Do you have a plan for debt elimination?

hen most people think about retirement planning, they think of building a retirement nest-egg through RRSPs and pension plans. While these are key pieces of the puzzle, it’s important not to forget about another important element of retirement planning – debt elimination. After all, the less you spend on interest payments, the more you can allocate to your retirement savings. A debt-elimination plan doesn’t have to be complicated. But you should have one or you’ll likely be in debt longer than you have to. There are a few simple strategies for getting out of debt sooner, such as: • Building extra debt payments into your budget. • Consolidating all of your debts at the lowest rate possible. • Using your income and savings to automatically reduce your debt (without giving up access to that money).

When you’re planning for retirement, don’t forget about the impact that your debt has on those plans. With a strategy for becoming debt-free sooner, you may even be able to retire earlier than expected. We would be happy to help you develop a debt-elimination strategy that complements your overall retirement savings strategy. Give us a call if you’d like to discuss how you can be debtfree sooner.

International Female Ride Day rolls into town May 5th

pring is fast approaching and that means its International Female Ride Day. Of course Jennifer and the gang would not want to disappoint!  May 5th, 2018 is set to be our biggest gathering yet. With over 170 ladies set to join and over 800 more interested, this could be almost over whelming. This will be the 4th year that Jennifer Hatch and friends, Jackie, Nancy and Jolene have put together a ride just for lady riders. We have had upwards of 255 ladies at one point, all riding in the same ride, and it was purely magical! This year’s festivities will be held from 11 am to 2 pm at the Fergus Arena. We will have a DJ, vendors, food trucks and more! Our group photo will be taken at 1:30pm (which we submit to International Female Ride Day, Contest-Winners in 2016) and kick stands up at 2 pm to do a group ride into Orangeville.  We have so much fun for this ride, it’s a true sisterhood between women, all with a common goal — the love of riding.  We will have so many ladies coming in from every which side of Ontario, some even venturing from the Northern US. Jackie, Nancy and Jolene organize all of these meeting places and arrange road captains for the rides in. Jennifer organizes everything here in Fergus, and the ride out to Orangeville.  Jenn knows this area well and often books a meandering tour of the area. However, this year it will be a straight line into Orangeville as the size of the group could just be too large to do a tour of the outback. So, calling all local lady riders, if you would like to join us or would like more information, feel free to reach out to Jennifer at anytime. We have a Facebook Page, International Lady Riders Day, or email Jennifer Hatch at or call 519-803-2653. Happy and Safe Riding in 2018!

Watch for the CW Women’s Expo

here is always something fun to do in our grand little town, and a lot of that has to do with the vibrant business community in our downtown areas. From hippity hopping to midnight shopping, your friends and neighbours behind the shops and services of Downtown Fergus do their utmost to make shopping local a delightful experience. Just because there is a big hole in the landscape where the St David Street Bridge once was, doesn’t mean that there’s a hole in the social or retail landscape! Drop by Sensational You on St Andrew Street East, and you’ll still find the Sensational service and products that you’ve come to expect. The pink and blue oasis is also a bit of a community hub – Mary and the gang can act as your personal shoppers by directing you to the other fine merchants and their splendid wares, and they can even help you plan your social calendar because they know about all the shows, exhibits and events that are going on in Centre Wellington. Indeed, chances are, if you are attending any of the great fundraisers that the many not for profits and service groups in the community hold all year long, you’ve had the opportunity to bid on a Sensational You gift certificate that Mary has donated to support all the worthy causes that take place all year long. Sensational You is even putting on a few events this spring! The CW Women’s Expo returns on Saturday March 10th from 11 am until 4 pm. It makes its debut at the more intimate

location of the Fergus Legion. Admission is still $5.00, but this time the proceeds benefit the Rural Woman’s Support Program. The Rural Women’s Support Program provides services to women and their children living in Wellington County who have been or are in an abusive relationship, or have experienced childhood sexual abuse/incest, recent or past sexual assault, harassment and/or stalking. In this era of “Me Too”, this is an important cause for social justice, and it perfectly underscores the message of the inspirational and entertaining vendors, speakers and exhibitors that will facilitate your empowering journey to physical, emotional and mental wellness. Also back by popular demand is The Fourth Annual Bro Show on Friday March 23rd! The location has changed to The Fergus Legion, but what hasn’t changed is the demure and blushing demeanor of our bashful models or the incredible creativity of their outfits. Tickets are $10, with a cash bar and auction table. Doors Open at 7, but the fun lasts all night. If past years are any indication, you will want to run to Cocoon Interiors, Joanie’s or Sensational You to pick up your advance tickets, because we know the night will sell out. Since all proceeds benefit Groves Foundation, you can feel good about supporting your community while enjoying a “Girl’s night Out” that is like no other! You can find out more about these Sensational events on our Facebook page, at or by calling 519.843.4852 – see you there!

After Tax Dollars for Incorporated Small Business Owners

t was good to see that last month’s Federal Budget confirmed that Finance and Mr. Morneau were taking a softer stance on the taxation of passive income from what they were threatening to do last July.

However due to the fine print there will be a tax increase for many individuals that were saving for retirement through their corporations, the details of which are too lengthy to cover in this space.   I do want to focus on the tax rate reduction that Mr. Morneau continues to highlight in his messaging about how they are helping incorporated small business owners.  There is no disputing that the tax rate on the first $500,000 of taxable income for a Canadian Controlled Private Corporation is being reduced by .5% for calendar 2018 and another full percentage point for 2019.

TAX TALK Ed Mitukiewicz To maintain integration the tax rate applied to dividends paid out of corporate after tax surplus business earnings, subject to the lower corporate rate, was in fact increased as of January 1, 2018 for every tax bracket. The bottom line is the small business owner taking his or her remuneration as dividends will see no benefit at all from the reduction, a fact you will not see promoted by Mr. Morneau or any other Finance official.

What is not well reported or highlighted at all is that when a corporate tax rate is reduced the personal tax rate on dividends coming out of the company have to go up to maintain the theory of integration. Integration is based on the concept that you should not pay any more or less tax flowing income through a corporation compared to earning the income directly as an individual.

Setting new records

ver the past couple of years, Realtors George Mochrie, Amanda Lirusso and Erica Voisin, known as Your Grand Team, have established themselves as the new leading force in the local real estate scene. While they are known for their different approach and a level of marketing not seen before in our area, it is their results that have raised the most eyebrows. New selling records have become commonplace for this Realtor team, including highest price sold over list price, highest selling price for a condo, and highest dollar per square foot selling price*. And although they are especially known for their accomplishments in the higher end of the market, they have successfully applied their same selling approach across all price points in the marketplace. According to Team Leader George, “It is the fact each one of the team has such a different personality and skill set that has made us so successful together.” “Of course,” he continues, “it is the level of service we offer to our clients that has resulted in our team quickly becoming a Realtor of choice in the area.”

- Erica, George and Amanda

“We truly enjoyed working with George and his team. We felt totally IN CHARGE and NEVER PRESSURED. They made GREAT SUGGESTIONS and left it up to us to decide when, what and how to proceed. Staging went well. Very SIMPLE, PRACTICAL and EFFECTIVE ideas. The pace was hectic from start to finish but we DID NOT FEEL RUSHED. It all happened very quickly and the results were more than we ever expected. WOW! George has a certain laid-back mannerism which works well. It reassures people and sets up a very stable environment in which to proceed. I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND George and his team to anyone interested in buying or selling a home.” - Alex N. With testimonials like this, it is not hard to see why more people are now choosing Your Grand Team for their real estate needs. From state-of-the-art online-based video marketing to full home staging services, Your Grand Team has redefined what you should expect from your Realtor.

And now working out of their own office with Red Brick Real Estate in Downtown Fergus, George, Amanda and Erica are ready to set even more records for their clients again in 2018 — and as usual, they strive to provide an exceptional level of service that buyers and sellers have come to expect from this dynamic Realtor team. Effluent filters are mandatory in Ontario

ave a cottage? Or maybe you live in a rural area or small community. You’ll have to deal with a septic system. Knowing how your septic system works is a must.

Think about this: all household wastewater exits your home through an underground pipe that leads to a buried septic tank. The waste flows to the first compartment of the tank where the heavy solids settle and the lighter materials like fats, oils and grease float to the top as scum. This scum is removed when the tank is pumped during regular maintenance. On newer systems, any remaining organic material is trapped on a screen called the effluent filter located at the outlet of the tank (after 2008, effluent filters became mandatory on all installations and upgrades in Ontario). The effluent filters in your septic tank always need to be regularly maintained. These filters are an inexpensive way to keep your weeping bed clean. However, sewage, paper products, greases, laundry soaps can suddenly fill up in the piping. When was the last time you had it checked? Septic emergencies are messy and costly. Remember the golden rule about septic tanks -- you can’t ignore them! A little bit of attention goes a long way. A 16-point inspection from Snorks goes even further. A comprehensive inspection and detailed report by Snorks means no unpleasant, septic-tank surprises for you. Call Kevin and Lisa Dolderman at Snorks - 519-837-3661.

The miracle of walking, and when it hurts...

id you know that your foot absorbs forces greater then twice your body weight when walking? Multiply this by four when you are running.

For these types of conditions and many others there are non-surgical solutions that will ease pain and make it easier for you to walk. Solutions that may surprise you in their simplicity and ease of application. The only thing touching the ground when you are walking is your feet, and that is the interface used to make the changes to help relieve pain and make you walk easier.

Your foot however does not do this job of shock absorption by itself. Your feet purposely deform (change shape) shortly after you strike your heel.
