The 2014 French Open kick-starts today with its first round action on Monday as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka will be among those in action. First up on court will be the seventh seeded Maria Sharapova, one of the in-form stories this season. Sharapova will begin her campaign with a first round match against Russia’s Ksenia Pervak, an opponent she has played just once before this. Incidentally that match came at the French Open too, in 2010, with Sharapova triumphing in straight sets then. Pervak required three successive three-setters to make the main draw of the competition while Sharapova is coming off a second round loss at Rome after she won the titles at Stuttgart and Madrid. Maria Sharapova Following this one will be the second men’s seed Djokovic, who takes on Portugal’s Joao Sousa in his opening match of the competition. On another day one would have probably called it a tough nut to crack for Djokovic this early but Sousa has had an awful season so far and comes into this match with a seven-match losing streak under his belt. Djokovic, who won the title at Rome two weeks ago, will be an overwhelming favourite to win in straight sets, against an opponent whose last win at the ATP circuit came in Casablanca in March. Djokovic is also 1-0 on head-to-head, having defeated Sousa in the 2013 US Open third round match. Novak Djokovic The third seeded Stanislas Wawrinka will also take court for his opening round match against Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. This could be an interesting one on the day given that GarciaLopez, ranked 39th in the world, has beaten Wawrinka twice before this and on clay both times. While Wawrinka leads the overall tally against his opponent 6-2, Garcia-Lopez won in Madrid in 2011 and in Hamburg in 2009, both times on clay and that should give him some confidence against the Australian Open winner. Wawrinka is also coming off two early defeats on clay, having lost his opener at Madrid and then having won just one match at Rome before going down to Tommy Haas. Stanislas Wawrinka The world number number one, and defending champion Nadal plays American world number 277, Robby Ginepri in what should be a very simple opening round fixture for the Spaniard. Ginepri’s only previous match against Nadal came in 2005 and the world number one had won that one at Madrid (on hard court) in straight sets. Ginepri lost his opening round match at Nice last week while Nadal was a losing finalist at Rome to Djokovic after having won the title at Madrid. Among the others in action today, sixth seeded Jelena Jankovic will be up against Canadian Sharon Fichman, fifth seeded Petra Kvitova plays Zarina Diyas and the ninth seeded Kei Nishikori will take on Martin Klizan of Slovakia.
