About Us

“At Talbot House Preparatory School, we take pride in our reputation for providing a quality education, where high academic standards are achieved in a traditional, happy and successful environment.

“A sense of community, fostered through positive relationships, mutual respect and good communication.” Founded in 1969, Talbot House has always had a reputation for high academic standards, good manners and a consideration for others, with an excellent success rate for the number of pupils who gain places at the local Grammar Schools, as well as scholarships to local independent schools. The school caters for children from 3 to 11 years of age.

It is our aim that children come to school each day with a desire to learn, a smile on their face, and a motivation to do their very best. Our small class sizes allow our pupils to receive levels of high quality, personalised attention that are more challenging to achieve in larger environments. The children benefit from a team of dedicated staff who are committed to helping each and every child fulfil their potential. Good manners, high expectations, an aspiration to succeed and an ethos of respecting and caring for one another, all combine to make Talbot House an exceptional school to which we are all proud to belong and where real learning happens. We invite you to visit our school and see first-hand all that we have to offer. I look forward to meeting you and finding out more about your son or daughter.” Mrs Emma Haworth BA (Hons), PGCE, MA (Ed), ILMP

Early Years Foundation Stage (Ages 3-5 years) For children entering the school at Early Years level, we provide a springboard for learning through a balance of structured teaching and play. The formal teaching of Mathematics and English, which are the fundamental building blocks to understanding and learning, begins in Kindergarten. The children benefit not only from the provision of a high quality education in their own well-equipped area which meets the expectations of the Early Years Foundation Stage, but also from being fully integrated into the life of the whole School. We offer a wide range of subjects to ensure that even our youngest pupils receive a broad and balanced curriculum which challenges and extends each individual.

Key Stage 1 (Age 5-7 years) and Key Stage 2 (Age 7-11 years) Throughout the rest of the School, the curriculum continues to offer a variety of learning opportunities, allowing children to explore, engage and become excited by a variety of subjects and topics. Learning also continues to focus on achieving a solid grounding in the basics and the formal teaching of English and Mathematics is complemented by the more ‘traditional’ classroom settings. Great emphasis is placed upon ensuring challenge and pace through our rich curriculum as we seek to ensure that each child achieves their full potential. Teaching and learning is based upon staff understanding and challenging each child as an individual. The school’s curriculum consists of: English, Mathematics, Science and I.C.T as well as History, Geography, French, P.E, Swimming, Music, Design and Technology, Drama and Art.

Upper Key Stage 2 is particularly rigorous as we prepare children for the expectations of the secondary school of their choice. In addition to the school’s curriculum, we enhance the learning of our oldest children by offering focused Grammar School preparation. Children with Exceptional Abilities We recognise that very able children have exceptional needs and it is imperative that they are fully challenged. Therefore, as a School, we are committed to enriching the learning process for all and extending the very able so that they can thrive and fulfil their potential.

Ethos and Culture “ Providing a positive atmosphere, giving praise for achievement and progress. Children and THPS We strive to ensure that children at THPS are happy and fulfilled and know that they play an important role in the life of the School. Our children benefit from the diversity of our school community and we pride ourselves on nurturing individuals who recognise similarities, celebrate differences and are open-minded and accepting of the world around them. Great emphasis is placed on good manners and traditional values, and expectations of behaviour are very high. We pride ourselves on nurturing a happy, family-like atmosphere where contributions and achievements are celebrated. Children’s achievements both in and beyond the classroom are celebrated in our weekly assembly and newsletter and our pupils enjoy regular success and praise during their time in school. Houses All children in the School are placed in one of four houses. The awarding of house points provides an excellent opportunity to promote positive behaviour and to motivate children to achieve their best. House points can be achieved for demonstrating the values of our school, academic achievements and effort, and sporting success. Our houses also compete at our annual School Sports day and Swimming Gala. Roles Throughout the school, we aim to nurture confident, articulate children who willingly seek out responsibility and leadership opportunities. From within our Year 6 class we elect a Head boy and girl who are supported in their roles by deputies. Each house also has two team captains, also chosen from our Year 6 pupils. In addition, all children in the Upper School have the opportunity to stand for election to the School Council. This group of children work together to make suggestions and to contribute to the life of the school. Educational Visits Educational visits are organised to support and enhance the delivery of the curriculum. Outings to sites of national heritage, local sites of importance and field trips help us bring learning to life. Our older children participate in occasional annual residential trips. Special Events Several events are held throughout the year to give recognition for achievement, effort and progress. These events are a wonderful opportunity for our whole school community to celebrate the talents of our pupils and include a prize giving afternoon, dramatic performances, sports day and an annual swimming gala.

Partnership with Parents Education is a partnership between home and school and we place a great deal of emphasis on our relationship with parents. We believe that children learn best when home and school work together for their benefit. Communication We believe that communication is key to establishing such positive relationships. Class teachers will happily meet with parents at a mutually convenient time to discuss their child and any questions or concerns that may arise, and the Headteacher is also readily available. Weekly newsletters are sent out along with other notes about events, activities etc. All letters and information can also be accessed via the School website. Parents are given more formal feedback about their child’s progress through the two reports issued each year; in the autumn and summer terms. They are also encouraged to attend the parents’ meetings that are held each term. Attendance In order for children to fully benefit from their time at Talbot House, we believe that regular school attendance is paramount. We work with our parents to ensure that good attendance is promoted and maintained.

Uniform Children wear our uniform with pride and are expected to present themselves smartly at all times. Full details of the uniform are available on our website or by request. Homework From Kindergarten through to Year 6, homework is a part of our routine. We understand that learning is an on-going process and does not take place solely at school. Homework is a wonderful opportunity for our children to share their learning experiences. Homework enables the children to take pride in their work, develop good work habits and allows us to assess just how much they have understood and retained. Our approach is based upon a positive partnership between home and school. At Talbot House we love reading and we encourage children to read a wide variety of books. All children in lower school share a book with their teacher each day. As well as asking parents to hear their child read every evening, we also encourage children to take books from our well stocked library to share at home.

Life at Talbot House “An attractive learning environment maintained by teaching pupils to respect and take responsibility for places and people.” Lunches As a school, we actively encourage a healthy lifestyle. Children bring fruit for their snack and are encouraged to drink water freely each day. The school provides all children with nutritionally balanced meals cooked on the premises. Menus can be accessed on our website. We aim to cater for all children with dietary or religious requirements and children are offered the choice of a second pudding option of yoghurt or fruit. Sport We know that sport can play a vital role in developing a child’s confidence and therefore we aim to provide opportunities for children to benefit from a range of sporting activities to suit all abilities and interests. Children participate in weekly PE lessons off site and also have weekly swimming coaching at a local pool. ICT Our children benefit from the use of our modern, well-equipped ICT suite. Children have skills-based ICT lessons each week with a specialist teacher and there are also opportunities for classes to use the suite with other teachers. Throughout the school, classrooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards and each class has access to a full set of portable laptops. Extra Murals At Talbot House, we appreciate our pupils as individuals and know how important it is for them to be exposed to a wide range of stimulating activities. We therefore offer a programme of after school activities, on and off site, which can include: individual music tuition (guitar, flute, keyboard, drums, saxophone), ballet, Spanish, art, science/environmental, tennis and team sports such as football, netball, rugby and cricket.

Admissions Our procedure for Admissions is quite straightforward. Once you have expressed an interest with us, we will invite you to have a tour of the school and to meet with the Headteacher. Following a successful visit, we will invite your child for an Evaluation Day. We use this day as an opportunity to assess the the suitability of our school for your child’s needs and to gauge your child’s potential success with us. Evaluation of our youngest children is informal and is achieved through the observation of children and their engagement in the class learning and play. For entry from Year 1 and above, evaluation takes the form of more formal assessment especially in the proficiency of English and Mathematics.

Family Owned THPS is a family owned business which was acquired in 1998 by the Broadway family and over this time the school has embraced developments in education and resources that further benefit the children attending.
