HAKODATE 函館 One of Japan’s first international trade ports opened in 1854 by the Edo shogunate, Hakodate is attractive port town with an East-meets-West culture, historic buildings and seafood. Motomachi district on a scenic hillside keeps a nostalgic atmosphere. After the start of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, Hakodate is growing again as an international tourism city and the gateway of Hokkaido for rail travelers from Tokyo. We recommend you to spend two days in the city and admire a romantic night view from Hakodate-yama.

• Air: Hakodate Airport connects with Honshu’s three major cities and Sapporo. • Bus: Highway buses run from Sapporo to Hakodate continue to Yunokawa Onsen. • Ferry: Frequent ferries operate to Hakodate from Aomori Prefecture. • Train: The Hokkaido Shinkansen (bullet train) connects Tokyo with Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto. The liner trains from and to Hakodate timed to meet the shinkansen. Limited express trains run between Hakodate and Sapporo.

Motomachi & The Bay Area 元町 · ベイエリア ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES Hakodate Station Area 函館駅前 Hakodate Morning Market 函館朝市 A good starting place for stroll the town is the lively Asa-ichi (morning market), immediately to the right as you exit JR Hakodate Station. It has about 280 small stores that selling fresh (but a bit pricey) seafood, such as ika (squid) and kani (crabs), from all over Hokkaido. Try ika-tsuri (squid fishing) from a tank and taste its sashimi right away at the Ekini Ichiba. There are also shokudo (eateries), food stands, fruit and vegetable shops. A 5-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station, the floating ship museum Mashu-maru was used as a Hakodate-Aomori train ferry from 1965 to 1988. The museum includes model ships, a steering gear room, ship’s re-create passenger rooms and history of the port. You can overlooking the port from decks and have Russian tea on the 3rd floor (10am-3pm). Onuma Park 大沼公園 Onuma (meaning a big marsh) is Southern Hokkaido’s most popular and beautiful resort that is designated as a quasi-national park. The volcanic mountain Koma-ga-take and its picturesque lakes offer good for picnic, cruise, camping, cycling and hiking. From the late 19th-century, expats in Hakodate have been visit Onuma for recreation. The lakeside park, about 30km north of Hakodate, can easily be visited for the day.

Onuma Park & Lakes A good place to access the lake is at Onumakoen Station, about 300m from the lakeside park square. Here you will find some nature trails over the islets, lake cruises and cafes. You can wander around the rim of the lake along a 14km paved road by bike (70min).

Onuma Yusen 大沼遊船 The Onuma Yusen runs scenic 30-minute cruises on the two lakes from April to early December. They also offers motorboats, rowboats and swan-shaped pedal boats. ‣ CRUISE: 8.20am-4.20pm early Apr-mid Dec (every 40min May-Oct); ¥1100 ‣ www.onuma-park.com

Higurashi-yama 日暮山 This small mountain (303m) offers pleasant views of the lakes and Koma-ga-take. A narrow road (1.5km) leads to the summit from the north side of Ko-numa.

Okushiri-to 奥尻島 About 18km west of the Oshima Peninsula and 60km northwest of Esashi, Okushiri-to is Southern Hokkaido’s only inhabited island (84km in circumference) covered with beech forest. The island has a couple of tranquil beaches, fantastically-shaped rocks and heartwarming hospitality. Cycling, camping and fresh seafood are also popular.

ATTRACTIONS & BEACHES Okushiri-to’s peaceful beaches and their clear water are the perfect place to chill out. You can pitch a tent for free at most beaches.

Central Okushiri 奥尻市街 On the island’s east coast is a town center of Okushiri, serves as the ferry access point. The Forest-and-Town Footpath offer a 5km walk from the ferry terminal. Nabetsuru-iwa なべつる岩 Okushiri’s symbolic sight is a 19.5m-tall, donut-shaped rock of Nabetsuru-iwa on the shore, a popular photo spot for all visitors. It is about 1km south of the ferry terminal. The rock is lit up in the evening. Unimaru Park うにまるパーク About 3km south of the ferry terminal, this hillside park has a unique monument of uni (sea urchin) with good ocean views, especially after dark. If you are short-distance cycling from the town center, here is a good turnaround point.
