Credit risk from balances with banks and financial institutions is managed by the Group in accordance with the Group’s policy. Counterparty credit limits are reviewed by the Group’s Risk Department on an annual basis and may be updated throughout the year subject to approval of the Group’s Investment Committee and where necessary the Board of Directors. The limits are set to minimize the concentration of risks and therefore mitigate financial loss through potential counterparty’s failure to make payments.

Risk Limit Control and Mitigation Policies

The Group manages, limits and controls concentrations of credit risk wherever they are identified − in particular, to individual counterparties and groups, and to industries and countries.

The Group structures the levels of credit risk it undertakes by placing limits on the amount of risk accepted in relation to one borrower, or groups of borrowers, and to the industry segments. Such risks are monitored on a revolving basis and subject to an annual or more frequen t review, when considered necessary by the Board of Directors.

Exposure to credit risk is also managed through regular analysis of the ability of borrowers and potential borrowers to meet interest and capital repayment obligations and by changing these l ending limits where appropriate.

Some other specific control and mitigation measures are outlined below.

Collateral

The Group employs a range of policies and practices to mitigate credit risk. The most traditional of these is the taking of security for funds advanced, which is common practice. The Group implements guidelines on the acceptability of specific classes of collateral or credit risk mitigation. The principal collateral types for loans and advances are:

• Mortgages over residential properties;

• Charges over business assets such as properties, inventory and accounts receivable; and

• Charges over financial instruments such as debt securities and equities.

The Group’s credit risk management policies include requirements relat ing to collateral valuation and management, including verification requirements and legal certainty. Valuations are updated periodically depending upon the nature of the collateral. Management monitors the market value of collateral and requests additional collateral in accordance with the underlying agreement during its periodic review of loan accounts in arrears. Policies are in place to monitor the existence of undesirable concentration in the collateral supporting the Group’s credit exposure.

Longer-term finance and lending to corporate customers and individuals are generally secured. In addition, in order to minimise the credit loss, the Group will seek additional collateral from the counterparty as soon as impairment indicators are noticed for the relevant individual loans and advances.
