Dubai Essentials The second largest of the seven United Arab Emirates, Dubai is located on the southern shore of the Arabian Gulf. Dubai is a desert city with very high temperatures in the summer. Please read through this section in order to enjoy a safe and comfortable stay.

Medical Care

Dubai has many modern and well-equipped medical centres. Dubai Hospital is one of the best health institutions in the Middle East, and is situated on Sheikh Rashid Road in the heart of Dubai. Dubai Emergency Number: 999.

Dubai is in the Gulf Standard Time (GST) zone and is GMT +4.

Dubai has a sub-tropical, arid climate. August in Dubai is very hot, humid and dry. Temperatures range from a low of about 30°C to a high of 48°C.

Lightweight summer clothing is recommended for most of the year. Dubai has a very relaxed dress code, however most restaurants require smart casual with no open-toed shoes. Care should be taken not to give offence by wearing clothing that could be considered too provocative or revealing. A brimmed hat and sunglasses of good quality are advised to protect yourself when in direct sunlight.

The official language is Arabic, but English is widely spoken and understood. Both languages are commonly used in commerce and trade.

Due to the high temperatures in Dubai, it’s important to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Tap water is quite safe to drink, but visitors usually prefer bottled water.

Dubai Laws

Dubai is a very liberal city, however it pays to remember that you are visiting an Islamic country. It would be wise not to take these laws lightly as you could face fines or imprisonment if someone takes offence and reports you.

In most public areas, shorts and skirts should be of appropriate length. This means that knees and shoulders should be covered. Clothing should not indecently expose

34 – Asia Oriflame Gold Conference 2013

parts of the body, be transparent, or display obscene or offensive pictures and slogans. If you are deemed to be inappropriately dressed in a shopping mall you may be requested to leave.

Alcohol is available in the hotel’s restaurants and bars. However, restaurants outside the hotel are not permitted to serve alcoholic beverages. Public intoxication is subject to fines or imprisonment. Smoking is prohibited in public buildings, malls and shops. Smoking outside designated areas is subject to fines.

Displays of affection in public places do not sit well with the local culture. Holding hands for a married couple is tolerated, but kissing and petting are considered as offensive to public decency. Public displays of affection are liable to be punished by a warning or fine and in some cases may lead to imprisonment or deportation.

Tourist photography is allowed, but it is considered offensive to photograph Muslim women and families. It is also a good idea to ask before photographing men. Photographs of government and military buildings should not be taken.

Swearing, profanities, and all kinds of vulgar language are strictly forbidden in Dubai. All types of aggressive or offensive gestures are considered offensive and liable to fines or imprisonment.

Drugs are forbidden in the strictest terms. If you are caught in possession you could be sent to prison for up to seven years and then deported. Anyone caught smuggling drugs into Dubai are looking at a possible life sentence.

Getting Around Dubai offers visitors traditional Arabic hospitality together with an unparalleled service industry. The excellent infrastructure allows for easy and affordable transport around the city.

Business Hours

The weekend has traditionally been Thursday afternoon and Friday, although some organisations now close on Friday and Saturday, working through Thursday afternoon instead. Shop hours are similar in their opening times, but most shops remain open until 21.00–22.00HRS. Department stores, souqs and many eateries remain open on a Friday, apart from prayer times (between 11.30 and 13.30), while larger shops re-open on Friday afternoon around 16.00–17.00.

36 – Asia Oriflame Gold Conference 2013

The monetary unit is the dirham (DHS or AED) which is divided into 100 fils. The dirham is linked to the Special Drawing Right of the International Monetary Fund. It has been held constant against the US dollar since the end of 1980 at a mid-rate of approximately US $1.00 = Dh 3.67.

ATMs or ‘cash points’ are very common in Dubai and can be found throughout the city and inside hotels.

There is no rule that says you must tip in Dubai, however it is deemed good practice by most. Restaurants and bars often include a service charge of between 10%-15%. It is common to tip taxi drivers by rounding up to the nearest AED 5.

Despite all the modern modes of transport, taxis are still the most popular and convenient way to get around Dubai. The beige-coloured Dubai cab can be spotted almost everywhere. There is a minimum spend in each cab of 10 dirhams. Remember, paying with small notes or exact change is highly appreciated. Most taxi drivers are friends and speak enough English to get you where you want.

Credit Cards

All major credit cards and debit cards (American Express, Diners Club, Visa, MasterCard, etc.) are widely accepted in most hotels and larger stores. Most Souqs accept only cash, while a few accept credit cards too.

Buses are rarely used by tourists and it is advised to travel around the city by taxi or metro. However, for a good hop on – hop off type of tour, try the Big Bus Company. It runs two routes – the blue route through Jumeirah and the red route through the older parts of Dubai. One ticket costs AED 175 and covers 24 hours of riding.

The world’s longest and most advanced driverless metro system. Opened in 2009, the Dubai Metro spans an astounding 75 km, operates 43 stations. The metro travels at an average speed of 45 km per hour and serves around 1.2 million passengers every day. Tickets range from 2 dirham to 6.50 dirhams and can be bought at any station.
