EDITOR’S LETTER Dear Bookaziner, The last number of months has been a difficult and emotional time for all of us, and we are heartbroken by the events that have transpired in Hong Kong. Let’s hope that Christmas celebrations can bring some reprise and give us something to look forward to. One of the things that has helped us through these tumultuous times is escaping into a great book. This year we have been carried away to The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, Range by David Epstein and The Overstory by Richard Powers. And it’s not going to stop there. There are still many fantastic books to be released in the next couple of months. Have a look at our selection for grown-ups (page 16-17) and kids (page 24-25) and keep adding to your reading list. This year also gave us the chance to meet many talented authors who launched their books at Bookazine, to team up with the Hong Kong Literary Festival and to host exciting events such as the Children’s Bookfest, a Unicorn Party, an International Day of the Girl celebration and the list goes on. We are also very proud that we’ve achieved our goal to raise enough funds to build a library in India with Room to Read! All of this was possible because of you, so we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your fabulous support. The season of giving will be in full swing shortly. Little ones are writing their letters to Santa, while grown-ups are looking for the best presents for their friends and family. To make your Christmas shopping easier, we’ve curated a wide selection of gifts, advent calendars, treats and decorations. Leaf through the pages of this catalogue for inspiration: from unique books to gifts under $200 and the best toys of the season, we have something for everyone and every budget! The celebration won’t come to an end after Christmas at Bookazine. 2020 marks our 35th anniversary! We are working on many surprises and events to make this year an unforgettable one, so stay tuned as more information will be unveiled soon. From all of us at Bookazine, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Bookazine team

The greatest chronicler of the age turns his incisive gaze to the tumultuous present
EXCERPTTHE GIVER OF STARS by Jojo Moyes woman at the front of the hall called: ‘So, what would it mean? This horseback-librarian thing?’ ‘Well, it would involve riding to some of our more remote dwellings, and providing reading materials to those who might not otherwise be able to travel to the county libraries, due to, say, ill-health, frailty or lack of transportation.’ She lowered her head so that she could see over her half-moon spectacles. ‘I would add that this is to aid the spread of education, to help bring knowledge to those places where it might currently be sadly lacking. Our president and his wife believe this project can bring knowledge and learning back to the foreground of rural lives.’ ‘I ain’t letting my lady ride up in no mountain,’ came a call from the back. ‘You just afraid she won’t come back again, Henry Porteous?’ ‘You can have mine. I’d be more’n happy if she rode off and never come home!’ A burst of laughter travelled across the room. Mrs Brady’s voice lifted in frustration. ‘Gentlemen. Please. I am asking for some of our ladies to contribute to our civic good and sign up. The WPA will provide the horse and the books, and you would simply be required to commit to at least four days a week delivering them. There will be early starts and long days, given the topography of our beautiful county, but I believe there will be huge rewards.’ ‘So why don’t you do it?’ came a voice from the back. ‘I would volunteer, but as many of you know I am a martyr to my hips. Dr Garnett has warned me that to ride such distances would be too great a physical challenge. Ideally we are looking for volunteers among our younger ladies.’ ‘It ain’t safe for a young lady by herself. I’m agin it.’ ‘’Tain’t proper. Women should be looking after the home. What’s next? Women down the mines? Driving lumber trucks?’ ‘Mr Simmonds, if you can’t see there’s a world of difference between a lumber truck and a copy of Twelfth Night, then Lord help Kentucky’s economy, for I don’t know where we’ll be headed.’ ‘Families should be reading the Bible. Nothing else. Who’s going to keep an eye on what they’re putting out there, anyhow? You know what they’re like up north. They might spread all kinds of crazy notions.’ ‘It’s books, Mr Simmonds. The same you learned with when you were a boy. But, then, I seem to remember you were more keen on tweaking girls’ pigtails than you were on reading.’ Another burst of laughter. Nobody moved. A woman looked at her husband, but he gave a small shake of his head. Mrs Brady raised a hand. ‘Oh, I forgot to mention. It is a paid opportunity. Remuneration will be in the region of twenty-eight dollars a month. So, who would like to sign up?’
England, late 1930s, and Alice Wright - restless, stifled - makes an impulsive decision to marry wealthy American Bennett Van Cleve and leave her home and family behind. But stuffy, disapproving Baileyville, Kentucky, where her husband favours work over his wife and is dominated by his overbearing father, is not the adventure or the escape - that she hoped for. That is, until she meets Margery O'Hare, a troublesome woman - and daughter of a notorious felon - the town wishes to forget. Margery's on a mission to spread the wonder of books and reading to the poor and lost - and she needs Alice's help. Trekking alone under big open skies, through wild mountain forests, Alice, Margery and their fellow sisters of the trail discover freedom, friendship - and a life to call their own. But when the town turns against them, will their belief in one another - and the power of the written word - be enough to save them?
Inspired by a remarkable true story, The Giver of Stars features five incredible women who will prove to be every bit as beloved as Lou Clark, the unforgettable heroine of Me Before You.

The world record for an episode of hiccups belonged to an Iowa man named Charles Osborne. In 1922 he began hiccupping while lifting a large hog for slaughtering and continued to do so for the next 68 years. (Except while he was sleeping, however; then it ceased.) His dinner party invitations dwindled to nothing. (I just made this up, I have no idea.) After hiccupping 430 million times he mysteriously stopped doing so in 1990, one year before his death. A book about his case was titled Revenge of the Pig. (Just made this up too.)
