BGETE ORS 3118 Margaret Oaks Lane Orlando, FL 32806 norris.bridgette@gmail.com 407 - 403 - 2548 MAY 25, 2012 Susan Martucci Owner The Dancer’s Pointe 105 Gatlin Avenue Orlando, FL 32806 Dear Mrs. Martucci, Perhaps the dance studio is looking to hire an instructor that can connect with the young dancers taking ballet classes for the first time. If this is the case, then please review my resume and consider myself for a teaching position at the studio. Being involved in dance since the age of four has taught me ways to memorize positions and choreography, as well as manage stess of performances. With a background of helping in the Ballet and Tap combo class for 4 and 5-year-olds, I am able to control the children and assist them through first dance class while managing to keep it enjoyable. Creating analogies to help the children memorize the basic ballet positions to playing Disney music during stretching, I plan to make the class stress free and fun. Your example as a teacher has given me ideas to excute my plans. Additional information is included in the accompanying resume. I would appreciate the oppurtunity for an interview at your convenience. Thank you for your consideration. Respectfully,

Bridgette Norris Enclosed: resume

personal essay

At the end of my freshman year, I signed up to take Journalism I. I had heard positive feedback about the course and always enjoyed writing, so I figured why not. My older sister, Lauren, had friends who had been involved in journalism classes, more specifically yearbook, during their high school years. My sister even mentioned having regrets about not getting involved. Hearing this encouraged me to sign up for the class and motivated me to learn about the subject. Journalism is more than a class to me, it is an important part of my life and something I value. Although I have always done decent or average in school, I had never had a subject or sport I excelled in, until I started writing. In addition, I have constantly had to follow in my sister’s footsteps throughout my life. We are similar in several ways, but I always came second in everything we have done. Fortunately journalism was the one thing I had that she did not. Therefore, even though she is better at basketball and excelled in academics, I know I can say I am a better writer than she was when she was my age, possibly even better than she is now. Knowing how much I love to write makes not applying for staff next year extremely difficult for me. Regardless of how much I love to write and read, newspaper made me lose the love for it. I fully understand that no one’s first draft is perfect, but I could not handle the corrections that needed to be made after turning in a story. Seeing all of the marks and edits made me feel like I was a horrible writer and question why I was even writing the story. I would think to myself, maybe someone else should just write the story because mine was nowhere near good enough. While the corrections are useful to make my story better and also make me a better writer, I did not handle the criticism well. After a few deadlines, I adjusted to it. However it still made me cringe every time I found a graded story in my box. Although some parts of journalism come natural to me, there are other aspects that are extremely difficult for me. More specifically, photography and designing puts me out of my comfort zone. Designing pages and secondary coverage is extremely frustrating to me. I have trouble staying within the style, keeping the page clean but being creative too. I felt as if my pages were basic, but not boring. I would have liked to have been able to spend more time on my designs though. While I mention I would have liked to spend more time on my page designs, I do feel like I contributed to the staff in other ways, such as time and effort. I took my responsibilities as a member of the staff seriously and remained dedicated throughout the deadlines. In order to remain dedicated, I had to make sacrifices and remind myself that quality of work is important. Even though I was not able to contribute any outstanding design ideas, I believe I contributed characteristics of a good staff member and entertaining stories to not only the paper but the website too. My layouts may not have been impressive compared to other students or staff members but what matters most to me is that I did try my best and ended up being proud of my work.

self analysis essay

This year I have become aware of my poor time management skills. In a way, I truly believe I over committed myself. I used to be capable of meeting deadlines and managing my time appropriately until I began having other priorities. Unfortunately aside from school and newspaper, I participated in other activities that demanded the equivalent amount of time, responsibility, and effort as newspaper. At times, I did not perform to the best of my ability and I couldn’t help but question the quality of my work. When I blew off peer edits, I couldn’t help but feel guilty. The worst feeling was when I thought I let Mrs. Burke down. After all the time and green pens she has sacrificed, it nearly killed me knowing I would give anything less than my best effort. But trying my best continued to get more difficult. After spending the day at school, going to basketball practice for about two hours or work, then dance for a few hours, I had difficulty maintaining my priorities. Often times, I feel as though newspaper was pushed off to the side and came close to last. It was always disappointing to feel like I had to turn in something I was not proud of. Some of the staffers said it was always easier to get the hard work done first and write the peer edit like it is your final draft, I wish I would have listened and done that for each deadline. Unfortunately I did not start doing that until after basketball season had ended. Although for each extracurricular activity, I had to make sacrifices. It was challenging when I would try to decide which activity to be the most dedicated too. I would have to choose between going to practice or staying for a workday. Another aspect that made choosing which priority even more difficult was that newspaper is a class and my grade is affected by my work. After six deadlines, I can honestly say I feel worn out with the class and club. I tried to my best to stay motivated and finish the year as strong as I started, but I have had difficulty doing so. Regardless, I am proud of how much I have learned throughout the year. I truly feel I have improved as a writer, staff member, team member, and student.

reflection one

After dreading writing feature stories on seniors, I realized the two stories were my favorite I have wrote all year. At first, there was confusion on what the stories were supposed to be on and what I was actually writing about. But it turned out, the articles told two stories of seniors who had big plans. Both stories were short and sweet. My purpose in writing these was to share a story about two students who should be recognized for their hard work and plans for the future. I wanted the stories to differ from each other. The idea was to share a story about a girl going to college and playing softball while another student is taking a different path, postponing college and joining the navy. Minor changes were made from the peer edit to the final draft but no major changes. I found the page easy to design and the stories easy to write. I also think adding the secondary coverage with seniors who signed to college for sports was a nice extra touch to the page. Not every senior athlete could have a story written to recognize them, but at least they were mentioned. In order to complete the page, I had to research information about enlisting in the navy. It was hard to understand the interview answers I was given when I was not aware of the requirements or terminology. Besides research, I had to interview the senior navy bound student several times before I felt the story was complete, and text him in order to find a picture in his uniform. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I spoke with his NJROTC teachers about his future career and performance in class. As for the second story, I spoke with the softball player just once and got a long interview. I spoke with her teammates too. Although I would have liked to take the picture of her playing softball, or used a picture of her when she was younger and playing, I was satisfied with the published photo. The page was relatively easy for me. That is part of the reason why I enjoy it. It shows that journalism can be easy if you make it that way. When you put in the extra effort, like try on the peer edit and continue to interview until all of your questions have been clearly answered.

Procrastination was my biggest fault with the full back page of tattoos. I waited to ask for pictures of student’s tattoos and failed to ask for help designing when I needed it. As a result of my procrastination, the story was choppy and did not add up to my expectations. Another disappointing part of the page was the photography. I didn’t take all of the pictures used on the page. Several other staff members had to step up and help because of my procrastination. I waited to get start on the page and avoided it at first because I dreaded the page and story. I was unsure of an angle to take on the story. Aside from the story, I had difficulty with other aspects of the page too. Originally I planned to use a student and his brother with similar tattoos in the story and get photos of the tattoo. The brothers refused to let me take a picture of it though. When I finally got one brother to agree, he was absent on the day I went to get the picture and the paper was supposed to go to press the same day. So as other staffers are getting ready to send the paper to press and finalize the master, I was rushing to find a student with a tattoo so I could final my story. I can not describe how guilty I felt about waiting to get started on the page. I knew I was letting the staff down. Various staff members, who had already finished their pages for the deadline, went to photograph students with tattoos for me. This not only proved the staff members were team members but it proved I needed to learn a lesson from procrastinating. Compared to the first draft, the page layout and story completely changed. I like the design of the layout, but I still do not feel the story is good enough. The pictures are definitely not good enough either. Students could not tell where the tattoos were from the picture and even though the captions explain that, the photos could be improved. There is no doubt if I had the chance to go back and do it over, I would.

This picture was never published, however it is a favorite of mine. It looks appealing to a viewer because it tells a story of something that occurred in a game. The players are between the two referees. One of the referees is signalling a penalty to the crowd. The picture displays the players in a clump, watching the referee. The picture also shows good photo composition. There is a center of visual interest and rule of thirds. football 9-09_norris114

The picture fills the frame. Even though the photo was never published, it is one of my favorites. I like how it has a humanistic element to it. Two football players are helping one another out on the field. It appears as if the one on the right is giving a pep talk and holding the helmet of the other player. football 9-09_norris

reflection four

Putting forth extra hours and wanting to produce successful work made me an adequate staffer this year, not only for hi-lights but for hilights.org as well. I always gave my best effort, whether it was a peer edit or a final copy. Besides attempting to produce work that was worth reading, I strived to attract readers. As for the website, I would tweet and link the website onto Facebook and Twitter. For the newspaper, I would tell my friends to read the paper and give information on when it was coming out. The second half of the year, I decided to get points for mass media by covering flag football. I attended, tweeted, and wrote summaries of the games. Involving myself in the games increased my knowledge of the sport and how to write about sports, in general. I had fun writing about the games. It was especially helpful that the team was undefeated. Unfortunately, there were deadlines I did not make throughout the year. Not only did I focus on my work, I tried to offer help when others needed it too, especially on the last deadline. On deadline six, there were several days when I would stay after school to ensure perfection and completeness in my work. For example, when my shift at my job was cancelled, I drove by the school and stopped to help finalize the senior issue. I had spotted Karen’s car and assumed the paper had not been finished yet. It was the day the paper was supposed to be sent to press. Other minor ways I helped the other staff members was getting the volleyball coach’s number and interviewing the basketball coach. In some ways, I hope the small ways I helped the staff contributed to big ways. I also hope the staff members thought I was a positive person, willing to help and step up when needed.

REFLECTION FIVE

After six deadlines, I feel burned out. Newspaper was more work than I thought it would be. I do not think I was prepared enough, which is only because I did not know what to expect. I must mention that is no one’s fault. I faced hardships this year of feeling overwhelmed and like something was constantly going wrong. In the end, things always fell into place though, usually with help from Mrs. Burke and Karen. The most important lesson I learned was to remain positive. Things will work out and the paper will always get completed. If I was on staff next year, there is a lot of things I would do differently. The main part is I would continue to remind myself to do my best to keep stress at a minimum. Applying the lessons I have learned this year would make being on staff next year a lot easier. Next year I would focus on enjoying my work as much as I focus on completing it. I also would have fewer priorities so I could attend the newspaper bonding events, like restaurant reviews and holiday party. I would make a commitment to spend more time on my work from the start of a deadline. Personally, I think spending twenty minutes working on newspaper items before and after school makes a huge difference and adds up. Although I will not be on staff next year, I will continue to apply the lessons I learned from newspaper.

reflection six

My greatest weakness in relation to the publication is making deadline for mass media. Fortunately in the second half of the year, I improved tremendously though. I was able to post several pieces on the website once I was determined to start working harder in mass media. Not only did I improve at making deadline in mass media, but I start writing about a variety of different topics. I covered sports events, entertaining reviews and a news story. Another weakness I had in the first half of the year was lacking story ideas and not being able to find an interesting angle when writing a story. Although I could have improved more, I think I did improve slightly. For example I suggested a feature story on students who attend dance at a studio and for the school team. This idea was used as a foundation for a story published in the newspaper. Regardless if my improvements are visible for other people to see, I know that I have improved this year, and more specifically during the second half of the year. My improvements are not only because of the effort and time I put in, but because of the staff too.

reflection seven

I want this story to represent me because it is a story I am proud to have written. It is a short feature story, yet filled with emotion. The piece tells a story about a sport that is a bonding experience for a family and a way for them to connect with one another. They value not only the sport, but the moments of joy they have received from participating in it, throughout the generations. N13. General Feature Family continues football tradition http://hilights.org/archives/5877

Having this piece represent my writing skills is an honor because I feel I satisfied the players with the story. The team had an undefeated regular season and they deserved a story that recognized them for their accomplishments during the season. I also provided a new and fresh approach to the story by including tweets the players posted about the season. N10. Sports Feature Team wins district championship Page 22 May 11, 2012

After interviewing the seniors, I felt inspired to write the stories. I knew immediately after conversing with the students the stories would write themselves. Not only did the stories get to recognize two seniors who had given their best effort throughout high school, but both students were excited to have stories written about them. Knowing the seniors were looking forward to reading a story about them in the newspaper encouraged me and helped me find inspiration when writing. N12. Personality profile Page 4 May 11, 2012
