Mede onder invloed van deze oudere generatie zetten de jongeren zich - geheel in de traditie van het communisme - graag af tegen kapitalistisch Amerika. Dit doen ze dan wel met een flesje Coca-Cola in de hand en een Marlborosigaret tussen de lippen. Onder meer door de komst van televisiezenders als MTV ontstaan er nieuwe subculturen en veroveren westerse merken de trendgevoelige Russische jongeren. Hoe is het om op te groeien in een land waarin zowel de communistische invloeden van vroeger, als de kapitalistische invloeden vanuit het rijke Westen de jongeren in hun greep lijken te hebben? © juni 2004
like to live under communism. But as they had never experienced it for themselves, they were not able to judge it. What they did experience was the complete collapse of the Russian economy in 1992 which left them cueing for a loaf of bread with their parents. Under Vladimir Poetin the Russian economy has now partly stabilised. But still young people hear grandfathers and grandmothers tell stories about the good old times of communism. And partly due to the influence of this older generation the youth still likes to react against capitalist America - they are reacting true to the spirit of communism. But nevertheless they do this with a bottle of Coca-Cola in their hands, smoking a Marlboro cigarette at the same time. The introduction of broadcast companies like MTV have a great influence on the emergence of new subcultures in Russia, while western designer cloths sweep the Russian market. What is it like to be raised in a county in which both communist influences from the old days and capitalist influences from the wealthy West seem to have a firm grip on Russian youth?
