This catalog is produced by the Great Lakes Independent Booksellers Association, which is comprised of independent bookstores in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Wisconsin. The independent bookstore is alive and well, particularly in this area of the country. Our numbers are growing like never before, and it is all due to you. People who shop at independent bookstores instead of online or at chain stores not only support their local bookstore, they also bring revenue back into their communities. Studies have shown that for every dollar spent in a chain store, only 14 percent of each dollar returns to the community. Shopping in locally owned businesses returns over 48 percent back to the community in salaries, taxes and in other ways. For online businesses, 0 percent stays in the community. Thank you for supporting your locally owned bookstore and your community. Where you spend your money matters!
