The beach that beckons A summertime escape to the sun and sand in Parksville by SUSAN LUNDY

ith the first step onto the warm sand at Rathtrevor Beach — breathing in the mingled scent of ocean air, seaweed and salt water — it all comes rushing back. I recall buckets and shovels and splashing through tide pools on this very beach as a child. Then I remember those magical, languid sunny days on the same stretch of sand as a young

mother — with sandy, little fingers clutching my hands, pulling me here and there — watching handstands and cartwheels, and wading and swimming in the surprisingly warm water. It’s actually the same beach where my mother and father walked hand-in-hand as a young couple and close to where my grandparents set up camp in neighbouring Qualicum to access this beautiful shoreline in an area now known as Oceanside.
