Hello explorers!

My name is Teddy Keen and I’m the discoverer of the Unknown Adventurer’s famous Lost Books! See picture over there.

Why do I say explorers and not readers? Well, long, long ago, in the depths of time when I was your age, I used to get lost in books. Especially ones about the wonders of the world and dangerous animals! Books would take me back in time - even forward in time - to anywhere I could imagine. And some places I couldn’t imagine - the unknown. And that’s exactly what exploration is about. I now get to go to those very places I dreamt of all those years ago - vast mountains, sunken shipwrecks and everything in between. And it’s all because I stepped into those wondrous pages that were filled with dreams and possibility. And sometimes dust.

So, keep exploring guys. As the Unknown Adventurer says, ‘The Universe Belongs To The Adventurous.’

Explore our Kahoot! page - filled with exciting quizzes and games to spark imagination and make reading a fun family adventure!

Read from left to right Hello! Hi!

Out in the ocean of ultramarine there’s a world full of wonders that waits to be seen ...

Every day there are wonderful treasures to reach in the sparkling bay of a warm sandy beach

From a rainbow of reef to the song of a whale –there are sharks full of teeth and an eel with a tale!

Creatures that glow in the dark of the deep or an octopus garden where jellyfish sleep

In waters as salty as sea turtle tears there are seahorses dancing away through the years

Penguins that cuddle together and squeeze on a platform of ice in the Antarctic freeze ...

A sea full of magic for every child, from a whale full of song to a storm full of wild!

How many orange fish can you count?

How many blue can you count?

I smiled at the whale and the whale smiled at me.

Where land becomes sky and the sky becomes sea, I first saw the whale . . . . . . and the whale first saw me. And high on the breeze came his sweet-sounding song –

We sailed the blue ocean with turtles and rays, And tail-splashed the seagulls in deep water bays.

‘I’ve so much to show you, if you’ ll come along.’

We danced with the dolphins that waltzed through the sea . . .

I laughed with the whale and the whale laughed with me.

I took a deep breath and we dived through the blue, And there, on the bottom, a ship with no crew!

We swam over mountains, through valleys of sand –An ocean in motion, a bright busy land –With carpets of colours that breathed with the sea .

I watched with the whale and the whale watched with me.

We ducked under arches, no treasure to see . . .

We crashed through the surface. We splashed oh, so high –A splutter, a rumble then ‘whoosh’ to the sky!

‘I’m flying!’ I cried to the cold ice-capped sea . . .

I shrugged at the whale and the whale shrugged at me.

I waved to the whale and the whale waved to me.

C0L0SSAL SQUID A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A ...

Oh, hello there. I’m a colossal squid, living 1,000 m down in the Antarctic Ocean.

Along with the g iant squid, I’m one of the longest and h eaviest squid around.

PFFT – I COULD BEAT YOU ANY DAY

When I raise my arms and tentacles, you know I'm ready to strike. ... JUST OUT FOR A NICE SWIM

Then I pounce with my hooked arms and spiky, suckered tentacles.

They don’t call me ‘colossal’ for nothin g . I’m at least as long as a London b us, and red, too. Not that colours matter much in the dark. MY EYES CAN BE 30 CM WIDE OR MORE – ALL THE BETTER TO SEE YOU WITH.

I spend a lot of my da y s huntin g for fish that live down here wit h me in t h e darkness.

OH HEY, PAL ...

I shine light out of my two huge eyes to startle prey.

HU H?

I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS

Despite being colossal, my oesophagus* is only 10 mm wide. I have to do a lot of chewing before I can swallow.

And I also have to avoid being eaten myself by sperm whales.

YUM!

THE BIGGER PICTURE CL0SE-UP

Colossal squids are 'molluscs' – relatives of snails and slu g s. Because we live deep down in cold, dark water, everything humans know about us comes from just a few specimens brought up by fishermen and studied by scientists.

SUPER SWIMMER

Colossal squid swim b y rippling our fins, but we can also use jet propulsion to power through the water.

We have three hearts, blue blood and a brain the shape of a doughnut!

EYE SEE YOU

Our eyes are believed to be the lar g est in the whole animal kingdom. They also have a special organ called a photophore for producing light.

SELF DEFENCE

Our tentacles have toothed suckers to help catch prey and fi g ht whales, and our arms h ave both suckers AND hooks.
