• Individual Animal Feed Efficiency Data ( RFI ) As leaders in the field of testing for feed efficiency, this is our 16th consecutive year of measuring individual animal Residual Feed Intake (RFI) or Net Feed Efficiency and Straight Feed Conversion. All R&R bulls have individual animal net feed efficiency and straight feed conversion data. This is also our 12th year for testing our complete heifer crop. • All Long Yearlings Virile bulls ready to cover lots of ground. They were “coasted” through their first winter, you can treat them rougher than spring yearling calves, and are slowly developed with lots of exercise plus they haven’t seen as much feed as full two year olds elsewhere. They aren’t picked over. • Performance Tested, Carcass Ultrasound Measured More years of data in more traits than anyone in the Canadian beef seedstock business. • Board until March 1. We’ll care for your purchases for a nominal $6 per day. We suggest you purchase insurance, though. • Delivery assistance. You tell us when and where you want them, and we’ll get it done for you. Don’t worry - we’ll do the legwork and get your bulls home at the lowest cost possible. • Guaranteed homozygous polled bulls. All are homozygous polled. Homozygous polled cattle will genetically dehorn every calf, even from horned cows. • Easy calving identified bloodlines. We know what our bulls, their siblings and their cow families have done in the past - no unpleasant surprises. • Guaranteed homozygous black bulls. We’ve designed them and paid the tab to DNA test them so you’ll be guaranteed a uniform all-black calf crop from non-diluter red or black cows. DNA tests that were requested to confirm were done at Neogen (formerly Igenity). Our bulls are free of the spotting and diluter genes. • None Held Back All our bulls are offered, with everyone getting fair chance to own them. None pre-sold, none consigned to other events, and none held back for only our own use. • Proven Sire Groups Not only do we have sire groups, but there are also other sets of closely related bulls to sire uniform calf crops in multiple bull cow herds. • DNA Marker Testing for Marbling, PMCH and other Carcass Traits. Several sires, dams, plus all our sale bulls for the past 14 years have had DNA Marker Profiles or individual trait DNA tests done helping us identify indicators of superior genetics for these carcass and meat quality traits. -2-

Welcome to a look at our annual bull sale offering, and thank you for considering using R&R Acres’ genetics. Although this is our 19th annual bull sale on our own, we decided to try some changes to the format hoping to make bull purchases here more convenient for both you and us. This year’s event will be by private treaty, not the traditional auction as in past years. This will still allow us to offer all our bulls to everyone at an equal chance, but will give bidders more time to make their choices and can either bid in person sale day or phone in bids as the private treaty day goes on. Again this year we have been extra hard on screening the bulls that end up in this sale. A new addition you will see are our first two purebred Angus bulls from the newest section of our program. As our high percentage of repeat customers have come to expect, we have again gathered “more data than anywhere else” to aid in your accurate and complete assessment of how these bulls could fit into your beef herd. Use the data - it works! If you have questions or want to discuss the bulls, give me a call or stop by anytime ahead of the private treaty sale day. You are welcome to come here to the ranch, or can place bids by phone on Saturday, January 18th between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Hopefully we can avoid the nasty blizzard weather we’ve hit the past two years! Randy

R&R Acres’ 2020 Private Treaty Bull Sale The Procedure: All the data and information on all our bulls is listed in the sale catalog, including two handy ranking pages at the back of the book to help you easily sort bulls for many different traits.

The Schedule:

On sale day, Saturday January 18, 2020, or anytime ahead of sale day you are welcome to come to the ranch to go through the sale bulls. I look forward to visiting with you about your bull needs, or answer any questions you might have.

10 a.m. Bulls on display. Bidding opens.

All bulls have base prices listed in the sale catalog, as well as “buy now” prices for all but two bulls which will have an open-end top price. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. anyone can place bids on bulls or “lock up” their choice by meeting the “buy now” price listed. Bids will be gathered on a “First-come First-served” basis and tracked on a big board in the sale barn. If you get out-bid (and are not here in person) I will call you to let you know the price situation and then you can raise your bid if you want to, or place a bid on a different bull. At 3 p.m., bidding will close and I will call you to let you know the results. After the bidding process is complete, we will send an invoice to succcessful bidders, bulls can be loaded out after settlement, or we will help arrange care and/or transportation in the days ahead. Mortality and injury insurance will be available for purchase from our usual agent, Cheryl Brown, if you want to insure them. -3-

Why use an “R&R” Bull? 1. More Information Than Anywhere Else! • We do all we can to design bulls that are a predictable package to help increase your profit and eliminate your problems. • No other beef seedstock supplier in North America has been supplying all the data we have. 1. Individual Animal Feed Efficiency - our entire bull calf crop, for the past 16 years and also all the heifers for the past 12 years. 2. Igenity DNA Tenderness Score 3. Carcass Ultrasound Scans 4. Homozygous Polled Status 5. Coat Color Status 6. Accurate, complete performance data 7. Superior Docility EPDs 8. Complete EPDs with accuracies. 9. Semen tested - ready to work. 10. Actual gestation lengths 11. We measure every calf for 18 traits before the top end is offered as a breeding bull. 12. Many years of DNA tests for Leptin (associated with growth, fat deposition, marbling). 13. Many years of DNA tests for PMCH (associated with tenderness and marbling). 2. Long yearling bulls. These bulls will handle more cows than hard fed yearlings. We evaluate our bulls more intensely than others for performance, feed efficiency, structure and docility in our goal of providing sound, user-friendly bulls. They have been slowly developed to last for years, just like their heifer mates retained in our herd that can produce well into their teens.

3. Superior proven genetics. I research all breeds and cattle of all kinds to be up-to-date in my search for superior, proven genetics to incorporate into the progression of the R&R Acres’ herd. We aim to be a leader in beef genetics - knowing what is needed in the beef industry’s future, not only just what is happening today. It has been interesting to see other prominent seedstock suppliers now finally doing what we did 15-20 years ago....and thinking they are doing something new and innovative. 4. Whole Herd Enrollment We report performance data on our entire calf crops to the

breed associations in an attempt to enhance the accuracy of our EPDs and optimize the information you can use to help select your seedstock. We print all the EPDs and accuracies none hidden like you see elsewhere. 5. We’ve invested heavily into the latest technology. To do the best job in designing beef cattle that increase profitability and sustainability, we choose to use fact, not fiction, and sound science, not mere opinion. As beef industry leaders in gathering useful data, we’ve spent a whole lot of time, effort and dedication to first learn about new methods of identifying the differences in cattle, and

my brothers and I started in the early day Limousin business as well as raising purebred Hampshire hogs, owning and operating the Canadian Limousin magazine promoting and merchandizing other people’s cattle for 20 some years, and now expanding our herd with the “right kind” of Limousin, Simmental and Angus cattle. 9. Preparing for the Future Our dedication to combine the best traits of the “right kind” of Limousin, Angus and Simmental into our “Beefmaker” Bulls and “Milkmaid” Females and also eliminate the bad traits of these breeds has worked very well. But to maintain our leadership role in designing beef cattle genetics, we are also well into the plan to tackle the “hard-to-measure” traits. The future will reward cattlemen from “pasture to plate” for cattle that can supply necessary traits not only for the cow-calf producer and cattle feeder, but also meet demands of the packer, retailer and probably most importantly, the consumer who expects a quality eating experience first time, every time, all the time. We are one of the very, very few in the world that are tackling the genetics to supply superior feed efficiency, adequate marbling with tremendous percent lean meat yield, and genetically influenced superior meat tenderness. 10. All bulls offered at auction. No bulls are sold before our annual bull sale and none are saved for other events. Everyone has an equal chance at our very best, offered at a fair public auction. Price ranges for everyone, but as a whole have been at darn reasonable prices compared to other places. There are always bargains, especially at our sale being one of the very earliest of the bull sale season. We invite you to either start a positive experience using R&R Acres’ genetics, or if you have already used our bulls, to continue utilizing our research and data. Join us in improving not only our own herds, but also the beef business as a whole in an attempt to keep consumers eating and enjoying more beef at a reasonable, profitable price.

then spent considerable money over the past years in using the GrowSafe feed efficiency test system, DNA tests, Igenity DNA profiles, etc. to compile this data ,stack the pedigrees generation after generation with the superior genetics, and also eliminate the ones that don’t work. Use our information to make more confident choices...and to avoid mistakes. 6. Follow the poultry, swine and dairy industries. If we really want to be progressive, futuristic thinking beef seedstock designers, we need to be eying the progressive genetic designers of the other protein meat industries - our real competitors. The leaders in the poultry, swine and dairy businesses all use data to make informed decisions - and it works - that’s why they are so far ahead of the beef business and continuing to make rapid, steady progress every year in feed efficiency, growth rate, meat yield, reducing cost of production, reproduction rate, etc. 7. Docility Is #1. We’re proud of the many comments we receive about how calm our bulls are. Stacking the pedigrees with only top Docility EPD sires works. Whether they are Limousin, Simmental or Angus, superior Docility EPDs are essential...and believe me, it’s hard to find new sires that are good enough to continue our quest. 8. Seedstock Experience Our family has been in the seedstock business for over 100 years, so we “see the whole picture” and we know what is expected to earn your business and keep it for the long term. Grandpa Bollum had draft horses, he and Dad had Shorthorns,

Our 16 years of experience of individual animal feed efficiency testing has taught us many things, including there is a huge difference among cattle... and you certainly can not tell them apart simply by looking at them! Feed Efficiency is 40% heritable. This set of bulls is 30% better than industry average. Use the data to improve your calf crops and your cow herds. Feed efficient cows eat less every day for the 1015 years she’s in the herd.

Tenderness is one of the consumers’ top requirements for an enjoyable eating experience, but nobody else in the seedstock business is doing anything to attain it. We aim to make our beef predictably tender - right from the start - genetically predictably tender - every time.

Once you start a replacement heifer in your cow herd, the more years she stays producing, the more profitable your cow herd is. The R&R Acres’ herd is built around well proven sires that are Breed Trait Leaders for Stayability EPDs (number of years a cow stays in the herd). Many of our cows produce well into their teens, and are probably treated rougher than you care for your own cows. -14-

Residual Feed Intake (RFI) Data Why measure feed efficiency? The cost of feed is second only to fixed costs in importance to the profitability of commercial beef operations and 7075% of the total dietary energy cost in beef production is used for maintenance, including maintenance of the dam. In addition, a 5% improvement in feed efficiency could have an economic impact four times greater than a 5% improvement in average daily gain. Defining net feed efficiency Net feed efficiency or net feed intake (NFI) or Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its expected feed requirements for maintenance and growth. Thus, it is the variation in feed intake that remains after the requirements for maintenance and growth have been removed. Like a golf score, a lower value is better and indicates an efficient animal. Considerable variation exists between individual animals within breeds or genetic strains in RFI. This infers that substantial progress can be made in RFI or feed efficiency since the heritability of the

trait is approximately 40%. The Test The main purpose is to use this new electronic technology to identify feed efficient breeding bulls. Ultimately we can use this information and superior genetics to also improve the efficiency of the cowherd and feeder cattle in order to reduce unit costs of production.

Each pen is fitted with a GrowSafe System for automatically monitoring individual animal feed intake whenever it comes and goes from the feeder via an eartag button. The R&R Acres’ Cattle With 16 years of data compiled from our entire bull calf crops and 12 years of heifer crops we have identified the superior individuals, sire groups and dams. There is a difference!

The R&R Acres’ bulls are the only full sets of 1 owner bulls in Canada to sell with complete Net Feed Efficiency data and straight feed to gain ratio data since 2004-2005.

Performance Tested Long Yearlings

We have planned a management and feeding program to develop our bulls combining a longer growing time period, with a ration designed with bulls’ longevity in mind. We do not creep feed our calves, so we can get a fully accurate assessment of the dam’s milking ability which is reflected in her calf’s weaning weight. Our summer and fall-born bulls are “coasted” through their first year without heavy, hot feed that many bull calves receive elsewhere. They will not have big, fat weaning and yearling weights on paper, but rather receive a lighter ration that allows expression of their growth traits without hurting them. The performance test growing ration (fed in the same typical commercial feedlot environment as you feed your own cattle out in), is a silage based high roughage diet. After the 80 day test period, the bulls were moved to a pasture through the Fall and Winter where they were allowed plenty of exercise. Big round hay bales and a “no-starch” pelleted ration is offered when the grass runs out.We have found this to be ideal to get bulls ready for service, but not overfat. Their heifer mates are on the same plan. These properly developed fall yearling aged bulls will cover more ground than young spring yearlings, and just plain haven’t seen as much feed as most full two year olds.

Top Ranking Bulls In Economically Important Traits 2020 Sale Bulls The summer 2018 born calves received no creep feed while on their mothers, were “coasted” through their first winter and went on feed efficiency and performance test in May for a 90 day period where they received a low starter “salvage feed” straw-based silage ration through yearling age. Due to this, our average daily gains and our feed to gain ratios were not as good as usual in past years.Because of this they will not have big, fat weaning and yearling weights as at other bull suppliers. They returned to R&R Acres where they ran on grass and later in the Fall received free choice round bales of straw and a pelleted “no starch” ration developed by Country Junction Feeds, Wetaskiwin, Alta. proven to be best for their gut, feet and longevity.
