The Moonstone Shines BrightlyBy Robert BeaumontMichael Morpurgo has written as follows since I first posted my review: "A compelling east-West adventure takes us from the Temple of the Moon on the remote coast of Gujarat, India, to an Anglo-Indian mansion on the Yorkshire moors. A sumptuous saga with an exciting cliff-hanger ending."The Moonstone Legacy, which takes its inspiration from Wilkie
Collins' classic Victorian novel The Moonstone, is the first in a trilogy of books for both teenagers and adults. On this evidence, I can't wait for the next two installments.Authors Diana de Gunzburg and Tony Wild have created a vivid world, where nothing is quite as it seems and where the battle of good against evil has many twists and turns. As the fast-paced storyline moves effortlessly from the picturesque backdrop of the North York Moors to the remote Gujarat region of India, the reader becomes embroiled in the young heroine Lizzy's quest to find out whether her mother's sudden death was linked to a family curse.Lizzy, a precocious yet immensely likeable teenager, encounters numerous obstacles along the way, including her ghastly cousins (a chilling portrait of unshackled snobbery) and some unscrupulous and unexpected enemies. But she finds frienship and loyalty, too, as her journey takes her to the very heart of her family's chequered history.I highly recommend this book, both to teenagers and adults alike. It is a fresh and highly original twist on the age-old battle of good and evil, with well-rounded characters, cracking dialogue and a startling conclusion. In a sacred cave high in the mountains of northern India, a white-haired hermit sits cross-legged, and signs his final testament: "George Abercrombie, 1874..."In present-day England, fourteen year old Lizzy Abercrombie's mother dies in a tragic accident on the full moon. But was it really an accident? Lizzy discovers that her death may be linked to a mysterious family curse. Determined to find the truth, her quest takes her from a splendid Anglo-Indian mansion on the Yorkshire moors to India, where she uncovers her ancestor's terrible past and a stolen inheritance. But her discoveries put her in mortal danger from a ruthless enemy.
