Plaaswerkers betoog by die Zetler-pakstoor in November 2012.

Glenwill Treu from Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch was part of the first cohort of Allan Gray Scholars graduating from the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Scholarship programme in a ceremony held recently at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town. The theme of the graduation ceremony was Celebrating Pioneers, which was appropriate as the 12 bright and ambitious grade 12 pupils who were accepted into the programme in 2008 are the foundation’s first ever cohort of scholars to successfully complete and graduate from the programme since its inception. All 12 Allan Gray scholars have achieved bachelor’s passes, making them eligible for further studies at university. “The scholarship selection process is rigorous and the programme challenging; but these pupils have excelled in their studies and faced the challenges presented to them with admirable courage and determination,” said Anthony Farr, CEO of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation. “We are immensely proud of what they have achieved.” Other pupils that graduated are: Aseza Matanzima, Sabelwa Matikinca and Kayla Miller from Collegiate Girls High School in Port Elizabeth; Karabo Tshehle, Lwazi Volsak, Lyle Timotheus and Tyron Sneewe from Selborne College in East London and Ada Bentsela, Keneilwe Nkholi, Mbalenhle Ngobese and Nonkululeko Sibanyoni from St Cyprian’s School in Cape Town. Two of these scholars were successfully awarded the Allan Gray Fellowship for university. The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation supports and develops talented young Southern Africans who

have the potential to become entrepreneurial leaders who can make a valuable difference to our country. Developing high-impact leaders is, however, only the means to an end: the ultimate purpose of the foundation is to make a real and enduring difference not only to the lives of those that they have invested in, but also to the country and the region at large. This is the core purpose and the vision of the foundation: to make a long-term positive impact that liberates the possibility of a great Southern Africa. The scholarship was created to broaden the pool of eligible applicants into the foundation’s fellowship programme which is aimed at grade 12 pupils and firstyear university students. The scholarship is open to pupils who show potential to excel academically, who have the desire to fully engage in available opportunities as well as those who demonstrate financial need. Scholarship recipients receive comprehensive financial support, and are given access to entrepreneurial and personal development programmes as well as mentorship opportunities to ensure their continued progress. “It is the scholarship’s vision to develop a community of young entrepreneurial-minded pupils so that scholars will ultimately become Allan Gray Fellows,” says Farr. “These scholars are pioneers in that they have forged a new path for the next group of scholars who will follow in their footsteps. Through their future actions and endeavours, we believe that these individuals will continue to demonstrate the core purpose of the foundation, through making a positive impact on the social and economic fabric of Southern Africa.”

RUNNING CLINIC WITH ZOLA BUDD: Fifty lucky Anna Foundation farm children recently had the opportunity to attend a running clinic in Stellenbosch with legendary barefoot Olympian, Zola Budd. Learners displaying a talent for, or showing potential for running were chosen from each of the Boland farms on which the non-profit works. To kick off the afternoon (and much to their delight), each child was fitted with a brand new pair of Newton running shoes of their own. During the clinic the children were shown a variety of core-strengthening exercises necessary for runners to develop, and copied fast-paced leg drills as demonstrated by Zola. Through the Anna Foundation children learned a great deal from the running legend, picking up many valuable running tips and pointers which they will put into practice at the next local fun run they attend. United still in the lead Manchester City hit back to draw 2–2 at home to Liverpool in an engaging game on Sunday but the result left Manchester United with a daunting nine-point lead at the top of the English Premier Soccer League. After City old boy Daniel Sturridge cancelled out Edin Dzeko’s opener for the hosts, a Steven Gerrard thunderbolt gave Liverpool a glimpse of victory, only for Sergio Aguero to level moments later. While Liverpool can take heart from a bold display that followed their 2–2 draw at Arsenal in mid-week, City are left to contemplate the unenviable task of reeling in United.

“We didn’t play well. In the last month we played well in all the games, but we were so nervous in this game and I don’t know why,” said City manager Roberto Mancini, who refused to concede defeat in the title race. “Is the title race over? No. Seven or nine points (deficit) don’t change. I think we can recover it,” he said. Earlier, Tottenham Hotspur lost Jermain Defoe to injury but won 1–0 at West Bromwich Albion through a fine Gareth Bale goal. Victory took them to within a point of third-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table, while West Brom stay in ninth place. –
