he Byers family - Gerry, Krista and their 5 children live in Fergus and are the owners of I Love Chocolate! and I Love That Gift! They started their adoption journey November 2006 in Haiti where they helped out at the orphanage their children resided at. During that time, they started a couple of little work projects to give some Haitians sustainable employment. You can view their microprojects at Gerry and Krista now return once a year to Haiti to continue the work projects. They also have a few little programs in their store that they raise funds for the orphanage their children once resided at. To date they have raised over $20,000! Junior (Pierre Richard Junior) is 24 years old and was born in St. Marc, Haiti. He is the oldest of 6 children. His birth parents died when he was 18, leaving him with the responsibility of his 5 younger siblings. The Byers are privileged to be his youngest siblings’ forever family through adoption. The Byers have also helped provide the means for Junior’s schooling, food, clothing and shelter. Currently he is living in Port au Prince, Haiti. The Byers would like him to be

reunited with his siblings in Canada. The next chapter of the Byers’ life journey is that they have found a way for Junior to come to Canada through postsecondary education with the opportunity of applying for Canadian citizenship down the road. They need your help with this chapter. Because Junior is over 16, he can only stay in Canada as a student. The Byers family needs to raise over $20,000 in tuition fees and living expenses for Junior to get permission to go to school here in Canada. If enough people, groups, organizations, small businesses, and corporations contributed, the goal could be reached. Buehler Automotive Vehicle Tip What's that smell? An unusual odour that appears when you turn on your car’s A/C may indicate the presence of bacteria or mildew in the system. These smells usually originate from the evaporator core in your car’s a/c unit and may require an application of a neutralizer product in the HVAC unit. If your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter it also needs to be inspected for restriction and contamination. An annual inspection / service of your vehicles air conditioning system will ensure that it will operateproperly when the hot days arrive. Regular maintenance can save you money in the long run and guarantee you driving comfort in the hot months ahead.

Retirement party planned for Ron & Inez Wilkin

ver 60 years ago, Ron Wilkin started on the path that has led him to where he is today. At the age of 14, he started apprenticing to become a watchmaker and by the age of 17 he was working for Stewart Gold in Fergus. This job lasted 5 years when he began to work for the lower shop in the Beatty Bros Factory. Even though he worked after hours repairing watches, he never had any dreams of opening his own store. That all changed when he was laid-off from GSW. Ron was forced to make a very big decision. He took the entrepreneurial plunge when he opened his first store in Arthur in 1960. He moved the store to Harriston 3 and a half years later. It was 1967 when his wife Inez suggested they talk to Ernie Butler in

Fergus after hearing his store might be for sale. A deal was made and in 1970, Inez quit her full time teaching job in order to help run the business.

The store grew every year and it won awards including The Golden Nugget Award (Jeweller of the Year 1990 for Ontario) and the Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Award in 2001. These awards are testaments to the dedication and hard work Ron and

Inez have always believed in. Proud and committed members of the community, Ron and Inez sponsored many Sports Teams, Organizations, and Service Clubs throughout the years. After almost 45 years of business in Fergus, Ron and Inez have decided to enjoy a more leisurely style of living although it is not uncommon to find them dropping in to the store just to check up on things and to stay in tune with the many great and loyal customers they have come to know over the years. RETIREMENT PARTY! Mark it on your calendar! The staff & family at Ron Wilkin Jewellers in downtown Fergus are busily preparing for the upcoming Retirement Party in honour of Ron and Inez Wilkin to be held at the Fergus Legion on Sunday, June 3rd from 1 pm to 4 pm. Be sure to drop by and wish them well! Call Ron Wilkin Jewellers for more information at 519-843-1225. The store is located on St. Andrew Street in downtown Fergus.

I Can Hear So Much Better Now

eb Charette was frustrated with his hearing aids. He was experiencing poor sound quality and his hearing aids would cut out randomly making every-day conversation difficult. He decided to consult Brian Ward at Ward Hearing Centre. “Brian advised me to have them cleaned at least once every few months in his office,” says Web.. “Since then, my hearing aids are 100% better!” Thanks to Brian’s advice and expertise, Web’s hearing aids are functioning properly and he can now enjoy clear, reliable sound. “The difference between having my hearing aids cleaned regularly by Brian and not having that done is unbelievable,” Web says. During your complementary hearing aid cleaning appointment, Brian will thoroughly check your hearing aid’s

functionality to ensure everything is working properly. With the help of specialized tools and machines, he will examine your ear canals with the help of his video-otoscope to check for excessive wax build-up. This is displayed on a large TV screen (pictured) that both you and Brian are able to see. Brian can

properly remove wax and moisture from your hearing aid and ear canal to improve your ability to hear & prevent future wax issues. It’s this combination of the latest hearing aid technology and high-quality products, along with friendly small-town service, that gives Ward Hearing Centre an edge. May is Better Hearing & Speech Month! Be sure to drop by and see Brian for friendly, knowledgeable and personalized service in a calm, unhurried atmosphere. For more information, call (519) 8434327. Can Homeopathy help Allergies?

n most cases - yes! Even in cases where there is a strong family history of allergies, homeopathy can decrease the intensity and frequency of symptoms and minimize discomfort in acute outbreaks. In many cases, especially when treating children, the immune system can be returned to complete health. Allergies primarily affect the skin, the respiratory system or the digestive system. The immune response may be rashes, hives, eczema, hayfever, asthma, vomiting, diarrhea or many worrisome Marg Gollinger, other symptoms. An DSHM, BMath allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to an external factor known as an allergen, such as pollen, dust, perfume, dander, or even certain foods. Many sufferers cope by simply avoiding the allergen. But that can severely restrict one’s freedom. It’s impossible for hayfever sufferers to restrict their movements to avoid pollens completely. In the case of children with a peanut allergy, which is equally difficult to avoid, the immune system is responding inappropriately to a common, non-toxic food. This is an indication that the immune system needs to be re-aligned. So avoiding the allergen isn’t enough. The immune system is malfunctioning and needs help. Homeopathy can help with treatment of the acute symptoms, but it can work much more deeply to enhance the functioning of the immune system in general. This requires constitutional work through a professional homeopath. And, in general, it will often take a number of years to improve or restore health. Detoxing is also helpful when treating allergies. Gemmotherapy remedies (made from embryonic plant growth) are well known for tissue regeneration. Gemmotherapy has the potential to go deep down to the cellular level to clean up and clear away any toxic accumulations that have a strangle-hold on the cells. Rosemarinus (Rosemary) is a good place to start for detoxing the liver and gallbladder. Ribes-nigrum (Black Current) is great for allergies since it also supports the immune system and acts as an anti-inflammatory (much like a steroid). Anyone suffering from allergies would also benefit from taking Vitamin C to

bowel tolerance. It’s also important to maintain a slightly alkaline level in the body by eating a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits, and by avoiding meats, sugars and processed foods. A number of “short-cut” remedies include Urtica-urens (Stinging Nettle) well known for treating hives, and Sabadilla which is a great hayfever remedy. But for deep, long-lasting help seek professional advice. For an appointment with me call 519-

846-5574 or for information see www. If you have a group that’s looking for a speaker, I’m happy to speak about homeopathy and healthy living - no charge! Come to the Victoria Park Seniors Centre on Friday May 11 at 10:30 am for an Introduction to Homeopathy - and learn how to make a remedy from scratch!! The information provided in this article is for education purposes only and does not replace professional medical advice.

Why is my water cloudy?

ccording to Greg Montgomery from Watermatters in Fergus, there are a number of natural, man-made factors that contribute to cloudy tap water. No one likes to see murky water in a glass they’re about to drink, or worse yet, in a glass they’re about to serve to a guest. This is why Greg recommends Kinetico’s Whole Home Water Treatment products so that your family can enjoy clean, clear drinking water all over again. “Once you experience life hydrated by a Kinetico Whole Home System, you’ll appreciate the value of clean, soft water,” says Greg.

10 May 2012

Shade Plus offers a full line of retractable awnings from Solidux at very competitive prices. With a 10-year warranty, their awnings are available in a wide range of fabrics by Sunbrella. Customers have the option of a motorized awning allowing you to use it with a switch or remote.

Why does my water have funny tastes or odours? Greg says it depends on where your water comes from. In its natural state, water is colourless, tasteless and odourless—and you should expect nothing less from the water in your home. Common chemicals used in water treatment, natural minerals and bacteria, or man-made contamination may be acting behind the scenes to give your water funny tastes or odours, such as a “rotten egg” smell or a musty, earthy or metallic taste. A Kinetico system can completely remove the sources of these annoyances so your water is clean, fresh and enjoyable.

K5 Drinking Water Station Kinetico’s K5 drinking water system uses multiple stages of filtration, i n c l u d i n g reverse osmosis technology, to remove just about everything from your water that isn’t water. GREG The K5 is the MONTGOMERY most advanced drinking water system available, with unparalleled features and benefits. Fitness: How Chiropractic Can Help You

fficiency. It is something we all look for in home appliances or cars. How much energy will this thing take to run? Does the system have any weaknesses? If it’s a used car, we want to know if the car had its oil changed regularly and if the parts have been properly cared for. We know that when one thing is imbalanced, the whole system becomes less effective. The truth is, chiropractic care can play a significant role in overall “fitness.” When all systems are fully supported and functioning properly, we run, work, and play better. Though it can be difficult to define, physical fitness refers to a state of overall health that includes the ability to perform a range of activities, from a hard workout to working comfortably at a desk, with ease and efficiency. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, there are four types of fitness that contribute to complete health: muscular fitness, which includes muscle strength and endurance; flexibility, which includes muscle/tendon elasticity and range of motion; cardio-respiratory fitness, which includes the heart, lungs, and blood vessels; and body composition, or the percentage of body fat to nonfat tissues (bones, organs, etc.). Because no one system functions on it’s own, the fitness of each affects all the others. While it’s important to get adequate exercise, eat right, and treat our bodies kindly to maximize health in all of the above categories, chiropractic care can be a big step to improving overall fitness. Because chiropractic works toward balancing the body’s systems—bones, muscles, nerves, and organs—through proper posture and alignment, chiropractic care allows the whole body to perform at its best, increasing energy as it decreases the stress and fatigue

that can result from improper alignment. In fact, icons of fitness such as Tiger Woods and Superbowl MVP Joe Montana have and continue to use chiropractic care to maintain peak physical performance; and the trend is catching on among a number of professional athletes and sports teams. The U.S. teams for the 2002 Winter Olympics were the first to employ an official Doctor of Chiropractic, and they had one of the best showings ever. Coincidence? After a recent skiing accident, Arnold Schwarzenegger remarked, “I had one of those miracle moments when you call a chiropractor, they care for you and then days later you ski again like a champion on moguls.” Though it may feel like a miracle, the principle of chiropractic is simple. When the body is well aligned, muscles, joints, and ligaments function together with greater ease. Internal organs aren’t hindered— the lungs and heart are better able to do their jobs. Perhaps even more importantly, chiropractic care helps prevent injuries that can result from over stressing a particular part of the body that may be compensating for those parts that aren’t functioning as well. Chiropractic Can Help Your Body Run More Efficiently Everyone knows that it is important to exercise regularly and eat right to take care of our bodies. But what if you are in too much pain to be able to exercise comfortably or safely? What if your range of motion is

limited by stiffness? By eliminating the headaches, muscle tightness, low back pain, and nerve interference (or subluxations) that result from misalignment, chiropractic helps the body become less limited in the types of and amount of movement it can perform well. So how would you rate your physical fitness? Learn how chiropractic care can help you with your goals. Call 519-8431500 today.

s many Centre Wellington residents have found out, Paul Coombe from the Fergus-Elora Driving School is passionate about driver training. That’s evident in the success rate of students like Tori Patteson who have on average, a 95 per cent road-test success rate after taking lessons with Paul. Aquamaster Water Softener Rated #1 by Region of Waterloo

ver the past few months the Region of Waterloo and the City of Guelph have run tests on water softeners to determine their efficiency. Any company wishing to have their softener tested was to supply the softener and the hookup at the Region of Waterloo test facility at the William street pumping station in Waterloo. The water supply to the units were metered as was the drain line to determine how much water was being softened as well as how much was being dumped down the drain during the regeneration cycle. The salt tanks were also set on scales to determine the amount of salt that was used during the regeneration

over a period of time. The Aquamaster 900 unit was tested along with many of the top name brand models. At the end of testing the Aquamaster 900 unit was rated #1 as far as cost of operation per year. All of

oving to Fergus from Mount Forest in 2010 was the best thing we ever did. We love Fergus/Elora and we love having our business here. We’ve cut our mileage way down, we’re closer to family and we’re making many new friends here. Ron has been in the mortgage, housing and real estate related business his whole life and he has a special affection for ‘first time buyers’. Chronic pain? We can help….

any of us know of people who have suffered trauma (sprains, fractures, muscles tears) and who have been treated with acupuncture. In fact, acupuncture for relief of pain is probably one of the most widely accepted uses of this “alternative” therapy. Many patients see dramatic relief from pain, inflammation and swelling after just one treatment. Others, who have more chronic, long term conditions, report an improvement in every day quality of life. Results such as reduced pain, reduced need to take medications for pain, increased mobility, better ability to rest, improved range of motion, improved ability to regain strength and improved endurance are just a few of the things noted by acupuncture patients.

Want to hear something weird? We see the same results in veterinary patients! Animals respond in much the same way. Let us look

at an example. Arthritic changes often occur in our pets. We see dogs unwilling to climb stairs, or just slow to stand from laying down. Cats may not jump up on things the way they KAYTE ARMSTRONG used to. These from the Arthur changes may be due to congenital Vet Clinic problems like poorly aligned hips (as in hip dysplasia) or knee issues (cruciate ligament damage, even when repaired surgically, often leads to chronic arthritic changes). While veterinary medicine has come a long way in our ability to treat and manage arthritis, not all dogs need pharmaceuticals all the time. Not all dogs can take medications due to preexisting conditions like kidney or liver disease, or they may just not tolerate the meds (vomiting and diarrhea are possible signs of intolerance). Or what about the dog that no longer responds to medications? What about the dog with nerve damage who cannot move his feet due to disc disease? What about the patient who has been deemed “beyond our ability to help”?

Acupuncture offers an option. In the arthritic patient, it can improve mobility and provide pain relief. Many dogs see relief after one or two treatments. They can then be maintained with treatments on a monthly basis (sometimes less often). More advanced cases may benefit from more frequent “tune ups”, but the long term effects equate to less medications, fewer risks of side effects and increased quality of life. As for the “hopeless” cases, we can improve quality of life and reduce pain. In some cases, mobility can be returned to limbs that are either too weak, or that do not have sufficient nerve impulses stimulating them. Is acupuncture going to be able to fix everything? No. But it can offer another option, or more hope to the seemingly hopeless cases. It does not replace our regular veterinary approach of diagnosing the problem, and making surgical or medicinal recommendations. It gives us another tool we can integrate with all of our best recommendations. It gives us one more thing that we can try. And it gives our patients another opportunity to enjoy life. If you have questions about how acupuncture may help your pet, feel free to call the Arthur Veterinary Clinic at 519-848-2536. Dr. Kayte Armstrong will be happy to discuss this with you. We are now offering evening appointments every Thursday.

Canada Revenue Shows No Mercy for Late Filers and Repeat Offenders

ndividuals who report any type of selfemployed income have an extended filing deadline of June 15th. If that does not apply to you or your spouse and you have not filed your 2011 tax return then you are late and potentially into penalties. In all cases  if  you owe income tax then compound daily interest (currently at 5%) started being applied as of May 1st.  The penalty for filing late is an automatic 5% of the taxes owing at the filing deadline plus another 1% per complete month after the filing deadline (to a maximum of 12 months) that the return remains outstanding, so the maximum penalty is 17%.   Interest will be charged not only on the taxes owing but also on the penalty amount until it is paid.  The penalties and interest are charged on “taxes owing” at the filing deadline so if you are in a refund position then you will be charged nothing for actually filing after the deadline. If you file your 2011 tax return late and any one of 2008, 2009 and 2010 were also late then the penalty amounts above

2011, for whatever reason, you again fail to report an income amount but this time its $10,000. The penalty is an automatic 10% Federal and another 10% Provincial (if they choose to apply that) not on the tax owing but on the income itself.  So in my example the penalty would be up to $2000 even if no tax was owing  had the income been included in the filing.  It is possible to get this penalty waived if you took steps to report the income once you discovered your error.  So if you find something was not reported after you have filed you should seriously consider filing an adjustment request to add the income to your tax return.

are doubled so you could get hit with a maximum penalty of 34%. Again this is only charged on taxes owing so if late filing cannot be avoided then at the very least a payment of estimated tax owing should be made. A repeated failure to report income can result in even higher penalties.  For example let’s say at some point in the three years before 2011 you missed an income amount such as a T5 or small * Personal and Corporate Tax Planning T4 and Canada * Estate and Succession Planning Revenue sent * Retirement Planning you an arbitrary assessment which CONTACT: Ed Mitukiewicz COLLINS BARROW was not much so Tax Partner Chartered Acountants 0342 Gerrie Road, Elora, Ontario N0B 1S0 Collins Barrow Phone (519)846-5315 you paid it and Email: 846-5315 forgot about it.  In

tatistics show every three minutes a Canadian is diagnosed with cancer. I guess last summer my family had a pretty tough nine minutes. I had three members of my family diagnosed with cancer. I think it would be safe to say that we all know somebody who has been diagnosed with cancer, suffered a heart attack or a stroke. In fact, we could probably name ten people. Do you think these people wanted this to happen? Were they able to prepare for it? Would they have recovered quicker if they received tax-free money to help them with their daily expenses or seek immediate treatment elsewhere rather than be on a waiting list? Do you think having the financial resources to fund alternative therapies

Why a refurbished computer is better

roy Witter, owner of Reality Bytes Computer Stores in Fergus and Elmira, says what separates his stores from his big-box competitors is service and quality. “I’m not going to get into a price war with them because they don’t honour service like we do,” says Troy. When you buy a computer from Reality Bytes, you buy based on the trust of the small community and the experience of the store owner and his staff. When you trust your business with Troy, who has over 20 years experience as a computer technician, you’re dealing with someone who knows computers inside and out. In a small town, you can’t sell junk, make money and expect to keep the confidence of your customers. Troy purchases computers off-lease from large corporations, then brings them to his facility for extensive testing before he offers them for sale at his stores.

“I’ve found the corporate models to be far more stable to hardware failure,” says Troy. “These computers are meant to withstand the day-to-day grind of a corporate office setting. I feel these are built better for the simple fact that most corporate models hold a 3-yearstandard warranty from the factory or they are being leased for a period of 3-5 years. Could you imagine the panic if the quality wasn’t good enough to withstand the term of the

lease?” With this in mind, it’s easy to understand that the off lease computers that they recycle can be as good, if not better, then a new machine that hasn’t been put through any type of stress. “We fix what we sell and often have the parts in stock so our service is fast, efficient and reliable,” says Troy. Visit Reality Bytes in Fergus and speak to one of their technicians for more information. They’re located at 920 St. David St. N. Centre Wellington Beautification Award Winner!

he side yard of Ecclestone Financial was looking very tired and with Centre Wellington coming up with a new sign bylaw, it was time to spruce the yard up! Ken Burns, from Burns Excavating, drew up plans and started to prepare the site for us. First off, the water in and water out lines were in poor shape - 6 feet below the material was removed and new lines were installed. While we were at it, we had to repoint the old stone work with the help of Absolute Masonry. Once that was completed, LS Plumbing did the water works. The site was then levelled, backfilled and prepared for the 135,000 pounds of rock that would make up the curb, with the largest rock weighing over 6,000 pounds! Each rock was hand placed (using a hugh excavator) to give the side yard a symmetrical look. Once completed, the

top soil was placed between the house and the rock wall. Yard Weasels next completed a concrete pour over the existing front porch to lessen the step height and then they went on to complete the interlocking bricks for the walkway. Flowers, shrubs and tall grass were planted in the site and then given time to grow. They have been moved around to fit best. It looks like we will always

be moving material! Keltech Signs installed the new roadside sign to comply with the new sign by law and now at least once a month the community receives a new message to comment on. Our yard project, has been well received by the community and wildlife. In fact, last spring (2011) Mildred a Mallard Duck came and nested in the long grass and hatched a few eggs, go figure, you build it they will come! Those who were involved in this project were Craig Cianfagna fence and stone removal, Ken Burns and his team, LS Plumbing, Absolute Masonry, Yard Weasels, Donna Lehman - Master Gardener, Chris Cianfagna and myself, doer’s of the rest! Thank you to all! We very much appreciate the Beautification Award from the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce‌

Last year’s winner, Angela Campbell, was able to lose the largest percentage of original body weight after measurements were recorded to break a tie. THIS YEAR’S COMPETITION This year there are three entry levels, to make this competition even more accessible! There will be... 1) A competition registry, a group nutrition seminar, and a personalized nutrition plan developed by Optimum Integrative Health Centre’s Michael Long, ND, as well as access to our facility and online training software. 2) The above plus 6 personal training

Pain during normal walking and Pedorthic treatment

ne of the best ways to stay in shape and keep the weight off during the spring and summer is going for an evening walk. If ten to twenty minutes into the walk, pain is experienced in the lower limb we may head right back home and cut the walk short. We may experience foot pain in the heel (fasciitis) or ball of the foot, shin splints, knee pain or hip pain.

bone structure of the lower limb. After heel strike a complex series of movements occur to allow us to walk. If pain occurs anywhere along the “closed kinetic chain” of the body, the compensation in walking affects every other part along that chain. For example, a foot movement called pronation is associated with internal rotation of the leg. Excessive pronation may cause foot, leg, knee or hip pain due to changes in bone position and soft tissue strain. Orthotic foot support and footwear are designed to control pronation. Custom-made prescription orthoses

and footwear are available at Fit toWalk at 135 St. David St S. at “The Olde Livery”. Clinical evaluation, casting, manufacturing and fittings are all performed at our on-site lab. Call Bob Witte, your local Certified Pedorthist at 843-7979 for flexible appointment hours and a no-obligation consultation. Services are recognized by major insurance providers.
