Brunswick’s Non Stop Successes Brunswick, Medina County’s largest city, is on a

very good run. During the last ten years, the City has welcomed Cleveland Clinic and Southwest General medical and emergency room facilities to town. And between Tri-C’s new Brunswick University Center and the University of Akron’s Midpoint Campus, six colleges and universities now offer higher education and degree programs in town too. Our numbers are great. Our industrial/commercial property values have increased over 40% these last 10 years, with per capita income increasing by 25%. We’ve linked to the recently completed fiber optic ring, which is 151 miles of publiclyowned dark fiber that connects all of Medina County’s major metropolitan areas. And our city government currently operates with 30% fewer employees than it did 10 years ago, and still provides stellar community services. Our quality residents remain the City’s primary distinction. One of our high school’s seniors, Selena Pasadyn, received the 2011 national Wendy’s High School Heisman Trophy at a New York City ceremony; she was the first female Ohioan to receive the award. And in 2012, senior Vinh Trinh was selected to join the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band, and performed with an elite group of the nation’s high school musicians during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl halftime show, at the San Antonio, Texas Alamodome. the Brunswick Blue Pride Foundation, an all volunteer non-profit association created last year, now provides scholarship assistance to several of our college-bound students. Some local rugby buffs recently started a Brunswick Rugby Program and, in only the program’s second year, won the Division II State Championship. Our VFW Post 9520 was one of 2 Ohio Posts receiving the national “All American Post” designation awarded at the VFW’s National Convention in Kentucky this past July. And Brunswick again hosted the National MS Society’s August “Pedal to the Point” event, in which several thousand cyclists rode 75 to 150 miles to raise money for an MS cure. The city’s 120+ member team, We’re MAD (Making a Difference), was one of the event’s largest. Brunswick just continues buzzing. Come and contribute your part to a self-made success story. It is a great community. And there’s plenty more to come. Mayor Gary F. Werner City of Brunswick, Ohio

Brunswick: Safe, Affordable and Thriving By Ken McEntee

>> Continued on next page

In a world where location matters, Brunswick is ideally situated whether you’re looking for a place to live or a place to run a business. But having easy highway access to just about anyplace you want to go in Northeast Ohio isn’t all that makes Brunswick one of the area’s most desirable destinations. “Brunswick is a wonderful community,” says Mayor Gary Werner. “We have low taxes, high safety ratings, affordable housing, a top-notch school district and excellent amenities. We’re a family-oriented community. That’s why people want

to live in Brunswick.” NEW IN TOWN: The As evidence of Brunswick’s growing Mayor helps welcome popularity, Werner notes that the town the Passion Juice Bar to Brunswick. was ranked 16th in Cleveland Magazine’s “2013 Rating the Suburbs” feature. “We moved up from 19th in 2012,” the mayor says. “And named us as one of the 100 safest cites in the whole country.” Also, says Economic Development Coordinator Tim Smith, Brunswick has become a “Mecca for education and medicine.”

City Overview

“People don’t realize that there are six colleges offering classes and degrees right here in Brunswick,” Smith says. “We have made a concerted effort to attract colleges to make it more convenient for our students to advance their education.” Colleges with a Brunswick presence include Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland State University, Tiffin University and Franklin University, all of which have locations at the Brunswick University Center, on Route 303. Meanwhile, the Midpoint Campus Center, at Pearl and Boston Roads, houses Lorain County Community College and the University of Akron. The current $20 million expansion of the Cleveland Clinic Brunswick Family Health Center, on Route 303, will give the city its second full service 24-hour emergency room. The ER at the Southwest General Brunswick Health Center opened in 2010. “The current project will double the size of the Clinic’s facility to about 80,000 square feet,” Smith says. “Having two emergency rooms will make Brunswick very unique and will give residents fast and convenient access to emergency care. In the past, it could take 20 to 30 minutes to get to a hospital.” Along with the Southwest General and Cleveland Clinic medical facilities, Brunswick also hosts Digestive Disease Consultants, and a new dialysis center operated by Dr. Ronald Flauto is expected to open this year. “Bringing in major institutions like Southwest General and Cleveland Clinic in recent years sends a message that Brunswick is a very good place for investment,” Werner says.

GRAND OPENINGS: The Mayor cuts the ribbon (top) at the new Honey Hut Ice Cream Shop; Wild Fusion Restaurant opens on Center Road (above); Digestive Disease Consultants new 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art medical office and endoscopy center in Brunswick (lower left).

“Those institutions could go anywhere they want to go and be welcomed, and they chose Brunswick.” Smith notes that activity has been strong in the city’s Industrial Parks as well. Integrated Marketing Technologies (IMT) last year purchased another company, bringing 55 new jobs to Brunswick and relocating into a 125,000 square foot facility. Automation Tool and Die opened its fourth building in the industrial park, while M-Line Inc. relocated from a 20,000 square foot plant to an 80,000 square foot facility. Other major expansions in the past year included Ronlen Industries and Yost Foods. “We work hard not only to attract new businesses, but to retain the ones we have,” Smith says. “That’s why the completion this spring of the Medina County fiber optic ring was so important. Businesses today need to have reliable, high speed broadband. The fiber optic network that covers the industrial parks and routes 42 and 303, provides it at a substantial savings compared to a T-1 line. It’s a big advantage we can offer to Brunswick businesses.” Another is low property taxes. “We have lower property taxes than any community that surrounds us,” the mayor notes.

“That’s not only good for our businesses, but for our residents as well.” Brunswick residents also benefit from a bustling retail sector that features locally-owned and national chain dining and shopping options for just about any need. “There is plenty for folks to do in Brunswick,” Werner says. “We have 330 acres of park land that we operate in conjunction with the Medina County Parks District. The Susan Hambley Nature Center, at Brunswick Lake Park, gives people a chance to explore nature and participate in educational programs. And our community is very big in supporting youth sports – everything from football to lacrosse to swimming. It’s one of the things that brings our families together.” What stands out the most about Brunswick residents, the mayor believes, is their generosity and sense of community. “The people here are good citizens. They are generous with their time and resources,” Werner says. “When we had a major tragedy in our town a year ago, I was completely blown away by the outpouring of compassion and fellowship. As a city government, there are certain things we can do. But we can’t create quality residents. It’s just who we are. The people of Brunswick are the kind of folks I want to share a city with.” SHARING OUR PRIDE: The Rotary Club Float in the Fourth of July Parade.

A Message From the Superintendent As Superintendent, I know there is nothing more important to the long-term success of our schools than the trust and respect of our community—which is why our administration and staff strive to maintain clear lines of communications with our residents, to use the resources they provide us wisely, and to never ask for more funding than we need. Over the course of the past year, we have made more than a dozen presentations to groups throughout our community. From local business associations to Parent-Teacher Organizations, we have openly discussed the state of our schools, and have gathered invaluable insights and opinions on how to pragmatically move forward. When early state budget proposals made it difficult to predict how much state funding would be available for our schools, we chose to withdraw our May 7th levy request and wait until we could honestly and accurately assess our needs. Now, with state funding finalized and our budget stretched to perilous limits, it is clear that it will be up to us to maintain the high-quality, cost-effective schools our community has come to expect. We have gone seven years without asking our residents for new operating dollars. During that time, we cut $4 million from our budget, eliminated 17 staff and administrative positions, and increased health care contributions

from all our employees. Still, our schools are losing $2.8 million every year due to changes in the tax code. If we cannot secure additional funding, we must make another $3 million in cuts that will impact our educational core. While our schools will continue to identify cost-saving measures, additional funding will ensure that our schools can maintain the essential teachers, technology, books, and educational opportunities that prepare students for college and good jobs. Thank you for your support of our district. I look forward to continued opportunities to work with everyone in our community in the upcoming school year. Go Big Blue!

Esbi International Salon The Beauty of You

Hello. Today is a wonderful day. As we begin our fourth year here at our beautiful salon we want to dedicate a few moments to sincerely recognize and thank all of the people who have made Esbi the wonderful place that it is. First and foremost I would like to thank God for all His blessings. We are blessed with a life of contentment and a successful business that has been made possible by so many loyal customers whom we cannot begin to thank enough. As a salon, we would like to thank the Brunswick community for accepting us into their city and truly embracing a salon that is different in many ways. Four years ago, we were blessed to have found a magnificent, stately building in which to make our new home. Ironically, we discovered that our building brought mixed blessings – because of its beauty, some people assumed that we only welcomed an upscale clientele and that we were out of their price range. Those who stopped in, however, quickly realized that they didn’t have to spend a lot of money to be treated like royalty. The Esbi team is dedicated to pampering

every customer with the same attentive service whether the customer is getting a basic cut or a more complex and trendy styling. With ladies’ cuts and styles starting at just $33, everybody is truly welcome at Esbi. Our customers are always welcome to relax and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or tea and release the stress of the day. While our acceptance by the Brunswick community has been heartwarming, we also want to thank our customers from surrounding communities, as well as those who drive a considerable distance to visit us regularly. We have loyal clients from all over Ohio – as far as Cincinnati – as well as from across the state line into Pittsburgh. We’re blessed and humbled to receive such loyalty and we want to assure you that we don’t take it for granted. We will continue to earn your business. As Artistic Director, I want to extend my personal thank you to our entire Esbi team. Starting with a friendly greeting at the front desk and moving back to exemplary service from our technicians in a child-friendly environment, all of our family members are a vital part of our success. Our customers can see from their first visit how different the Esbi culture is. To keep that culture pure, we

rarely hire stylists from other salons. Instead, we hire newly certified stylists straight out of cosmetology school, then train them into our team-focused system for 18 months. Our philosophy is one of collaboration and cooperation that makes everybody feel that they are an important part of our success. That’s one reason why our stylists don’t consider Esbi a job, but rather a long-term career. As a salon and a distributor of fabulous hair care products, Esbi is still growing. I believe that’s because God isn’t finished with what he has given us to do. We look forward to continuing the personal service and quality styling our valued customers have treasured over the years, and we are eager to meet many new friends in the months and years ahead.

Rito’s Italian Bakery & Imported Foods ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS BAKERIES IN OHIO Rito’s Italian Bakery & Imported Foods

was founded by Santo Rito, with the help and support of his sister Maria Belfiore and his wife Maria Rito. Santo came to America from the small town of Riposto, Sicily in 1955. He developed his trade as an apprentice in the most distinguished pasticcerie (pastry shops) of Taormina, a famous tourist spot in Sicily. Santo introduced the concepts of good Sicilian baking to the west side of Cleveland in the form of Rito’s Italian Bakery in 1965. Since then business has expanded and Rito’s Bakery moved to the suburbs of Cleveland in Parma and Brunswick. Both stores are landmarks of one of the most prestigious bakeries in Ohio. Santo continues to own and operate the stores with the help of his sister and his wife, and now has the added support of his children and grandchildren. There are many factors that have contributed to the business’s success, but mostly is all the hard work and dedication of the entire family. This dedication has ensured the bakery’s future and kept the tradition alive. Rito’s is known for its cookie trays,

Italian bread, wedding cakes, Sicilian cassata and cannoli, and especially the famous “Gigantic Cannoli” filled with three dozen miniature cannoli. They also offer party trays, carousel sandwiches, subs and pizzas, as well as full-service catering. Are You A Caregiver in Need of a Vacation? Vacation and respite care is the provision of shortterm, temporary relief to those who are caring for family members who might otherwise require permanent placement in a facility outside the home. Respite programs provide planned short-term and timelimited breaks for families in order to support and maintain the primary care giving relationship. Respite also provides a positive experience for the person receiving care. Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without some support. Respite provides a break for the family caregiver, which may prove beneficial to the health of the caregiver. 60% of family caregivers age 19-64 surveyed recently by the Commonwealth Fund reported fair or poor health, one or more chronic conditions, or a disability, compared with only 33% of non-caregivers. Brunswick is Low on Housing Inventory, Call a Local RealtorŽ Today The time has come! Sound the horns.. the real estate market in Brunswick is back! Brunswick has always been an attractive location for buyers because of its easy access to highways, its prime location between Akron and Cleveland, its varied price range of homes, and the general hometown feel while still having great city services and all modern amenities. The real estate market has definitely balanced out this year. In June of 2013, there were 192 homes on the market, last year in June there were 218. That’s a 11.9% drop in inventory. Along with that drop, has come a dramatic increase in sales. There were 67 homes that sold this past June and 54 that went under contract. The solds compared to last year are up 52.3%!! That is great news for the City of Brunswick. If you think those numbers seem too good to be true, just compare them to 2007. We have 45% less homes on the market in the last 12 months compared to the same time period in June 2007! We really need homes to sell. With the interest rates still at historic lows, and the long term value of housing, there are many buyers in the market

who are looking to make a move. We have many first-time buyers who know this is a great time to switch from rent into a home of their own. With interest rates having made a small climb recently, they want to get in while the rates are still low. Also, many transferees, move up buyers or buyers wishing to downsize are seizing this time in the market as a great time to make a move. If you are considering selling your home, call a local Realtor for an updated area pricing analysis. Especially those who thought about or tried to sell in the last five years, and did not make a move, you may be very surprised that the market and pricing for your home has changed‌for the better! - By Tina Grant, Branch Manager, Brunswick Howard Hanna, 330-741-0112,

Bringing Out the Best in Brunswick The main focus of the Optimist Club is helping and encouraging kids. Our motto is “Bringing out the best in kids.” Each Optimist Club determines the needs of the young people in its community and conducts programs to meet those needs. We work to get children involved in positive projects. We do this by sponsoring activities that let kids have fun and learn about success. Club members are best known in their communities for their upbeat attitudes. By believing in young people and empowering them to be the best they can, Optimist volunteers continually make this world a better place in which to live. Optimistic philosophy – to think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best. We are sponsors of the Brunswick Fishing Derby, Back-to-School Rally, Essay & Oratorical Contests, Youth Appreciation Week, Respect for the Law, Cancer Research for Kids, and more. Meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month in the Community Room at Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Brunswick. The Club is lining up some great events for kids this year and we could use some help. Contact us at or call 330-273-5767 — President Tim Smith
