Lipstick may contain metal in toxic amounts, warns S. Katharine Hammond, PhD. Recent finding: Daily use of lipstick and/or lip gloss may expose women to excessive amounts of the metal chromium, which is associated with stomach cancer. Also, 75% of products tested contained lead. Currently, there is no way for consumers to find out a product’s metal content—so apply lip coloring less frequently and/ or in smaller amounts.

Ten-year fixed-rate home mortgages offer low interest rates, says mortgage expert Keith Gumbinger. The loans are gaining popularity as interest rates jump on 15- and 30-year mortgages. You still can get an ultra-low rate of around 3% on a 10-year loan, which can save a lot of money. Example: On a home with $100,000 left in principal to pay, refinancing at 4% for 30 years will cost you $71,869 in interest with $477 in monthly payments…while a 3% loan for 10 years costs just $15,873 in interest but has monthly payments of $965. You should still cut back on salt despite a new report that says there is no benefit to cutting back, we hear from Linda Van Horn, PhD, RD. A recent Institute of Medicine review of multiple studies said that keeping levels below 2,300 mg/ day provided no health benefit to many Americans. But most Americans eat far more sodium than that—3,500 mg/day. Cutting sodium intake to well below 3,500 mg/day will significantly benefit cardiovascular health by reducing high blood pressure. Linda Van Horn, PhD, RD, is professor in preventive medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago.

To help you find Buffett-like picks, Bottom Line/Personal spoke with John Reese, who has made a career out of analyzing investments by Buffett and other legendary investors… BORING YET RELIABLE

boring-yet-reliable stocks. Since its 2003 inception, my 10-stock Buffett portfolio has had a cumulative return of 88% (an average of 7% annually) versus 53% (4% annually) for the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index. Over the same period, Buffett’s own Berkshire Hathaway stock had a total return of 106%. But small investors have somewhat of an advantage now. Buffett has stated candidly that his company and its investment portfolio are so large that he can no longer invest in stellar small companies and achieve the outsized returns of the past. As a small investor, however, you can >>
