Celebrating our 6th Anniversary in Brooklyn! The Brooklyn Book Fair occupies a very special place among my 6 fairs. There’s just something about the vibe at this fair that doesn’t happen at any of the others. It was my intent from the first year of this fair to attempt to attract attendees who may love books but may be new to antiquarian books. A couple years ago, I started to add talks and special exhibits as a way to attract people to the fair with a variety of interests. My hope was that once they entered the fair they would be introduced to this magical world and think about what they would love to collect. It was serendipity that Brian Chidester happened to work at the fair last year when I discovered that his art history and collecting experience and his interest in the items being sold would lead to a conversation and ultimately an offer to plan the programming for the fair. Brian has attracted a impressive list of speakers. I believe that these talks and exhibits at the fair are unique among antiquarian book fairs. I’d love to receive your feedback about this year’s programming. Our tag line is “cultivating great collections one item at a time.” Many people have the start of a collection but don’t know how to develop it into something more. The dealers at this fair will be happy to educate you about expanding your collection. This year we’ve instituted a way to find items in lower price ranges. Look for the yellow signs that will indicate shelves of lower priced items. And of course, you’ll also see items with much higher prices, something to aim towards as you build your collection. Marvin Getman Producer

Enjoy the fair!

A special thank you to Amy “Bannerqueen” Johnquest for designing this year’s poster from this cabinet card. 3

A Note from the Curator It was a few days after the close of last year's Brooklyn Antiquarian Book Fair that promoter Marvin Getman called me with an offer to create programming for this year's fair. I'd worked as his assistant for the last one and could only surmise it was during one of our many discussions that weekend that he figured I could deliver the goods for 2019. I wasn't so sure myself. Firstly, the 2018 fair had gotten a “New York Times” pick in its calendar section, which is no small feat in this day and age; and secondly, the fair itself yielded its best numbers for attendance in six years of existence. Yet Marvin's confidence in me seemed all but resolute and I suppose at that point it felt safe to go for broke. Two art exhibitions and ten hour-long presentations are the result. The next major hurdle was to give the programming a feeling both specific to its location and relevant to the times. Brooklyn being one of the major centers of subculture internationally, we decided early on to tap into its non-mainstream energy, and to acknowledge a number of emerging trends. These include: the renewed interest in alternative spirituality and the growing market for alternative modes of media. The first presentation topics we landed on were the ones regarding witchcraft, esoteric religion, mysticism, spirit photography, and the collecting of spell books; and the speakers we tapped for these were Brian Cotnoir, Pam Grossman, Alessandro Keegan, and William Kiesel, all specialists/practitioners/collectors in their respective fields. The seminar on African-American comics auteur Charles Williams (as presented by Philip March Jones) came next and allowed me to delve deeper into the current mistrust of the establishment media (and the American system in general) by looking back at a figure who existed for his entire life on the outside. (Besides being black and growing up in the South during the Jim Crow era, Williams was also an untaught artist, poor, and homosexual.) This incredible talk led to my idea for our two art exhibitions— “One Day You'll See: A History of Afrofuturism” and “Charles A.A. Dellschau and the Mythology of Flight”—each opening further onto non-mainstream perspectives in the areas of art and technology. They both also focus on another favorite idea of mine—that the line between fact and fantasy is a perpetually blurry one. “Afrofuturism” is a term I'd heard bandied about for at least fifteen years now; though I don't think I ever actually met an artist who considered himself or herself an Afrofuturist. As a critical convenience or general umbrella term for black writers/artists/filmmakers/musicians whose work is considered futuristic or speculative, this term allowed me and co-curators Stacey A. Robinson and Suave Rhoomes to examine a large swath of historical samples from roughly 1919 to the present, while at the same time challenging its inherently essentializing ideas. In the end we found that most or all of these aesthetic visions used spiritual continuity and a wide-open imagination to challenge hate and oppression and inspire hope.

Charles Dellschau (1830-1921) is already considered one of the major figures in the history of Outsider Art. Yet heretofore the various surveys of his handmade manuscripts have focused on their unacademic nature, on their hermetically-sealed code of symbols and wordplay, and on the artist's own obsession with the mysterious flying machines he claimed to've seen in the 1850s (designed by a group of fraternal engineers living in Sonora, CA). No historian, however, has yet examined Dellschau as a modern mythologist or an epic storyteller. Yet that's exactly what this exhibition attempts to do—show how the artist subjected the mainstream history of flight, via cut-outs of contemporary news clippings, to his own fantasy-laden approach and worldview. Lastly, I'd like to give a shout out to the dealers themselves, who by digging out and offering the most intriguing and often wackiest samples from history (in books and ephemera), gave rise to this year's programming. I remain at heart a collector, and believe strongly that the greatest treasures are not the ones sitting in some museum or library, but rather in our attics and barns, antique stores and antiquarian fairs. They are the portals by which we transport ourselves to other states of consciousness and inspire us anew to think outside the box. And to that end... May each of us find what we're looking for.

Brian Chidester Curator
