an Gierlak enters his 22nd season at the helm of the Edinboro University soft ball program. The veteran coach guided Edinboro to its second straight appearance in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament, as a young team with freshmen at many key positions finished with a 1918 record. In fact, they may have been in line for their second trip in three years to the NCAA Playoffs if not for six straight losses to end the season. The last two came in the PSAC playoffs. In 2009 Gierlak guided the Fighting Scots to a schoolrecord 26 wins, as Edinboro finished with a 2619 ledger. The 26 wins surpassed the 1986 squad which finished 238. Edinboro qualified for the PSAC Playoffs for the second time in three years, and third time overall, winning a pair of games. Edinboro finished as the number two seed out of the Western Division. The 2009 Fighting Scot squad also had its firstever AllAmerican, as second base man Dana Webb was named to the third team Louisville Slugger/NFCA AllAmerican Team, and was a first team Daktronics All American. Webb also became the first Fighting Scot recognized as the PSAC West Player of the Year. Gierlak has now guided the Fighting Scots to six twentywin campaigns in his 21 years. He owns an overall record of 327 4343. In 2008 the Fighting Scots barely missed qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, fin ishing the year with an 1820 record after

Page 2

losing five of their final seven contests. The 2007 campaign was one of its most successful seasons in school history, as the Fighting Scots made their second ever trip to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Playoffs, then were selected for the NCAA Playoffs. That marked the first time an Edinboro team had been selected for NCAA postsea son play. The Fighting Scots responded with a strong showing in the MidAtlantic Regional, upsetting nationallyranked Kutztown and Shippensburg before finally being eliminated. All told, Edinboro finished with a 2122 and was 127 in the PSAC West, good for sec ond place. The season was capped by a 10 win over the defending national

That was also the last team to win more conference games, as the 2000 edition went 146 in league plays. Gierlak began his coaching career in football before concentrating on softball. He coached the Edinboro softball team from 198994, then after a oneyear hiatus in 1995 to focus solely on his duties as an assistant on former head coach Tom Hollman’s foot ball staff, he returned in 1996 and has led the Fighting Scots ever since. After graduating from Edinboro in 1983, Gierlak moved on to Thiel College, serving as an assistant football coach in 1984. His next stop was semiprofessional football, direct ing the Chicago Cowboys to a national title in 1984 and a secondplace national finish in 1985. Gierlak returned to his alma mater in 1986, serving as an assistant football coach at Edinboro for nine seasons. He was responsible for the recruitment and coach ing of eight Fighting Scot AllAmericans, including 1989 Harlon Hill Finalist Elbert Cole and Jeremy O’Day, a 1996 firstteam All PSAC offensive lineman and a member of the 1998 CFL Grey Cup champion Toronto Argonauts and 2007 Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders. A native of Buffalo, New York, Gierlak graduated from Edinboro with a Bachelor’s

Gierlak and his wife, the former Amy Adams, reside in Edinboro and have three children, Alexandria Alicia (20), a sophomore on the Edinboro softball team, Daniel Jr. (Joey) (17) and Lauren (13). Amy is an Edinboro graduate, as well, and was the 1989 Nancy Acker Award winner, recogniz ing as the top senior female athlete at Edinboro.

Boro a Dangerous Team if Pitching Develops

Softball coaches call them “shooters”.

Stud starting pitchers. In the game of softball, if you have one you have a chance to be a big winner. They regularly dominate lineups, giv ing up a run or fewer. Edinboro head coach Dan Gierlak had one of those in Beth Mullins, and he rode her right arm to 30 wins and a berth in the PSAC Playoffs the last two years. Unfortunately, Mullins did not return this year, leaving Gierlak with a gaping hole to fill. “We’ll miss Beth,” Gierlak admitted. “It’s a big hole to fill. The group is very talented as a whole. They can give you a lot of different looks. It might not be seven innings. It’s a

committee. We’ll go with the hot hand. They have to learn to be pitchers, not throwers.” Pitching aside, Gierlak has put together a strong group of young players the last two years who have won 45 games during that period and are looking to mature into a PSAC title contender. For starters there’s Marissa Pullo, a sophomore shortstop who may be the most exciting player in the conference. A year ago Pullo was the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. Gierlak possesses not one but two strong catchers in Aimee Sisson and Ashley Black. Throw in Jessica VanDamia at second base and Kari Falk in center field and the Fighting Scots are very strong up the middle. It’s the ability to play defense that really has Gierlak excited. “Defensively it will be one of the best teams we’ve had,” related Gierlak. “We have depth in the infield, we have depth in the outfield. We can make the routine plays. Plus, we can make big plays. I think that will be the strength of the team. We’ve really learned to communicate well together. We played great defense throughout the entire fall.” Couple that with a lineup that has the chance to be very dangerous from top to bot tom and the Fighting Scots have a chance to improve on last year’s 1918 finish. “We have kind of changed our style,” Gierlak pointed out. “We have more speed from one through nine than we’ve had. But we’ll try to hit the long ball, get our cuts in. From one through nine I think they can be tough outs. Power, speed – it’s a nice mix. Plus we have depth. We’ve changed our offensive philosophy from stationtostation to hitting the gaps and being more aggressive.” A year ago Edinboro hit 32 home runs along with 64 doubles. The Fighting Scots had a .471 slugging percentage, ranking fourth in the PSAC. In addition to the lack of an anchor on the pitching staff, the schedule could stand in the way of a third straight PSAC playoff berth. “It doesn’t get any easier,” stressed Gierlak. “California is one of the most consis

Edinboro University Softball 2011

tent programs in the country. Slippery Rock is on the verge of being very good. The addition of Mercyhurst and Gannon has really picked things up. “I think from top to bottom our division is the toughest,” Gierlak flatly stated. “There’s not a lot separating everybody.” Edinboro will start the 2011 campaign with its annual southern trip from March 511 in Kissimmee, Florida. The Florida schedule gets underway with a contest against PSAC foe Indiana(Pa.), and includes games against Northern Kentucky, St. Cloud State and Ashland

Infielders For starters, Edinboro can call on two strong players at catcher. Junior Aimee Sisson is a twoyear starter who has started 79 of a possible 82 games behind the plate. After hit ting .250 as a freshman with a pair of homers she boosted her average to .318 a year ago, with six homers and a teamhigh 26 RBIs. “Aimee is our leader,” boasted Gierlak. “She has been our leader since arriving as a freshman. She has really matured. She comes up in big games and gets big hits. I think she is the best catcher in the conference, both offen sively and defensively. We look for another big year for her.” Oddly enough, while Sisson did not receive any postseason honors her backup, Ashley Black, was accorded first team AllPSAC West honors, albeit at designated hitter. Black saw little time behind the plate with Sisson available, but she would start there for many teams. Black’s bat, however, makes her a defi nite must in the lineup. The sophomore moved between catcher, first base and right field in addition to DH’ing, and despite her freshman status she took over as the cleanup hitter early in the year. Black was second on the team with a .361 average in 35 games, and was also second in runs batted in with 21. She displayed plenty of power with five doubles, a triple and a teamhigh seven home runs. The seven home runs ranks fourth in a season. “Ashley will be in the lineup,” stressed Gierlak, who once again envisions her playing in a utility role. “She has plenty of power, and

Edinboro University Softball 2011

has a great twostrike approach. She can rewrite a lot of power records.” Hardworking junior Caitlyn Rog and sophomore Jennifer Long are also available. Rog played in just two games last year, but Gierlak loves her workethic and team attitude. Long did not play last year due to shoulder surgery following her senior year in high school. Gierlak noted she can hit the long ball. After hitting .271 with six homers and 19 RBIs as a freshman Jade Thrower suffered through a minor sophomore slump. The strong first baseman slumped to .215 with four homers and 13 RBIs. She could also see time in right field and at designated hitter. “Jade has good power when she’s locked in,” stressed Gierlak. “She has one of the best bats on the team. She just need con

sistency. Plus, she’s worked hard on her defense.” In addition to Thrower and Black, Gierlak can call on Jess White or Kaitlyn Thompson at first base. White, a junior, was hitless in two at bats last year, but Gierlak notes that she hits the ball well and has improved greatly on defense. Thompson is a freshman from Madison(OH) High School who comes off a knee injury as a senior. A solid hitter, Gierlak sees her improving defensively as her knee strengthens. A year ago Gierlak the rest of the infield was comprised of a trio of freshmen, with red shirt freshman Jessica VanDamia manning sec ond base and true freshmen Marissa Pullo and Stephanie Cassidy on the left side at shortstop and third base, respectively. VanDamia hit just .232 with six doubles and two homers but drove in 14 runs. She also

committed just eight errors and had a .907 fielding percentage. She was hurt late in the year, as was Pullo, and they were definitely missed. “At times last year Jess came up real big,” pointed out Gierlak. “She was hurt late in the year and it really hurt us, both offensively and defensively. She is very consistent in the field and she hits the ball hard.” Pullo, meanwhile, is the catalyst of the Edinboro attack. She enjoyed a recordbreak ing season as Edinboro’s shortstop, breaking the singleseason record for batting average. She finished with 44 hits in 91 at bats for a .484 average. That was tied for first in the PSAC. The 44 hits were tied for seventh in a season, and she led the Fighting Scots with 18 runs scored. She had five doubles, a triple and drove in 11 runs. She also proved very solid in the field with just four errors in 100 chances. Pullo’s speed and daring on the bases provided plenty of excitement. She finished with 18 stolen bases in 19 attempts, and if not for missing eight games late in the year with an injury she was on course to break the school record for stolen bases. As it is, the 18 steals are tied for fourth in a season. When it was all said and done, Pullo was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year. “Marissa is a fun kid to be around and coach,” Gierlak grinned. “She’s a hard worker. She causes people problems offensively and defensively. She’s very aggressive on the basepaths. She’s also a leader on the field.” Cassidy started 34 games as a freshman, hitting .310 with three homers and 18 RBIs. “Stephanie has one of the best bats I’ve been around,” beamed Gierlak. “She doesn’t let things bother her. She has a strong arm, which can sometimes get her in trouble. But she came up big in big games and she hits the ball hard every time. She’s a great kid to coach.” Unlike previous years, Gierlak has devel oped some depth in the infield. For starters, there’s Brittney Price and T’ana Abt. Both are versatile players who can play any infield posi tion. Price, a junior, was the starting third baseman as a freshman, hitting .241. She struggled with the bat as a sophomore, hitting .189, but half of her hits were for extra bases,

Edinboro University Softball 2011

with four doubles and three homers. Price also stole six bases. She saw most of her action in the outfield last year before filling in at shortstop when Pullo went down. “Brianna has a strong arm and is a good athlete,” related Gierlak. “She has to get more consistent with the bat. She hit well as a fresh man.” Abt is a raw player who Gierlak feels has outstanding potential. The sophomore stepped in late last year when VanDamia and Pullo were hurt and displayed some of that potential. Abt hit .229 in 35 at bats with four doubles and a triple. “T’ana has the ability to be as good as anyone we have,” Gierlak predicted. “She has to become more consistent with the glove and at bat. She’s raw, but she’s talented and strong, and very athletic.” Brenna Cosgrove made a solid impres sion on Gielak in the fall. The freshman from nearby McDowell High School can play short stop and second base. “I liked what I saw in the fall,” noted Gierlak. “She’s got a nice glove who needs to get stronger. Brenna’s a good athlete who runs well. As a hotter she’s a slap per.” Amber Peluso and Tara Townsend, the two seniors on the team, are also in reserve at third base. Peruso has seen limited action. In fact, in her lone at bat last year she hit a run scoring single. But Gierlak likes her attitude and hitting ability. Townsend joined the team a year ago after transferring from LaRoche. Like Peluso, she had a hit in her lone at bat last year. She’s battling a back injury and is in question this year.

the outfield. “Kari will pitch more this year,” admitted Gierlak. “She had a finger injury last fall and fell behind. She has good power and hits the ball well. I’d like to see her be a little bit more consistent with two strikes. She runs well and is wellconditioned. Kari is one of the top outfielders in the region.” After that, in Gierlak’s words there are a “barrage of others”. The most experienced is Carrie Hall, a junior who played in 22 games a year ago and hit .361 with five doubles and five stolen bases. Hall started 35 games as a freshman, hitting .221. While she can play all three outfield positions, she’ll likely end up in right field. “Carrie is a lefty who can slap the ball and puts the ball in play,” assessed Gierlak. “She runs well.” Junior Stacie Balkovic becomes a full time outfielder this year after previously see ing most of her time as a pitcher. She had four hits in 13 at bats for a .308 average a year ago. “Stacie is making a conscience effort to play in

Outfielders About the only sure thing in the outfield is Kari Falk, a highlyregarded pitching prospect a year ago who ended being even more valuable as the everyday centerfielder. Falk started all 37 games, hitting .330 with 13 RBIs. She displayed the ability to hit for extra bases, as well, with a teamhigh 11 doubles, two triples and four home runs. Gierlak is in a quandary in regards to Falk. He knows he’ll likely need to pitch her more this year, but admits that she is the leader in

Edinboro University Softball 2011

the outfield,” stated Gierlak. “She can play in left or right. She works very hard. If she hits, she’ll play.” Alex Gierlak joined the Boro program a year ago after starring as an infielder at nearby General McLane High School. Her father quickly found she’d be more valuable in the outfield, and she made strong contributions as a pinch runner and defensive player. Alex hit .250 in 28 at bats, starting 13 games. “Alex is batting lefthanded and learning how to slap,” related her father. “She can hit the ball, runs well, and she came through for us last year. She’s developing a little more arm strength. She had never played the outfield before.” Four newcomers will look for playing time. Amy Hedderick redshirted last year. Gierlak notes she still needs more work, but she has gotten stronger and plays good defense. He notes she is very aggressive on

Kari Falk came in with a huge high school resume’ as a pitcher but became even more valuable in center field.

the bases. He believes she has the ability to be an everyday player. Sarah Gustafson is another local product from Warren Area High School. She’s another player who can run and is a good bunter. Gierlak compares her to Cosgrove, as a young player who needs to get stronger but has a bright future. Gierlak feels Brianna Perkins might be the best athlete of the freshman class. An allstate infielder at BolivarRichburg(NY) High School, she moves to the outfield to take advantage of her speed and strong arm. Gierlak feels she can be a very good player as her bat develops. Leanne Rose rounds out the deep group of outfielders. A freshman from Edgewood(OH) High School, she is better as a hitter than a defender right now.

Pitchers With no proven starting pitcher, Gierlak will mix and match with a group of four sophomores. He does have pitchers with tal ent, just not a proven college pedigree. Amanda Shields turned in several strong outings down the stretch and had a strong fall season. Kari Falk was allstate pitcher in high school. However, Gierlak found she was even more valuable in center field and at the plate. Falk will see more action on the mound this year, but her ability to cover the gaps in cen ter, plus hit, may make it difficult to take her out of the field. Shields, a lefty, saw action in nine games, with three starts. She went 13 with a 2.88 ERA in 24 1/3 innings. When top starter Beth Mullins missed time with an injury late in the year Shields gained some valuable experience down the stretch. For instance, she came in a tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings against Mercyhurst, and gave up just one unearned run in 4 2/3 innings in the PSAC playoff loss to Bloomsburg. “Amanda has a chance to be good,” Gierlak pointed out. “She’s a lefty whose ball really moves. She had trouble controlling her movement last year. She did a nice job in spurts last year.” As a senior at Fort LeBoeuf High School Shields was an honorable mention AllState

Edinboro University Softball 2011

selection and the Region 4 Pitcher of the Year. Falk was an even more highlydecorated performer in high school. She led Riverside High School to backtoback WPIAL Class AA championships. She earned first team All State honors after going 182 with 12 shutouts and a 0.43 ERA. She appeared in just three games a year ago as a pitcher, and just one of those was in the north. But she displayed the ability to get good hitters out in that outing, giving up just one earned run and striking out five in six innings against Gannon. Falk was 10 with a 1.80 ERA, although she threw a total of 11 2/3 innings. “Kari won a lot of games as a pitcher in high school,” admitted Gierlak. “She hits the corners and is very consistent with her loca tion. She has long arms and legs and has a deceiving motion. She can strike out people. We kept her in the outfield last year. She will need to throw this year.” While Falk made the transition from pitcher to outfielder a year ago, Gierlak also successfully moved Brittney Mackey from catcher to pitcher. Mackey saw little action on the mound as a senior at Edgewood High School, but she was a mainstay for the Fighting Scots early in the year. Unfortunately, a thumb injury forced her sea son to come to an early end in early April. Mackey ended the year with a 22 record and a 4.50 ERA in seven games. She tossed shutouts against Fayetteville State and Lake Erie. In 23 1.3 innings she gave up 29 hits, walked eight and struck out 24. “Brittney can be very good,” comment ed Gierlak. “She throws a lot of different pitches. She’s becoming more of a pitcher, not just a thrower. When she’s ahead she makes you swing at bad pitches. She’s a very strong kid and throws hard. We’re working on her becoming smoother with her delivery.” Roxanne Herrington is another sopho more with strong high school credentials mak ing the transition to a college pitcher. She

appeared in just one game for a third of an inning. “Roxie can be a very good pitcher when she gets ahead,” noted Gierlak. “She has a great drop ball. She did well in the fall in cer tain situations. She can change speeds. She just needs to continue to work on her condi tioning.”
