It may go by a different name, such as ground chuck, but it us usually easier on the food budget than most other options. Speed is where this meal starter really shows its prowess for speeding up meal preparation. It only takes a few minutes to crumble ground beef into a hot skillet or sauce pan, perhaps with a tablespoon or two of olive or canola oil to reduce the risk of sticking, and brown the meat until all the pink coloration is gone. This is necessary because if meats must be thoroughly cooked so that any harmful organisms that could be contained within them are killed off. As the meat finishes browning, you can stir in some finely chopped onion, garlic, mushrooms, green peppers, grated carrots or whatever similar ingredients happen to be handy and available in your refrigerator. When the onion is soft and translucent, that is the time to stir in a can or tomato sauce, a splash of red wine or balsamic vinegar, and several sprinkles of dried herbs such as basil, oregano, marjoram or fennel seeds. Some chefs also like to add a small amount of a sweetener, such as brown sugar, molasses or honey for extra depth of flavor. Then you need only simmer, covered for about 30 minutes, giving the sauce a stir every now and then while you boil up a pot of water and in it cook your favorite pasta. In a flash, you'll have a delicious spaghetti, linguini or penni with meat sauce that you and your family will enjoy as a hearty, nourishing supper.
