Enough trials in here to keep you exploring for years. Some negative reviews mention that it leaves out some iconic offroading excursions. The book addresses this. They rate the trails on a 1 to 10 scale and don't include anything rated 8 or more. So if extensive experience and possible vehicle damage is needed it's not in here. But that means it rates up from drives you can do in 2wd all the way up to exciting excursions you can do alone. Beyond that you need guides, groups, and specialized gear anyway.Knocking off one star because I wish there was more descriptions and history for the trails. The book is a bit dated now with much of its space dedicated to GPS coordinates. Online maps, satellite images, and the ability to download GPS trails off the net makes these basically unnecessary.0 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
Great BookBy Girl Who Loves Bought this book for my husband as we jeep often. He can't put the book down and have planned trips already for the spring! Quality of book was great.4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Book for Exploring UtahBy Mark GSo far I have enjoyed this book. If you are mostly interested in rock crawling Moab's famous slick rock trails and pushing your rig to its limits this is not the book for your. There are much better books and trail maps for that purpose. If you are looking for a book that will take you exploring all the fabulous back country and scenic places of Utah this book is great. Not perfect but great. The narratives are usefull. The histories add color to the trip. The details get you in and out without too much trouble. I bought this for our last scenic trip and I only had to lock in my 4WD hubs once or twice so this tells you about the kind of book it is. Dont get me wrong. We often find ourselves on steep clift with sheer drops on one side. However, many of the trails can be done with any high clearance vehicle. Some of the trails that it covers are the Moab slick rock or rock crawling kind of trails but this book is about exploring a vast variety of places. We used it to explore Robbers Roost area (known for Butch Cassady and the Wild Bunch). We have also used the book to explore Cathedral Valley and Capital Reef area. I have only had it for a short while so I am still getting familiar with it but many others in our group have owned this book for years. The book covers all of Utah and breaks the state into 4 regions. There are very brief histories and pictures about some of the places. It talks about mines in the area, ghost towns and the figures that are part of the history. 4WD Adventures: Utah navigates you for 3,721 miles through the spectacular canyonlands region of Utah, to the top of the Uinta Range, across vast salt flats, and along trails unchanged since the late 19th century when riders of the Pony Express sped from station to station and daring young outlaws wreaked havoc on a multitude of newly established stage lines, railroads, and frontier towns. In addition to the enormously detailed trail information with color photos depicting each trail, there are hundreds of photos of frontier towns, historic mining operations, old railroad routes, local wildflowers, and native animals. Trail history is brought to life through the accounts of outlaws like Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch; explorers and mountain men like Jim Bridger; and the tenacity of and deprivations endured by early Mormon settlers led by Brigham Young. 544 pages, color throughout. 4WD Adventures: Utah is perhaps the most comprehensive backcountry guidebook weve seen to date. -- 4 Wheel Drive SportThere are other four-wheel guides but 4WD Adventures: Utah is the first to try and cover the entire state. -Deseret News
