LONGFELLOW HOUSE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

This 1759 Georgian mansion was home to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow from 1837 to 1882. It also served as George Washington’s headquarters during the siege of Boston in 1775–76. Sights of Interest CAMBRIDGE COMMON/ OLD BURYING GROUND Massachusetts Avenue and Garden Street. A grazing pasture and cemetery for Puritan Newtowne, as well as a favorite meeting spot for public figures and a tent site for the Continental Army. Early college presidents and town residents were buried in “God’s Acre” across from the Common. CHRIST CHURCH Zero Garden St., 617-876-0200, cccambridge.org. HARVARD AND RADCLIFFE YARDS Located within Harvard Campus. The centers of two institutions that have played major educational roles since Harvard’s founding in 1636. Founded in 1831, Mount Auburn was the first landscaped cemetery in the country. Many prominent Americans are buried here, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Isabella Stewart Gardner and Winslow Homer. The cemetery is also an arboretum, sculpture garden and wildlife sanctuary. TORY ROW (BRATTLE STREET) One of the nation’s most beautiful residential streets, Tory Row is the site of Loyalist mansions and their elegant neighbors from nearly every period of early American architecture.
