SOM A C h o c ol at e m a k e r
When I drop by Soma’s new location on King Street West, I make a beeline for the hand-crafted chocolates and truffles. The smell of cocoa permeates the air of the open space and it’s deadly for chocolate addicts like myself wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth.
The beurre noisette truffle and feuillitine caramel (a rich, chewy caramel rolled in crispy crêpe-like flakes) are my personal favourites, but for something truly unique, try the Gooderham & Worts Whisky, Douglas Fir or 8-year old balsamic vinegar truffles. The house-made, gelato and sorbetto are the perfect summertime (or anytime) treat with flavours that include bright and refreshing blueberry-basil and rich and indulgent dulce de leche. Soma also produces decadent small-batch chocolate bars and baked goods including a variety of drool-worthy Italian cookies and focaccia to die for. The new space offers an up-close look at how Soma churns out their chocolates and sweets with a glassenclosed chocolate lab and bakery where you can watch the magic happen. ——Veronica VanDenEnde
