Message from the Maritime Simmental Association

Dear Friends of Simmental: I want to welcome everyone to our 50th Anniversary of Simmentals in Canada. This is a special year for the MSA and for the breed itself. There are so many stories that could be told about Simmen tals in the last 50 years all across Canada. Each individual has their own special story and fond memories at special Simmen tal events in their area. This is what makes this breed so great to be a part of! A long time ago, I was told that this was a special breed to belong to because of the people involved in it. That’s right, the PEOPLE! I soon found this to be true, the longer I was involved with the Simmental breed. I wish you all the best in your annual Fundraising Auction! I have attended a few of these over the years and the support from the community is overwhelming. The people from the Maritimes are doing their part in helping make this a very worthy cause, and I am hoping this will continue into the future.

Who is the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation

The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation (FCSF) is a not-for-profit registered foundation dedicated to scholarship and educational support of youth in the business of agriculture and Simmental cattle. The Foundation is governed by a board of directors who are heavily involved in the Simmental industry and who have a vested interest in educating youth, developing leadership, and encouraging young people to be a part of the agriculture industry. The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation belongs to all of those that had the vision to believe in bringing the Simmental breed to Canada, those that supported and have developed it over the past 50 years, and those that see the value it brings to the generations of the future.

Focus of the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation

Scholarships - The FCSF administers scholarships for youth who are involved in Canadian agriculture. Assisting in the development of youth with a focus on advancing their understanding of agriculture is a very important component of the FCSF. Youth Development - The FCSF supports youth programs such as the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). The YCSA is one of the most progressive and dynamic agricultural youth organizations in Canada. It is open to anyone 25 years and under who then have the opportunity to participate in various activities across Canada. YCSA members learn important skills including public speaking, marketing and communications which develop strong and dynamic leaders for not only our industry, but society as a whole.

Research and Development - The FCSF is actively engaged in supporting research to benefit the agriculture industry in Canada. This work is focused on improving the Canadian beef industry by enhancing production efficiency, product quality and profitability.

What the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation is doing

FSCF Scholarships

The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation is honored to administer 3 exciting post-secondary scholarships. The Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation recognizes the importance of supporting youth in agriculture and their goals of advanced education. The scholarship program is one of the ways that the Foundation intends to support youth and the future of the livestock industry. In 2017 the FSCF is excited to award $12,000 in scholarships. The current 2016 winners are listed on page 6 or go online to www.simmentalfoundation.com to find past winners and the current application form that can be used for all three of the scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year. Youth Development The FCSF supports youth programs such as the Young Canadian Simmental Association (YCSA). The YCSA is one of the most progressive and dynamic agricultural youth organizations in Canada. It is open to anyone 25 years and under who then have the opportunity to participate in various activities across Canada. For 2017 the FCSF direclty supporting YCS with a portion of the Fundraiser auction proceeds directly to the YCS program to assist in running of their 2017-18 activities. Here are just some of the great things we hear back from past YCSA members about this great program “I was a part of the YCSA program for 14 years. I have met many youth across the country that are going to be lasting friendships for years to come. The YCSA experience has been something I will never forget. It has showed me leadership, marketing and moments and friendships I could have never found anywhere else. Youth that is excited about their operations and the breed of cattle they raise. It shows that the Simmental breed is in good hands for the future. Good luck to all of the Junior's in Lloydminster, have fun and meet as many juniors as you can. This will be an experience you will never forget.” Tiffany Peters

“The benefits of my years in YCS program have proven lifelong; Not only through my involvement in the cattle industry but also in my role as an educator. Work ethic, social engagement, and goal setting are just a few of the skills members can attain. The Friends of Canadian Simmentals Foundation's support of YCS endeavours assists in the preparation of leaders for tomorrow.” Joe Barnett

“The YCSA program literally opened my eyes to the world. In 1999 when I was selected to “Travel the World with Simmental” as the CSA Youth Ambassador I had no idea the impact those twelve months would have on my life. This experience inspired me to pursue a career with the Canadian Foreign Service and provided me with an overseas branch on my family tree that continues to grow and flourish. The YCSA program instilled in me early on the value and importance of communication and being a leader. The friendships made over the years continue to be very strong despite the many miles in some cases that lay between us. The bond and friendship formed is a unique one – it seems no matter how many years pass since the last visit we can always just pick up where we left off. I am forever grateful to the YCSA program and will always be a proud alumni.” Dana Lajoie (Hicks)

"As one of the very early members of the Saskatchewan YCS, there are a few things that stand out for me. One being the friendship's that were started then and still continue today. Back then the standing President was invited to the Saskatchewan Simmental Association board meetings, I remember the first one and how nervous I was the night before knowing that I would be seated beside all of these very important Simmental Breeders. Then to top it off I was asked what I thought about one of the discussion topics . WOW. One more thing , does anyone remember the Donkey up in the Queensbury at Agribition. Thanks it was a great experience." Marlin LeBlanc “I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in the YCSA for the last 13 years. It has developed who I am and brought me to where I am today. These years have provided opportunities such as travelling across Canada for National Classics as well as to Lima, Ohio for their American National. The YCSA program has developed my skills as a leader, built friendships and given me memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you to the Friends of Simmental Foundation and CSA for supporting this wonderful youth program. Your generosity will continue to shape the youth of today into the leaders of tomorrow.” Heather Creamer

Brittany Barkley • Ingleside, ON

2016 Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarship Winner

Justin is currently in the first year of his Masters program at the University of Alberta, where his area of study is ruminant nutrition. He grew up in Evansburg, Alberta where his family operates Rosadiuk Ranches. Justin remains actively involved in the everyday operations of the farm, and has built up a small purebred Simmental division that operates as JPR Farms. “I am both thankful and honored to be awarded one of the 2016 Friends of the Canadian Simmental Foundation Scholarships. Thank you to the Foundation for their consideration and the investment in the youth involved with the great Simmental breed.”

My name is Brittany Barkley and alongside my parents we operate Hi-Tech Farms located in Ingleside, Ontario. Currently, I am enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technician program at Trillium College. I have always been actively involved in the family farm where my main job is maintaining all the herd records. My passion for show cattle began when I was quite young, I started out in 4-H and soon extended into the YCS program, where I have been fortunate enough to compete at various shows throughout Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, and Alberta. My 4-H & YCS careers have lead me into becoming a 4-H leader, the OYCSA adult advisor as well as a director of the OSA. I am extremely honoured to be chosen as a recipient of one of the Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation Awards, I can’t thank you enough for the support and encouragement that you have provided to the youth of our breed. I will always be thankful for the many opportunities, learning experiences and life-long friends that have been provided to me over the years through the Simmental breed.

Being raised on our family farm, Little Willow Creek Ranch, near Frenchman Butte, Saskatchewan, I was able to be involved in my family’s cattle operation from branding, cattle drives to driving silage trucks. I am very proud to say I have been part of the Simmental family my entire life. I have always been very active in my school, community, music and school sport teams. For the past three summers, I have taught children in the Red Cross water safety program. I am very honored and grateful to have been chosen as a recipient of Dr. Dixon Scholarship. Thank you Friends of Canadian Simmental Foundation for this Scholarship. Matthew Edwards • Carbon, AB

2016 Dr. Allan A. Dixon Memorial Scholarship Winner

My name is Matthew Edwards. I grew up in Carbon, AB helping my grandpa on the farm. I have a passion for working with animals which is evident through the time I spend with my 4H projects and horses. My highlight showing came this past summer having the opportunity to show my 3-year-old cow/calf pair at the Calgary Stampede and win the commercial supreme female. Me and my siblings have started a farm operation through our 4H projects called SMRT livestock and I hope to continue showing Simmental cattle through this venue. I have been actively involved in many school sports with basketball being my focus. In my spare time, I enjoy horse rides in the mountains, snowboarding and water sports. I am currently attending Ambrose University, enrolled in biology courses and playing basketball. I intend to pursue a career in veterinary medicine hoping to compliment my love for the farm.

Carson Rodgers • MacGregor, MB

Frank along with his family have donated the heifer for Lot 1 of the auction. Tryon Simmentals has been breeding Fleckvieh Simmentals since 1986 when Frank along with his father Harry decided to get into purebred cattle. In 1988 they purchased a few cattle from the Rolling Hills dispersal that was held in their barn. One of them was RH Patricia who turned out to be the foundation of their herd. Over the years they have built the herd to 40-45 cows and began marketing them through the Fleckvieh forum sale in Ontario from 1998 until they moved to the Bar 5 sale in 2009. They currently run about 45 cows and market cattle through the Eastern Harvest sale. The farm is a family affair with Frank, his wife Lynn and three boys Rowan, Davis and Bradley being involved. Thank you to the Robblee Family for this generous donation.

Climax 12C is a meticulously bred specimen whom hails from one of the most consistent flushes in recent history. Climax created quite a stir at the "Kuntz Bull Sale" where he demanded the attention of everyone. When the gavel sounded Climax had garnished an impressive $47,000.00. He combines the rich mahogany hair coat and locomotion of a fine-tuned athlete, he carries a tremendous amount of depth, and is as wide as they come. Climax has the genetic potential we all envision. His tremendously uddered dam, Kuntz Miss Moses 03X, is one of the most consistent producers of herd sires stomping the ground. She is fully loaded with powerful genetics; such as the highly sought after MFL Zaila 8Z,Knight 155S, C&B Western, Rogant just to name a few! Sired by the industry leading South Seven Mr Adonis 96Z compounds Donated By: the genetics [Bonnie Lass, Dorothy Jane, Solway Adonis, Houston 005H and Arni 8M] to truly make a difference in your next calf crop.
