Welcome to Art, Design & Media Whether you want to improve your watercolour skills or develop a portfolio of artwork to gain access to university, we have a class to suit your needs and aspirations. Every one of our Visual and Performing Arts courses is practical and hands-on, encouraging you to try out your ideas and gain new skills. Training in the arts allows you to explore your interests, develop confidence, discover new talents and enhance your creativity. All our Tutors are highly trained practitioners who bring a wealth of experience and creativity to their classes. Many exhibit and sell their own work so are able to encourage students to develop their confidence and abilities. Learning at the main Deane Road Campus takes place in state-of-the-art facilities and all students can access the College’s VLE (Moodle). Classes are also offered at our Community Learning Centres across Bolton.

Join us for a night of life drawing with a twist! Think corsets, feathers and bustles as our models bring you all the glamour, performance and spirit of the circus and theatre!

Our classes offer a structured life drawing environment, designed to give technical advice in key areas such as proportion, perspective, anatomy, line, gesture, tone and colour.

This course is for new and returning learners, and is intended to provide you with a variety of creative strategies and methods of approaching figurative drawing.

Participants are encouraged to use this knowledge as a basis through which to develop their own style, using a wide range of mediums and approaches.

Overview of the course

What can I expect to learn?

3D computer graphic modelling is used in a number of industries including product design, computer game creation and in animation films such as Toy Story. It’s an exciting and diverse subject with many applications.

• You can expect to learn to build basic 3D models

This 10 week course is a perfect introduction to the subject. You will use software called Blender, which is a free piece of software for both Macs and PCs. The ideas and concepts used by this programme are shared by many other 3D programmes, so will make it easy for you to transfer your skills to other software in the future.

What can I expect to learn?

In this course, you will learn about basic sewing techniques using a domestic sewing machine. The techniques will include basic stitch types, various seams and hems, darts, gathers, zip insertion and some embellishment.

You will learn how to thread and safely operate a domestic sewing machine to produce the basic techniques in sewing required to produce a simple sample skirt.

All these techniques will prepare you for the Dressmaking NCFE Level 1.

This 8 week ceramic course will give you the opportunity to access our excellent ceramic facilities here at Bolton College. This practical course is suitable for anyone who wishes to develop their enthusiasm for ceramics, whether you are a beginner or a more experienced learner.

The ceramics workshop will enable you to develop your creative skills and a personal approach to your ceramic work.

What can I expect to learn?

This course is aimed at new learners and is intended to provide you with the skills to produce and design your own stained glass masterpiece.

• How to safely handle and cut glass

We will teach you how to safely cut coloured glass and then join the pieces together. We cover both traditional leaded lights (windows) and the Tiffany copper foil technique (lamps).

What can I expect to learn?

Our Stained Glass Workshop is designed to allow learners at a range of different levels to practice and develop their skills.

How to adapt a pattern or design your own project, be it a simple sun catcher, a lamp, a new window for your house or even how to repair an existing window.

Running a period of 10 weeks we cover Tiffany style pieces, sun catchers, lampshades, traditional leaded lights, windows, door panels and glass painting. The courses are suitable for anyone with the desire to make something beautiful. You will gain a sense of achievement and create something unique and stunning to keep.

This course is meant for those students who have a good level of basic photography skills - including knowledge of settings such as aperture, speed, white balance etc. and would like to concentrate on developing specific macro and still-life photography techniques. This course is suitable for students who consider themselves beginners or that only have basic photography skills.

• Learn macro and still life photography tips including making the most of your camera settings and equipment required for situations such as working with different light sources and subjects. Subjects may include natural themes, man-made objects and abstraction. • Practice capturing macro and stilllife in classroom settings as well as in locations agreed with the tutor and the group • Processing images on the computer

This course is for students who are interested in learning about interior design techniques.

You can expect to learn more about:

You will be introduced to colour, shape, pattern and texture with a view to designing an interior space. You will generate and develop your own ideas, with guidance and feedback from the tutor. What can I expect to learn?

This course is aimed at both new and returning learners and is intended to provide you with the skills to produce your own printed textile samples.

• You can expect to learn a range of techniques such as colour research and colour mixing.

This course is for students who are interested in learning about surface pattern techniques. You will be introduced to colour, shape, pattern and texture with a view to designing and producing mini printed samples. Students will be expected to generate further ideas independently with guidance and feedback from the tutor. Overall you can expect to learn various techniques and design methods used within textile design. These include using computers, sketchbook development, mono printing and presentation skills.
