Apprenticeships for Adults It's a common misconception that Apprenticeships are designed exclusively for young people. An Apprenticeship can work for you, whatever your age.

Adults lead busy lives, so assignments can be completed at home or in the workplace, whatever suits your lifestyle.

Apprenticeships are perfect if you'd like to change your career, or get back into employment.

English and maths are vital, so we'll give you the qualifications required for your occupation.

6

Benefits of an Adult Apprenticeship

An Apprenticeship will give you a formal qualification and improve your career prospects.

Apprentices receive guidance and support from experienced assessors and employers.

Older apprentices bring a wealth of experience to an Apprenticeship and existing skills can be utilised.

You can study an Apprenticeship in the following areas... Accountancy - Barbering - Beauty Therapy - Brickwork - Business Administration Care Leadership & Management - Carpentry & Joinery - Catering & Hospitality Childcare - Clinical Science - Coaching - Computer Installation & Repair Customer Services - Design - Digital Marketing - Electrical Installation - Exercise & Fitness Hairdressing - Health & Social Care - Information Technology - Motor Vehicle Painting & Decorating - Paralegal - Plastering - Plumbing - Roofing PE & School Sports - Teaching - Team Leading & Management

Don't take our word for it, see what our adult apprentices have to say...

Hairdressing Apprentice is a Cut Above the Rest Sharon Edwards, 30, left school at 16 with no qualifications but 14 years later, it's safe to say that her Apprenticeship has transformed her life. Sharon, who has just finished Level 2 of her Hairdressing Apprenticeship, is working at Kee One Hair Design in Atherton, and she says that the benefits of an Apprenticeship are immeasurable; Sharon's confidence has grown and she's finally fulfilling her potential. Sharon says, "I've juggled the Apprenticeship with being a busy mum to four children and it's still worked for me. The support I've received in College and at the salon has been invaluable. I've fallen in love with hairdressing and it feels great to be on the career ladder".

For more information please call 01204 482 036 or email apprenticeships@boltoncc.ac.uk

Vikki Kay, Manager at Kee One Hair Design, said "I'm a big advocate of Apprenticeships and Sharon has been the model apprentice. Her work ethic is excellent."

James Taylor Roof Slating & Tiling Apprenticeship Level 2 Working at Together Housing "I've worked as a roofer for 10 years and I chose an Apprenticeship to further my career. It's a sensible option to take; Apprenticeships aren't just for the young, if you're older and you haven't got any qualifications, this kind of course will help you to progress at work. In roofing, companies are always on the lookout for qualified roofers. I come into College for one week a month but for the other three weeks I'm actually at Together Housing and working on people's homes. It's very customer focused and it's great being practical and using my hands. College wise, the building is new and it's very easy to get around. More importantly, the equipment is up-to-date and the staff are really supportive. I would definitely recommend an Apprenticeship, whatever your age."

to consider an Access to Higher Education course. Access to HE Diplomas are designed specifically for adults who want to progress to Higher Education.

Amanda Walsh, 34, who has just completed an Access to HE Diploma in Nursing said, "Access is intense but I've managed to juggle my course with being a mum, working full-time and volunteering for 10 hours a week, so if I can do this, anyone can. I've just been offered a place at the University of Bolton to study nursing and I already feel like I’m at an advantage; we've covered parts of the degree course in our Access classes." Other learners have secured places as far afield as the University of London, proving that Access really is the gateway to Higher Education. *The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).

Ian Irungu Access to HE Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery "This course has given me a fantastic opportunity to get to university - I've got a conditional offer for a place at the University of London and then I plan to go into district nursing. I really liked the tutors, they're so helpful and are always ready to look at your drafts for assignments, constantly giving you that extra support and feedback. The course has been a big challenge - I've juggled it with working in a care home - but I'd still recommend it, it's been brilliant."

Fern Templeman Access to HE Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery Now studying at the University of Bolton "Access prepared me massively for university, it gave me a real insight into lectures and academic writing, so it was definitely worth the time and effort. Tutors on the Access course anticipated what I'd be learning at uni, so they taught me accordingly. In many ways, I was more prepared than if I'd done A-Levels, as the modules I completed at Access were very similar to those that I'm now doing at degree level."

Four Reasons to Study Higher Education at Bolton College Lower tuition fees than at university

More one-to-one support from tutors

Smaller class sizes

96% student satisfaction rates

Bolton College is commended for enhancement of student learning opportunities, including insight into sector-specific employment and preparation for work.

Sixth for Student Satisfaction

It’s been a great few years for Bolton College; as well as being graded 'good' in its recent Ofsted inspection, its Higher Education provision has been ranked sixth in the country for student satisfaction rates. The College meets the needs of many Higher Education students through Foundation Degrees (FdAs), Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and Certificates (HNCs) and Top-up Degrees. The Times Higher Education commented that in England, 18

overall student satisfaction stood at 85% but Bolton College exceeded this, hitting 92%! In June, the achievements of the College's HE students were celebrated in style at the College's annual HE Awards. Nearly 80 students and their families enjoying canapes and fizz, before posing for photos in their caps and gowns. Bill Webster, Principal of Bolton College said, "I've spoken to students and for many these courses are life-changing; Higher Education opens up a world

Nathan's Apprenticeship is a Design for Life Nathan Clancy agrees that his Level 3 Design Apprenticeship has been invaluable - it's given him a real taste of working life. Starting his placement just over a year ago Nathan, 18, progressed from a Diploma in Art & Design to a position at Cre8, a local web design company. Nathan says "I've learnt a lot because the Apprenticeship is all about hands-on experience; it's a lot different to being in College full-time". Paul Newton, Director of Cre8 added "Nathan's gone from strength to strength. The College have been fantastic to work with and I would recommend them to other businesses." /BoltonCollege

Daniel Yates Access to HE Diploma in Business Management "I left sixth form not really knowing what I wanted to do. I've been here for a year and thanks to the Access to HE course, I now have a clear plan. My goal is to go to university and I've gained a base knowledge of what I need to know to get there.

The teaching has been quality; Jodie, my tutor, is more like a mate. She helps me with assignments and makes sure I meet my deadlines so the experience has been good, it's built up my confidence and I'd recommend it to anyone. After uni, my long term dream is to own a gym. With the skills I've gained here, I think I could make it into a real success."

Apprentice Brandon Fulfils His Potential Whilst many people enrol directly on to an Apprenticeship after leaving school, others travel a different path before choosing to enrol. One such person is Brandon Odlum, 20. He tried A-Levels, a BTEC and an Electrician's course but quit after only a few months, deciding they weren't for him. However, Brandon eventually found his true calling when he enrolled on to a Level 2 Customer Service Apprenticeship. Brandon, who works at Matchwinners, said "Thanks to the help of Bolton College and my employer, I now have a career that I like. The Apprenticeship has helped me so much, learning whilst earning money is exactly what I wanted." Brandon's tutor added, "Brandon has excelled at work and made a great impression with his employers, so he's been offered a permanent position. He has a flair for business, and I'm sure that he's going to go far."

Chloe Walker Accounting AAT Apprenticeship Level 4 Working at Tailored Fire & Security Ltd "Some of my friends had attended accounting courses at Bolton College and they really recommended them. I've been here for three years now and I love the fact that everything I learn here /BoltonCollege

Jon’s a Reel Catch for Curley’s Fish Restaurant For hospitality worker Jon Kershaw, doing an Apprenticeship at Bolton College was a no-brainer. Jon, who is in the first year of his Apprenticeship, said "I chose to study here because the College has a very good reputation for Catering, so it was a logical choice to come here". Jon works at Curley's Dining Rooms in Horwich, where he is currently refining his hospitality skills. As well as picking up the know-how to succeed, Jon has built up a rapport with the regular clientele, a must for success in the hospitality industry. Jon's aims for the long-term are ambitious; after completing his Apprenticeship, he'd like to gain promotion and use his skills to ensure that the business continues to flourish. /BoltonCollege

Improving Mental Wellbeing The Mental Wellbeing Team offer a friendly and supportive environment for people who may experience mental health difficulties or want to support others.

David Shearer Computers for Beginners "The course was at New Bury so it was convenient to get to and it's a really friendly set-up. The tutor started with the basics then built up from there. I've been able to apply what I've learnt at home and also at work, it's really incresed my confidence." 34

Olaitan Aridegbe Office Skills Award Level 1 "I chose Office Skills to gain some qualifications. I already work, but I’m hoping this course will lead to promotion. I'd like to become a receptionist or even work in customer service. I'm really enjoying the course, the tutor is so lovely, she's helpful and very interactive. So far, we've built up some computer based knowledge and we're working on office related skills too. I've used Excel, Word and worked on spreadsheets. I'm only four weeks in, so I can't wait to see what else we're going to learn."

Serena Lister Beauty Therapy Diploma Level 2

Louise Kaye Beauty Therapy VRQ Diploma Level 3

"This course is so diverse, I love the variety of treatments that we do including nails, facials, make-up and eyebrow waxing. We are always doing something different in class.

"I'm super impressed with the whole set up of the salon in College, my tutors are fabulous and it's such a professional environment to learn in.

Eventually I'd love to have my own shop doing make-up and nails, and I’ve even considered branching out in to make-up for TV." 38

Next I'm going to move on to Level 4; I'd eventually like to do tattooing for facial disfigurements because I really want to help people restore their confidence." info@boltoncc.ac.uk

Rizwana Ahmed Beauty Therapy Techniques Advanced Diploma Level 4

"You can only usually do Levels 2 and 3 at other colleges, so the fact you can go right up to Level 5 at this College means the progression routes are good.

"I enjoy doing treatments with the clients, you learn a lot and the tutors are very supportive and knowledgeable.

I like that we cover lots of different units; I plan on focusing on one area and then specialising in this at a higher level - it's great, I've got the option to choose what I'm best at."

My longer term goal is to complete the Level 5. You can also study additional specialised qualifications which are great for developing my business."

"Following redundancy, I decided to enrol on this course; I'd love to become a full-time Beauty Therapist. I enjoy coming to College, the tutors are amazing. On the strength of my recommendations, some of my friends are going to enrol on the same course in September."

"I've been here for three years now, I started on Beauty Therapy Level 1, progressing to Level 2, and now I'm on Nail Technology Level 3. I love all of the different techniques and the tutors are such friendly people; they're always on hand to offer help if I need it. I'd like to use my skills to work in a salon or even become self-employed."

Maisy Smith Beauty Therapy Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Jem's Health & Beauty "I did Beauty Therapy Level 2 full-time, then I decided to do the Apprenticeship; it's allowed me to earn a wage whilst I'm learning, so it's the perfect situation to be in. I love my time in College, I've learnt so much and the salon we're taught in is really well-equipped, with all the latest products. In the future, I'd like to work on a cruise ship." /BoltonCollege

"I'd heard good things about Bolton College so I decided to come here. I'm currently on a work placement at Bolton at Home, which I'm really enjoying; the College has been so supportive.

"I work as a Quantity Surveyor and my company helped me to find this course. It’s given me a range of knowledge related to the construction industry, and the teaching is good. The facilities at College are great too, it's a really modern environment. Long term, I want to become a fully qualified Chartered Surveyor."

After this I'm considering an Apprenticeship, then I'd love to own my own business."

Jake Gingell Barbering VRQ Certificate Level 2 "I chose barbering because I wanted a profession that was practical rather than theoretical. I then discovered that barbering comes naturally to me and I'm really comfortable doing it. In class, I've enjoyed mastering different cuts and styles. Meeting new people and working with clients has been a big bonus and the teaching and facilities are perfect too. I've gained skills that have allowed me to fulfil my potential. My confidence has increased no end and now that I've gained a career, working at F&B Barbers in Chorley, I want to continue to add to my strengths and undertake further study." Luke's Success in the City Having already trained as a Barber, Luke Clayton enrolled on Barbering Level 3 to further enhance his shaving and modern barbering skills. Luke's progression up the career ladder has been swift; he started out barbering in Bolton before landing a dream role at the prestigious City Gent salon in Manchester city centre. Luke has fit his course around his full-time job, and attends College on Monday evenings to gain his Level 3 qualifications. Luke, 20, says "I really enjoy my job. Eventually, I'd like to go to university so that I can train to be a Barbering Teacher". Luke's commitment has been noted at College; he's already been recognised twice at the annual Adult & Community Awards and his tutor Mandy Molyneux says, "We're proud of Luke, he has great skills within his craft and he’s really excelled in his field". 50

Ijeoma Nebo Access to HE Diploma in Nursing & Midwifery "I cannot express how happy I am with Bolton College, I've learnt so much and gained a lot of confidence. Prior to this, I worked in the banking sector for four years but I wanted a career change. The classes are amazing; the tutor explains everything, answers questions with a smile and makes learning a lovely experience. Next, I'm off to university."

Jonathan Near Access to HE Diploma in Science "I worked in IT for 25 years so, initially, I was worried about getting back into education. I needn't have been - the College environment is really relaxed, the teaching is good and we even have a laugh. After this, I'm hoping to study Radiography at Lancaster University and I'd like to do a Masters at some point."

Ben Marsden Access to HE Diploma in Social Work "I wanted to go to university to train as a Social Worker, but didn't have the qualifications. I visited loads of different colleges in the area, but decided Bolton College would support me the best. The course has given me all the skills I need to be university ready; I'm learning the right things and picking up the right skills. I'd recommend this course; it opens up so many opportunities to get into social work."

Deana Fearne Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator) Level 3 "The Level 3 is a big jump from the Level 2, but it's been worthwhile. I've managed to juggle my family life with studying and surprised myself by completing some really challenging assignments. I've particularly enjoyed teaching the children and I've loved seeing them enjoy new experiences. In the future, I'd like to work in a hospital."

Adele Jackson Healthcare Play Specialism Foundation Degree "I travel in from York - this course is one of just four of its kind in the whole of the UK. I've enjoyed the practical side of things, getting out there with my mentor working in a hospital. In College, the tutors have been helpful and I've met some nice people. Long term, I'd like to be a community based Play Specialist."

College Collaborates with Bolton NHS Foundation Trust Bolton College works with over 3,000 employers in Bolton alone, and one of the biggest is the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust. One person to benefit from the collaboration is Carolyn McClure, 28, who completed a Level 3 Clinical Healthcare Apprenticeship at Bolton College. Most Apprenticeships follow a day-release structure but in Carolyn's case, all the training was delivered at the hospital. Carolyn says "I was able to apply what I learnt straight away. After the Apprenticeship I did an Access course and now I'm at Edge Hill University studying adult nursing. The Apprenticeship was a stepping-stone to further study and career progression".

Saffiya Ahmed Childcare Appprenticeship Level 2 Working at Little Angels Nursery "I've always had a preference for early years, so I started at College doing full-time Childcare Level 2. I preferred the hands-on part of the course and I really wanted to progress my learning whilst developing my career at the same time, so an Apprenticeship seemed like the next logical step. /BoltonCollege

For more information please call 01204 482 036 or email apprenticeships@boltoncc.ac.uk

I've been at Little Angels for three years now and I'm employed on a permanent contract. I love looking after the children, interacting with them and dealing with their parents too. In the long term, the Apprenticeship will help me to do whatever I want to do; I may decide to move into a school as a Teaching Assistant, or even take a Higher Education course." Anita Verkaria Engineering BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 "I studied hairdressing as part of my GCSEs but engineering was always what I wanted to do. I love how there's a mixture of different people on the course. Some people already have experience in engineering so they help out the other learners. The tutors are so supportive and their door is always open. In the long term, I want to do Electrical Engineering at university. A lot of people tend to go into mechanical but I want to stick with electrical and be different."

Motor Vehicle & Engineering

Bolton College Apprentices Land Jobs at Equipe Bolton College's tradition of sourcing quality Apprenticeship positions has benefited hundreds of learners this year, including eight Motor Vehicle students who progressed from full-time study to Apprenticeships. The students landed positions in North West branches of Equipe Tyre & Autocare. They will spend four days a week at Equipe and one day a

week in the College's STEM Centre, perfecting their skills before becoming fully qualified mechanics. Peter Alstead, Head of Motor Vehicle at the College said “We take great pride in finding quality placements for our apprentices, ensuring they have the very best start in the world of work. Billy Carberry, Area Manager at Equipe added “It's been a fantastic opportunity to partner up with Bolton College and take on these apprentices. I've been really impressed; if the lads continue to work hard they will go far. Apprentices are a valuable asset to the company, and its future, moving forward".

For more information please call 01204 482 036 or email apprenticeships@boltoncc.ac.uk

Joshua Hudson Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Apprenticeship Level 2 Working at Jon-Son Motors "This Apprenticeship really suits me because I wanted to spend more time doing hands-on jobs in the workshop, which is what I've always preferred; I didn't just want to sit in a classroom like I had at school. I'm leaning more towards the electronics and diagnostic side of mechanics. I want to focus on something that's niche and provide a service at the garage that other competitors can't, in order to meet the demands of the market and make a decent profit." /BoltonCollege

Ryan Sanderson Instructing Exercise & Fitness Apprenticeship Level 2 Working at The Strength Factory "The Apprenticeship has turned my hobby into a paid job. I used to study sport and take part in football coaching, but I wanted a change and the Apprenticeship was ideal. I was nervous at first but my confidence has really grown. Now, I'm happy to renew memberships and give advice about equipment. It's better than being in a classroom; rather than just writing about it, I'm actually doing it." 60

I've been offered a place at Liverpool Hope University, where I'm going to do a psychology degree with a view to doing a PGCE, before becoming a fully qualified teacher. Ruwayda Patel Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools Level 2 "The College is local so it made sense to come here. My tutor has been a really good teacher, so I've enjoyed the course. The College is nice too, it's friendly and the classrooms are great. I always feel comfortable here so it's a good environment to learn in. I've particularly loved working with children and being in the school environment so in the future I'm hoping to get a permanent placement in a school. I'd definitely recommend this course to others."
