineyard” Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon • Oakville To Kalon is a titan of Oakville. Galloni flipped for this ravisher, calling it “Rich, powerful and voluptuous, the 2015 oozes with class from the very first taste… one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Robert Mondavi Winery.” WA 96+

’15 Joseph Phelps “Insignia” Estate Grown Red Wine • Napa Valley

’15 Merryvale “Profile” Proprietary Red • Napa Valley

A skyscraper, plain and simple. “Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers a knock-out core of intense, energetic fruit with chewy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing with epic length and freshness.” – The Wine Advocate WA 98

Merryvale is an unsung superhero of Napa Valley, quietly making absolutely pristine, ageworthy Cabernet. This is their pinnacle expression, blooming from the glass with regal notes of blackcurrant fruit, poached cherries, and chocolate. A dreamlike Cabernet! WA 93

’14 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley With Alejandro Bulgheroni’s “Dream Team” behind the wheel, how could this wine be anything but extraordinary? This is a beauty, blooming from the glass with fresh and dried blackcurrants, mocha, and poached black cherries.

’15 Opus One Red Wine • Napa Valley In 2015, America’s “First Growth” delivered a “sexy, beautiful spice-bomb, with tons of cinnamon stick, cloves, fenugreek and pepper notes springing forth over a core of mulberries, plum preserves, blackberry pie and fragrant earth plus a waft of lavender.” – The Wine Advocate JS 98 WA 97+

’16 Eisele Vineyard “Altagracia” Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley NEW! Altagracia has officially moved beyond “second wine” status, scoring a 95 in The Wine Advocate and bottled almost entirely from Estate fruit. This is a fabulous way to enjoy that legendary Eisele Vineyard fruit in an earlier-drinking format! WA 95

’15 Raymond Vineyards “Generations” Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley Parker plum lost his cool for this upvalley standard, loving its “intense blueberry and blackberry fruit, hints of white flowers intermixed with unsmoked cigar tobacco,” “great intensity,” and “stunning plumpness.” Epic! WA 98

JUSTICE

N E W H E I G H T S O F AC C L A I M ! 98+, 97, 96 ! “2016 is an incredibly beautiful, classic year for Napa Valley, which produced an enormous amount of high-quality wines. The best 2016s shine for their purity of fruit, ripe, polished tannins, and impeccable balance.” – Jeb Dunnuck

WINE

With 11 vintages of highly-acclaimed, customer-favorite editions of the Justice wines already in your cellars and gracing your tables, we couldn’t be more thrilled to receive a resounding endorsement for the efforts of 100-Point Winemaker Tim Milos in 2016. His skill in the cellar and the perfectionist farming of Andy Beckstoffer resulted in our highest-scoring Justice trio of all time!

’16 Blind Justice “Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon • Oakville Dunnuck said this year’s wine “boasts a decadent bouquet of black fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and gravelly minerality. It’s powerful, concentrated, and locked and loaded on the palate, and it’s one of the more structured, tannic wines in the lineup from the Bounty Hunter team. Nevertheless, it’s almost off the charts with its potential. I followed this bottle for multiple days and it only impressed more and more with air.” JD

98+

’16 Frontier Justice “Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard” Red Wine • Napa Valley Frontier Justice is so full of fruit this year, and Dunnuck noticed: “This deeply colored effort gives up voluptuous amounts of ripe cherry and currant fruits, ample spice, cedar, and incense nuances, a fleshy, full-bodied, sexy texture, and a great finish. A wine that packs some serious depth of fruit and intensity into a beautifully balanced, weightless package, this sensational juice can be drunk any time over the coming 2-3 decades.” JD

97

’16 Poetic Justice “Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard” Red Wine • Napa Valley Dunnuck calls this wine “another superstar wine from this team and boasts a saturated purple/ruby color, awesome notes of black raspberries, crème de cassis, vanilla, incense, and flowers, full body, and loads of sweet tannins. It’s hedonistic, deep, rich, and powerful, and just glides across the palate. It too will keep for 2+ decades.” JD

WINE

In a landmark vintage like 2016—on par with 2013 and any Napa Valley harvest you can name—your expectations are probably very high for Joseph Phelps’ prestige cuvée, Insignia. With a 40+ year track record and access to some of the greatest fruit sources all over the valley, we’re happy to say the 2016 Insignia is a certified KNOCKOUT. With all the freshness and ripeness of the grand 2016 vintage, this is a velvety, black-fruity, chocolaty wonder. Jeb Dunnuck says the wine “shows a slightly more vibrant, cooler, more classic character [than 2015]. Vibrant notes of crème de cassis, violets, crushed rocks, and lead pencil all give way to a full-bodied 2016 that has silky tannins, no hard edges, and thrilling purity of fruit,” while The Wine Advocate loved its “chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and black raspberries with touches of underbrush, cedar chest and bouquet garni plus a hint of grilled meat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate springs forth with exciting energy, offering loads of red and black fruit layers.” Phelps Insignia is the most indispensable, essential wine for the serious Cabernet collector’s cellar, year in and year out. Is a perfect 100 rating in the cards for this wine? If it were up to us, yes! Reach out to your scout today to reserve your 6-packs of this epic expression of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

WINE

Continuum’s Sage Mountain Vineyard on Pritchard Hill, high in the Vaca Range above Oakville, represents something very special in the Napa Valley. It’s a triple-threat: A magic, high-altitude terroir, studded with giant andesite boulders. Almost 100 years of familial grape growing and winemaking knowledge. And finally, an unwavering commitment to excellence, without compromise. When nature provides a pitch perfect vintage, the results are almost predictable. Under the careful guidance of Tim Mondavi (son of Robert Mondavi and wine veteran who honed his craft over several decades in the vineyards and cellars of Opus One, Ornellaia, Luce and Sena in Chile), they delivered an absolutely stunning wine. Depth, richness and tightly engrained minerality come from rocky soils that yielded less than 3,000 cases for the world and we are privileged to offer a small allocation to share with you. Antonio Galloni called it “a wine of considerable aromatic intensity and power,” and James Suckling loved its “fantastic focus and beauty with blackberries, mineral, lead pencil, graphite and stones. Full body, juicy fruit and silky tannins.” This wine makes a solid case for Continuum to be considered one of the great estates of the Napa Valley. Limited Availability.

ALEJANDRO BULGHERONI ESTATE

F E AT U R E D P R O D U C E R S

NO COMPROMISES

When international wine entrepreneur, Alejandro Bulgheroni, chose to establish his eponymous family domaine in the Napa Valley, the mandate was clear: spare no expense, make no compromises.

WINE

Immediately, the decision was made to hire superstar winemaker Philippe Melka [Dominus, Pétrus] and his onetime mentor Michel Rolland to oversee oenology with support from assistant winemaker Matt Sands, an alum of harvests at Screaming Eagle and Bryant Family. The Estate itself, a beautiful stone building just south of Meadowood Resort in St. Helena, was the original founder’s room of the prestigious Napa Valley Reserve. Understandably, Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate has become feverishly sought after. The portfolio includes their “Lithology” series which is a collection of single vineyard and AVA-designated wines, as well as their flagship Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a selection of their finest barrels. The wines are available exclusively via a long waiting list at the winery as well as fine restaurants such as The French Laundry. However, we have been granted a small allotment of their 2015 Lithology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine specifically created to reflect Napa’s extensive soil diversity, unique microclimates and terroir.

’15 Lithology Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley With Bulgheroni’s Dream Team behind the wheel, how could this wine be anything but extraordinary? This is a beauty, blooming from the glass with fresh and dried blackcurrants, mocha, and poached black cherries. We have a scant allocation to share with you from this thoroughly exciting, young cult!

SILVER OAK

BETTER THAN EVER, BY DESIGN

WINE

You might think that a winery with Silver Oak’s track record and feverish demand would be content to rest on their laurels and coast, however this Oakville institution has invested millions in making their flagship Napa wine better than ever—and it shows in their 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet. We were amazed at how open and approachable the wine shows upon release, thanks to a heavy handed splash of Cabernet Franc to “juice up” the blend. Waves of coconut, candied huckleberry, lush black cherry, mocha, and a long spicy finish. It’s everything you’ve come to expect from this juggernaut…and so much more! This is the vintage to stock up on.

Incredibly intense aromas and flavors of plum and blackberry, dark chocolate and lavish mocha layers float seamlessly together in the glass and remind anyone enjoying it that legacies of quality aren’t built without an impeccable track record. CHAPPELLET

THE TOP OF THE HILL, SINCE 1967 “This range of new releases from Chappellet shows off the 2016 vintage to great effect. The wines are nuanced, open-knit and spectacularly delicious.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

WINE

For their track record, intrinsic quality, taste of the soil, quality-price rapport, freshness, and visceral excitement, we believe Chappellet Vineyards is one of the finest wineries, top-to-bottom, in the entire Napa Valley. The Chappellet Family and Philip Corallo-Titus somehow managed to outdo themselves in 2016 and 2017—these wines are so snappy and succulent, you’ll have a hard time keeping your hands off them!

’16 Chappellet “Signature Collection” Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley

’17 Chappellet “Mountain Cuvée” Proprietary Red • Napa Valley Year in and year out, Mountain Cuvée is eminently drinkable, packed with black fruit flavors, and oozing sex appeal in a way that other $30 reds in these parts don’t. Look for a generous helping of super-sweet chocolaty fruit, black cherry liqueur and spicy fig jam. This is the kind of wine that restaurants love to pour by-the-glass, because they know precisely what will happen!

$34.95 btl.

A cuvée bearing Donn Chappellet’s signature,in a sense this is their flagship wine. Folks, this wine is a GIVEAWAY, underpriced by about 50% compared to its peers. Galloni agreed, calling this “powerful, dense and super-expressive. Mocha, bittersweet chocolate, spice, new leather and menthol wrap around a core of beautifully layered, dark-fleshed fruit. Ample, creamy and resonant on the palate…Best of all, the Signature remains one of the very finest values readers will find in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.” Great Napa cab doesn’t have to cost $100…You just have to know where to look. It is simply otherworldly—Galloni agreed entirely: “Floral aromatics, bright, red-toned fruit and silky tannins elevate the Melanson into the realm of the truly sublime.” Pour this next at your next dinner party and watch the eyebrows soar!

’15 Dana Estate “Onda” Cabernet Sauvignon • Napa Valley Precision is the M.O. of this Philippe Melka project. Galloni lost his cool, calling it “gorgeous. Ripe, sumptuous and silky on the palate, with terrific freshness and no excess weight, the Onda is absolutely beautiful in 2015. Sweet red and purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and mint all give the wine freshness. This is a gorgeous, utterly irresistible wine from Dana Estates.” A delicious cabernet thrill ride that is well worth the price of admission. JS

2016 BORDEAUX “ S T U N N I N G LY B E A U T I F U L ”

WINE

BORDEAUX

From the words of acclaimed wine critic Antonio Galloni, “I found many 2016s to be even better from bottle than they were during the spring futures campaign. The best 2016s are powerful, richly layered, vibrant and stunningly beautiful, not to mention incredibly delicious and alluring. For so many wines and estates, 2016 is an epic vintage.” With many wines already on their way from France, this is your last chance to secure your allocation before the prices soar.

’16 Château Valandraud Saint-Émilion Grand Cru What began as Jean-Luc Thunevin’s little garage operation with his wife Murielle Andraud is now known as one of the most hedonistic wines in all of St. Émilion. Galloni called it “exceptionally beautiful. Powerful and explosive in the glass, the 2016 is superb today. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, espresso, leather and smoke add layers of nuance. One of the things I like most about Valandraud in 2016 is the combination of fruit richness and vibrancy. Those elements make for a stunning, punchy Saint-Émilion that hits all the right notes.”

’16 Château d’Yquem Sauternes • 375ml It’s hard to taste a sip of Château d’Yquem Sauternes and not be transported. It’s one of the most ethereal, sublime sweet wines you can put in your mouth. From Jefferson and Washington to the Tsars of Russia, d’Yquem’s list of fans is centuries old and many thousands of names long. Its perfumes of honey, crème brulée, pineapple, apricot, and exotic spices are simply intoxicating. Lay down a case of this and you’ll be rewarded for decades to come.

’16 Château Leoville Las-Cases Saint Julien Leoville-Las-Cases is typically the most backwards, long-lived of the Saint Juliens, but Galloni disagreed, saying “a majestic, seamless, opulent wine. Yes, I am talking about Las Cases, traditionally one of the Left Bank’s most austere, forbiddingly tannic wines. Sumptuous and full-bodied, the 2016 takes over all the senses, with seemingly endless layers of inky, purplish fruit. Mint, lavender and white flowers are some of the many notes that emerge from the exotic, arrestingly beautiful bouquet as the 2016 makes its case for consideration as one of the wines of the vintage…Put simply, the 2016 Las Cases is a total stunner!” A MUST-HAVE in 2016!

’16 Château Haut Brion Pessac-Léognan The Triple Crown! When not just one, or two, but three top critics give perfect scores, you know what’s in the bottle is destined to be the stuff of legend. Galloni says it is “quite possibly even more magnificent from bottle than it was from barrel. Powerful and rich, yet not at all heavy, the 2016 is a wine of nearly indescribable beauty. Haut-Brion is often a thrilling wine, but it is rarely this finessed in its youth. Gravel, cured meat, tobacco and cedar are some of the many nuances that develop with air, but it is an extraordinary sense of harmony that really stands out. Whether you are a connoisseur, collector or investor, this is the sure thing you’ve been searching for.

MONTROSE

SELECTIVITY & CONSISTENCY In the 18th and 19th century, sailors on Bordeaux’s Gironde estuary always noticed that one hill in Saint-Estèphe was always lit up in the sun with bright pink flowers. We now know that gravelly hill as Château Montrose. Cos d’Estournel’s only competition among super-seconds in St. Estèphe, Montrose is a huge, hillside property that owes its greatness to draconian selectivity.

GREAT CALIFORNIA REDS

CALIFORNIA REDS

SUN-KISSED & SUCCULENT

’16 Andrew Murray “Watch Hill” Syrah Santa Barbara County

’16 Smith Devereux “Ibex” Proprietary Red Napa Valley

Listed at #16 out of Jeb Dunnuck’s 50 top red wines of 2018, Andrew Murray’s “Watch Hill” Syrah is getting some well-deserved acclaim for a good reason. Jeb called it “a dense, rich Syrah that has classic notes of blackberries, smoked earth, pepper, and roasted herbs… awesome purity of fruit, a smoky, meaty personality, full body, and a great finish.” Fans of Sine Qua Non take note, this one’s got all the same pizazz, at a fraction of the price.

WINE

Crafted by Ian Devereux and Steve Smith, “Ibex” is a classic Napa Valley red blend built for pleasure. A sensationally plush, exotic mouthful of blackberry and rhubarb fruits, chocolate covered espresso beans and a juicy, spice-laden finish that is an absolute giveaway at this price! You just don’t see wines of this caliber from Napa for under $50 anymore. It’s good to have friends on the inside track.

The latest Cabernet blend from showman, provocateur, and hopeless wine-lover Jean-Charles Boisset, is as extravagant as its proprietor. As The Wine Advocate proclaimed, this bursts from the glass with notes of “crème de cassis, char-grilled meat, garrigue and a sautéed herbs-scented nose with notions of Indian spices, pepper and potpourri…elegant, fresh, floral and finely textured.” A seductive sipper that’s sure to get your heart pumping. Looking for a Chardonnay with enough finesse that won’t overwhelm your meal, but rich enough to enjoy on its own? Look no further. MV Jean-Charles Boisset Brut Rosé “Crémant de Bourgogne” The cool air is settling in over the backyard. The sun is going down, the oysters are shucked, and dear friends are coming over. A glistening glass of Boisset Brut Rosé is the perfect way to greet your guests with grace and style. Made just like Champagne, but from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Burgundy, this has a nice fine bead and notes of crushed strawberries, brioche, and violets. It’s always good to have a few bottles of bubbles in the fridge…just in case.

WINE

The quality-price-ratio on this wine is, in a word, flabbergasting. High-altitude mountain hillside vines planted in the early 80s—plus a long cool growing season—give this a satisfying weight in the mouth, and a dazzling beam of acidity to keep everything fresh. Mandarin orange blossoms, granny smith apples, and Puligny-like herbs complete the picture. This Chardonnay can hang with the very best in California!

$29.95 btl. ’17 Vöcal Vineyards “Alfaro Vineyard” Grüner Veltliner Santa Cruz Mountains The famed varietal of Austria is turning heads in the US from plantings in the Santa Cruz Mountains made by Ian Brand, The San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year in 2018, & Sommelier Ted Glennon. Brilliantly expressive and aromatic, this boasts notes of classic fruit cup, pineapple, super-ripe, drippy melons, with a little peppery kick to remind you of the grape you’re tangling with. This is a springtime slurper, that’s sure to please!

’17 Shafer “Red Shoulder Ranch” Chardonnay • Carneros From Shafer’s gold standard site in Carneros, this wine is generously oaked (75% new French oak) but does not undergo malolactic fermentation, so it always has crisp acidity to go with its full body and tropical fruit. So succulent, dripping with fresh comice pear fruit, this cries out for a pairing like a Dungeness crab, fennel, and citrus salad! JD

GREAT CABERNET SAUVIGNON

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

G R A C E , C O M P L E X I T Y, & P O W E R

“2016 is an incredibly beautiful, classic year for Napa Valley, which produced an enormous amount of high-quality wines. The best 2016s shine for their purity of fruit, ripe, polished tannins, and impeccable balance.” – Jeb Dunnuck

WINE

’16 Shafer “One Point Five” Cabernet Sauvignon Stags’ Leap District Shafer’s “One Point Five” is 100% from Stags Leap Cabernet from their estate and honors the combined one and a half lifetimes of experience of father John Shafer and son Doug Shafer. The wine is another huge success in 2016, and as The Wine Advocate proclaimed, it “gives up intense Black Forest cake, blackberry pie and blackcurrant cordial scents with hints of licorice, eucalyptus, espresso, tar and chargrilled beef.” Consistently one of the finest cabernets from Stag’s Leap each year. ’16 Edge Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley According to Wine Critic, Antonio Galloni, “This is one of the very best values readers will find in California Cabernet Sauvignon.” Well, you’re not going to get any arguments here. Textbook Alexander Valley plush, red berry fruits unfurl on the palate to reveal layers of mocha and spice with mouth-coating scrumptious texture. Your weeknight bacon cheeseburger never had a better partner! VALUE

$24.95 btl.

’16 Vöcal Vineyards “Bates Ranch” Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mtns This supple Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the original hillside plantings of Bates Ranch from 1969. We fell in love this wine after only a few swirls. Graceful elegance, fresh red cherries, puffs of cocoa, and red roses abound…Old-school Mountain Cabernet in every way! Grab a case of this and you’ll be singing our praise every time you pop a cork. SCOUT FAVORITE

’16 Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Made by Ray Signorello, Fuse showcases the 2016 vintage effortlessly, boasting aromas of spicy cappuccino with a touch of brown sugar, black cherries, in a soft and totally slurp-ready format. Antonio Galloni called it “a terrific value in Napa Valley Cabernet. Soft contours and silky tannins let the dark red stone fruit, leather, smoke and savory herb notes come through nicely.” Serious value for the money… you cannot go wrong here.

’14 Anthem “Beckstoffer Las Piedras” Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

Signorello’s flagship bottling, Padrone, is produced in honor of patriarch Ray Signorello Sr and is only made in exceptional vintages like 2016. The Wine Advocate loved its “youthful, very primary notes of red and black currants, crushed plums and black raspberries with touches of cinnamon stick, Marmite toast, pencil shavings, lavender and black soil.” This one stands shoulder to shoulder amongst the best in Napa. We recommend buying a case…some to drink now and the rest enjoy for the next two decades. WA

Between the winemaking Acumen of Jeff Ames (TOR, Rudius) and this prime, gravelly stallion in the Beckstoffer stable, this is a wonder. Wine Spectator said it “Offers wonderful richness and focused on juicy, structured blackberry, cedar, anise, and light loamy earth flavors. A very complete and compelling display of power and finesse, showing deft balance. Ends with a long, persistent finish.” A Cabernet that is going to rock you for 15 years or more!

’15 Notre Vue “Vineyard Blocks 37, 35A, 7G, 35E, 34” Proprietary Red • Chalk Hill Located just over the hill from Knights Valley, Chalk Hill is what we like to think of as a “Mini Napa.” Veteran winemaker Michael Westrick is steering the ship here and in 2015 he produced a massive, beautifully cassis-perfumed Cabernet blend we just had to have. Mocha, blackberry, cinnamon toast, and cherry liqueur permeate from the glass. All the verve and swagger of a Napa Valley stalwart for half the price. You win.

’15 Cornerstone Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga, Napa Valley Calistoga with altitude, now we’re talking! From a beautifully farmed, off-the-grid vineyard high on the Palisades, winemaker Kari Auringer crafted an absolute stunner! Black olives, black cherries, pipe tobacco, mocha, and creamy blackberries make this an indulgent treat. This is the kind of wine you bring to a dinner party to impress all your friends!

’16 Tenuta Meraviglia Rosso Bolgheri NEW! This is a debut wine for us from an exciting new property in Sassicaia country, Bolgheri. Suckling dug its “essence-like nose with plenty of blackberry perfume and herbal liqueur, as well as treacle and ash. Full body, round tannins and a fruit forward finish.” The effortless interplay of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc will stand up to any Bordeaux or Napa Blend. Grab a bottle of this for “Steak Night” and we’re certain you’ll be calling us up to order more.

This 929-year old “heirloom property” of Chianti Classico was lovingly restored to former glory by wine entrepreneur Alejandro Bulgheroni, beginning in 2012. The wine fills the room with classic aromas of dusty red cherries and earth, red roses and toasted, spicy almonds and soft caressing tannins that tie it all together and keep you coming back sip after sip. ’15 Dievole “Vigna di Sessina” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione What’s a Gran Selezione, you ask? It’s basically a “super-Riserva” of a winery’s finest vineyards, with longer time in barrel, and higher minimum alcohol and dry extract. It’s a winery’s Grand Cru expression, like this beautiful 100% Sangiovese form the Sessina vineyard that Suckling loved for its “Aromas of cinnamon, tree bark, resin and ripe fruit. Dark berries, too. Full-bodied, chewy and tannic.” A masterpiece of Tuscany, built to age and impress. The master pairing here is Bistecca alla Fiorentina, with a healthy drizzle of Tuscan olive oil and sprinkling of sea salt.

It’s a modern Brunello,” and Galloni raved, “Herbs, sweet spices and coffee complicate sexy plum and sweet spice flavors… Outstanding Brunello that really builds on you.” Don’t let the name fool you, this is an absolute beauty that lives up to the high praise and delivers in the glass. WINE

Know what this wine reminds us of? Buying 2002 Lafite-Rothschild for $100 per bottle in 2003. Today that wine trades for as much as $1,000. This gem of a Barolo is a giveaway! The Wine Advocate marveled at the “intense inner energy it delivers from deep within and by the unyielding nature of its textural richness. There is muscle power here and determination…The wine offers an important sense of longevity that starts with a focused and immediate delivery of dark fruit, spice, tar and smoke.” Put this one away for a long rest, and drink in the rosy dividends!

Full body with ripe and chewy tannins, but this remains focused and dialed-in thanks to mouthwatering acidity. Not to mention beautiful blue fruit that comes to the surface, particularly on the long finish.” This Gran Selezione can hang with any great Brunello, any day of the week, Jack! JS

There’s only one Dal Forno, the undisputed master of Amarone. Why not treat yourself to one of the greatest dessert wines ever made in Italy? This is a recioto, or sweet, Amarone, that is from another planet. The Wine Advocate describes “a masterpiece that is impossible to repeat. In fact, the wine has not been produced since 2004…a generous flow of dark spice, bitter chocolate, espresso, raisin, plum, barbecue spice and teriyaki smoke. The concentration and layering of the wine are both rare and distinctive...I can think of no other wine that comes close to matching this unique style.” Drizzle this heavenly elixir in your mouth, on strawberries, or even on someone you love, and float away on its magic carpet.

It’s a sweltering Spring afternoon and your feet are up as you look out over your infinity pool, deep in the hills of Provence. You’ve got a glistening, ice-cold glass of this refreshing, dry rosé in hand, full of aromas of crushed strawberry, watermelon, grapefruit rind, and white roses. Stock up on a case of this classic rosé, and keep this daydream going all summer?

’16 Clos Saint Jean “La Combe des Fous” Chablis 1er Chateauneuf du Pape “The Fool’s Hollow” is what they called it when, in 1905, old man Tacussel planted Grenache in a super-rocky, barren section of Châteauneuf’s “La Crau” near Vieux Telegraphe. Those 111-year old vines are the core of this monster CDP that Jeb Dunnuck called “a huge, unctuous effort that packs an incredible amount of blackcurrants, garrigue, pepper and dried flowers into its balanced, elegant, layered personality…this heavenly juice shouldn’t be missed by any Rhône lover.” For its immaculate aromatics, old-vine intensity on the palate, and sheer Grenache hedonism, this is not to be missed. From 5070-year old vines on their own roots, in pure chalk, we were stunned by the sheer concentration of flavor in this “uncrowned Grand Cru.” Full-bodied and packed with sweet fruit, palate-staining lemon-lime richness, and leesy, honeyed, mandarin orange blossom scents. We strongly recommend a case of this wine for poolside parties, fresh crab and lobster broil, or simply relaxing on the back deck watching the sun go down.

Just across the road from the Grand Cru “Clos de la Roche” and named for a field where millet once grew, this is a dazzling red Burgundy of which only one barrel—ours—exists in the world. Redolent of crushed raspberries, white pepper, roses, black tea, and Chambord liqueur, this gorgeous Morey puts the grand 2016 vintage on full display! BODEGA GARZÓN

N E W W O R L D W I N E RY O F T H E Y E A R 2 0 1 8 ! SOUTH AMERICA

Blessed with pristine views of the Atlantic, an unspoiled ecosystem, and dusty, charismatic back streets, the Punta del Este zone of Uruguay is very quickly becoming a new Côte d’Azur for discerning travelers of means. Nearby, wine entrepreneur Alejandro Bulgheroni established Bodega Garzón, a sustainable, earth-friendly wine estate, restaurant, and private club. Wind and solar power provide 40% of the property’s energy needs, and world-renowned chef Francis Mallman is the Ambassador and Culinary Director for the estate. Quite simply, no expense has been spared to make this winery a showpiece of the southern hemisphere, and Wine Enthusiast took notice, awarding Bodega Garzón the title “New World Winery of The Year” in 2018.

WINE

’17 Bodega Garzón “Reserva” Tannat • Uruguay From Garzón’s free-draining granite sands comes this gorgeously opulent and inviting Tannat, a world (and an ocean) away from the super-tannic, often austere wines of Madiran. Look for notes of crushed boysenberry, red plum, toasted herbs, and a faintly saline, marine note. This is a fabulous wine to pair with hearty fare like smoked short ribs this spring. Napa Cabernet lovers, you’re going to want a case of this deep red seductress and some red meat, stat.

’17 Bodega Garzón “Reserve” Albariño • Uruguay Like Albariño’s home terroir in Galicia, granitic soils and proximity to the Atlantic create a perfect habitat for grapes that imbue the finished wine with minerality, ripe peach pulp, green melons, and white flowers. Get that halibut, jumbo prawns, and fresh lemon ready for the grill!

’16 Bodega Garzón “Balasto” Red Wine • Uruguay NEW! It’s been a year now since “Balasto” made its auspicious debut for sale on the Place de Bordeaux, one of a handful of South American wines accorded that honor. This 2016 shows you why. Winemakers Alberto Antonini and Germán Bruzzone have summoned a symphony of flavors that James Suckling described as “blueberries, licorice, forest floor, underbrush and dark chocolate…as well as tile and clay. The palate shows a unique combination of agile blue fruit and acid drive with firm, grainy tannins and a chewy, very mineral finish.” Cellar and serve this as you would a First-Growth Bordeaux!
