Welcome It’s an amazing time to join Bolton College, where the new Gold Standard in advanced technical education, the new T Level qualifications, will be offered from 2021. We’re an elite College, and part of the University of Bolton Group, offering you a gateway to all of Greater Manchester’s vast range of fantastic opportunities for specialist careers, university degree courses and higher Apprenticeships. What sets our programmes apart is the opportunity to put the things you learn about your chosen industry into practice in an employment setting, either as an apprentice, through Industry Placements or work experience. Supporting you to be well prepared for these experiences is our highest priority. This year, we will launch our Employer Academies, bringing employers even closer to you, both in College and in placement activities. In College, if you give us your best - including good attendance, focus on learning and making the most of the opportunities that we will provide for you – we’ll make sure you reach your full potential, and we’ll support you every step of the way. During our last inspection, we were graded 2 for ‘Good’ – Ofsted highlighted the fact that our learners develop good employability and personal skills, and that a high proportion progress to Apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education. So whatever your ambitions, you’re in safe hands! If you’d like some support with choosing your next step, you can attend an Open Event – see page 2 or call the team on 01204 482 182.

Disclaimer: Every care has been taken to ensure that the information contained within this guide was accurate at the time of printing. Bolton College is constantly evaluating its services to meet the needs of learners; therefore programmes/courses, resources, facilities and delivery methods may be subject to change without prior notice. The Government is currently introducing positive Apprenticeship reform with the creation of Employer Trailblazer Groups, who are developing new Apprenticeship standards. As such, Apprenticeship qualifications may be subject to change. Progress to Success courses are suggested study routes that learners can take, but they also have the opportunity to take on other opportunities.

Part of Life’s Essentials

English, Maths & Digital Skills

Employers choose candidates with good English, maths and digital skills, which means you will continue to develop these crucial skills to the standards that employers require. Not only are English and maths crucial for employability, they are essential for higher level study. English and/or maths may form an important part of your study programme, providing you with the underpinning skills to achieve your potential in your vocational course, employment and further learning. This is why dedicated English and maths classes make up a large part of many study programmes, and these skills are also embedded into every teaching session of your vocational course. If you left school with a GCSE English and/or Maths at grade 3 or below, you’ll study English and maths to gain that vital GCSE grade 9-4.

FAQs

I’m no good at English and maths

What if I don’t get my GCSE grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths at school?

We think you can be and we can prove it! Every year hundreds of our students achieve grade 4 and guess what, they enjoy the subject! We take a fresh approach and will work with you to get rid of your barriers to achievement.

Your future employer wants grade 4 abilities in English and maths, and you will also need these skills to achieve your full potential on your main course. You will continue to study to achieve these qualifications as part of your study programme, until you gain a grade 4 or equivalent. What’s the point? Life and work are so much easier if you have good skills in English and maths - you will be happier, more confident and better off financially.

So I can work towards achieving my GCSE grade 9-4 in English and/or Maths? Yes! We will encourage you to take a step at a time, potentially improving a grade at a time. You will be supported to work at your own pace.

If you’re planning to take a T Level or progress to university, and you have a grade 4 in English or maths, please check the requirements for your next step. If you do require a grade 5 or above, please speak to your Learning Development Mentor who will ensure you get on to an appropriate GCSE course. 22

Young People’s Guide 2021

People with good GCSE grades in English and maths earn approximately £2,000 more per year than those who don’t!

www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

We may encourage you to continue to develop your skills in maths by attending our Bright Sparks programme, which is the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Studies, giving you a real edge in the jobs market. I need extra support with my English and maths. Can I get some help? Yes, you have the ability to pass and our tutors will get you there! If you have difficulties or disabilities, English and maths will form part of your programme and we’ll help you to develop at your own pace and level. Work-related learning, work experience and preparation for work play key roles in your programmes; English and maths will be embedded into these too.

Josh-Lee Williams GCSE Maths Former pupil of Thornleigh Salesian College ‘The atmosphere on the course is fantastic; there’s good team spirit and everyone supports each other. I’m re-doing my Maths GCSE alongside my Carpentry & Joinery course, so that I’m able to progress to my Level 3 and get a job once I’m qualified.

Mishell Granda Salazar GCSE English Schooled in Spain ‘I want to improve my English skills so that I can continue learning and progress to university to study criminology. I’ve enjoyed learning new things in class and I’m always made to feel so welcome in College. I’ve also made lots of new friends.’

Good English and maths skills don’t just help in the classroom. proficiency in these subjects improves your communication skills and allows you to understand money as well as the world around you.

Employers and universities usually require candidates to have achieved GCSE 9-4 in English and Maths, and for some programmes Science, before they consider offering them a job or a course place. We want everyone to improve their skills in these essential areas, so you’ll continue to study English and Maths up to at least a grade 4 in each subject; the classes also prioritise developing your digital skills, so you’ll improve on these too. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop skills required by employers, including: • Maths & English • Business awareness & customer care • Team-working & time management

• Helping you to stay on track with your course • Exploring further study, career and university options • Making sure you are prepared to succeed in the world of work • Supporting your wellbeing so your time at college is a successful and happy

Student Mentors

Working closely with our LDM team we have a friendly team of Student Mentors who are always on hand to offer one-to-one support outside of the classroom; providing informal confidential mentoring; and where relevant, to help you liaise with a range of external agencies such as health services, social care, youth and restorative services, and wider education services.

Inclusion for All Bolton College is committed to providing equal opportunities in education for all learners and we will do all we can to meet the needs of individuals.

Learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities or Anxiety If you have a special educational need or disability, or anxiety, you should make sure your tutor knows. This is for any special need you have, and it doesn’t matter whether you have an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP). For example, you might have a medical condition or find it difficult to travel by yourself. Your education provider - the College - will help you to prepare and plan for your placement, make sure you have the support you need and that the employer knows about your needs, so that any adjustments can be made, if required. If you need support for your disability at your work placement, staff at College will work with you to design a plan that is right for you. They will also talk to the employer so that they understand your needs and can work with you.

Risk Assessments

In addition to the health and safety policies in the workplace, the College may have completed a risk assessment relating to your disability and personal circumstances. You should be familiar with this. Your employer will also be familiar with it. You can check this with your support contact at College.
