Marais crowned Mountain Warrior Challenge champion

After two days of challenging trail running at the Mountain Warrior Trail Run Challenge presented by Brooks, multi sport athlete Stuart Marais claimed victory when he completed the 38 km Jonkershoek Sky Run on Saturday and the 25 km Simonsberg Challenge on Sunday in an impressive combined time of 6 hours, 12 minutes and 54seconds. According to Marais the Mountain Warrior Challenge was fantastic. “I really enjoyed taking part. Running against Nicholas Rupanga today in the Simonsberg Challenge was great. Nicholas would get away from me on the climbs, but then I’d make up time on the flat sections. Although I really enjoyed today’s single track, my favourite part of the event is still having run in the snow on Day One. We are really blessed to be able to run in such an amazing area. I will definitely be back next year,” says Marais. Samuel Holtzkampf was placed second in the Mountain Warrior Challenge, while Allan McCreadie finished third. The Mountain Warrior Challenge formed part of the Mountain Warrior Trail Run Festival presented by Brooks.

as die man s’n.

Eric Horn by 082 426 0270 of 022 9421560 of e-pos na recovery@chalom.co.za.

The Sasol museum will host the exhibition Lingering Absences: Hearing Landscape through Memory from

9 to 20 September. This exhibition is curated by Lizabé Lambrechts and Ernst van der Wal. The exhibition offers a visual and auditory perspective on the dynamics of opera production in a time and in places subject to involuntary removals of coloured communities in Cape Town. The Eoan Group was founded in 1933 in District Six, Cape Town, and devel-

oped to include an amateur opera company that produced the first fullscale opera performances in South Africa. Presenting both physical and lost localities, as well as imagined, political, personal, bureaucratic and cultural landscapes, this exhibition investigates the various layers of history and memory that consolidated the Eoan Group’s complex legacy.

All these presentations are offered free of charge due to financial support by the Leverhulme Trust. Donations at the door are welcome. Proceeds will go towards the ConCourt art collection. Wild Clover celebrates spring with a family braai Celebrating the arrival of spring, Wild Clover is hosting a special edition of their newly launched Sunday market. On Sunday 15 September, the Wild Clover family market in Stellenbosch will focus on all things to do with one of South Africa’s favourite past-times, the family braai. This is a unique opportunity for getting Capetonians in the mood ahead of National Braai Day, allowing you to stock up on your favourite flavours and be inspired with new ideas for impressing your friends

and family with your outdoor cooking skills. The braai-themed market will also include special friend and guest, of Masterchef and Kitchen Cowboy fame, Peter Goffe-Wood, who might be performing a fun demo of his favourite braai recipe at Wild Clover. The market starts at 10:00 and the usual Wild Clover activities, attractions for children, restaurant and brewery will also be open. There will be activities for the whole family to indulge in a Sunday spring outing – complete with live music.

Set in the gorgeous Simonsberg mountain area of the Cape winelands, only half an hour from Cape Town and 20 minutes from Durbanville, this Sunday market offers a delightful selection of things to browse, buy and eat as well as crafts and braai-inspired goodies for gifts. The farm itself is also known for its onsite brewery and roastery, with both the craft beers and the Quaffee brand of roasted beans available to purchase. So on 15 September, whether you want to take part in an exciting dis-

play of braai skills and showmanship by sharing your recipes and braai ideas or simply delight in new tastes and that oh-so-familiar Sunday smell of the family braai fire, visit Wild Clover. (More information: www.facebook.com/WildCloverFarm and www.wildclover.co.za.) To enter the Wild Clover braai competition: Submit your favourite braai recipe (and a photograph if you can), along with your name and phone number, to info@wildclover.co.za by no later than midday Thursday 12 September 2013.

If you are one of the five selected semi-finalists with your recipe, you’ll be invited to a cook-off at the Wild Clover braai day hosted by Wild Clover farm on Sunday 15 September as part of the family braai-themed Sunday market. The semi-finalists will be chosen by chef extraordinaire and Masterchef judge Peter GoffeWood, and all five will receive special braai hampers. On the day of the cook-off, the winner will receive a weekend getaway for two at Wild Clover Cottages as well as braai equipment ahead of National Braai Day.

Rudge voeg by ’n mens se foon is in baie opsigte jou belangrikste besitting.

Abba launches ‘Too Smart to Start’ Abba, a local Badisa non-profit organisation that specialises in tackling substance abuse issues, will be hosting two ground-breaking communitybased awareness-raising events, entitled “Too Smart to Start”, for the first time in September. The aim of the ‘”Too Smart to Start” days is to help educate communities in Cloetesville and Ida’s Valley about the issues surrounding drug and alcohol misuse.

“Substance misuse blights local communities and generates all manner of social problems. “Raising awareness of the impact of drug and alcohol abuse and where individuals affected by such issues can go to get help is vital if we are to build healthy, sustainable communities now and into the future,” said project coordinator, Cath Everett. The first ‘Too Smart to Start’ Day is scheduled to take place in the Lückhoff

school hall in Ida’s Valley on the morning of Wednesday 18 September and will be attended by Grade 11 pupils and their parents/carers. The second ‘Too Smart to Start’ day is to take place in the Eikestad Hall in Cloetesville from 10:00 until 13:00 on Monday 23 September, during the school holidays. All those attending the “Too Smart to Start” days will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to financially survive your teenager’s matric dance Matric dance season is drawing near and it can end up being a costly exercise for parents with pressure to spend on an expensive dress or tuxedo, make-up and hair, afterparties and even luxury cars to attend the event. Many parents find themselves torn between wanting to give their teenager a beautiful outfit with all the extras and also not wanting to blow hundreds or worse, becoming indebted. “As a parent you want to give your child the kind of matric sendoff that is memorable and one that they deserve,” says Eunice Sibiya, head of Consumer Education at FNB. “They’ve worked hard throughout the year, but the costs of outfits, travel, after-parties and even breakfasts the next morning all add up.” Sibiya stresses that a matric dance can still be special without ruining your bank balance. “There are a number of measures you can put in place to help ease the financial load of a matric dance, starting with a budget.” Every household should have a budget to plan for everyday expenses, so a budget for a special event like a matric dance should be added to this as early as possible.

“A matric dance is not just about the clothes, there are other costs involved such as, hair, make-up, shoes, travel and even photography. Remember to prioritise what is important and what not. Decide how much money will be set aside and, most importantly, stick to your budget.” It is also not unreasonable to expect your teenager to contribute financially toward the day by helping with chores around the house or neighbourhood to earn money to contribute. Involve your teenager in the budgeting and costing process. “Most teenagers won’t have an idea of how much the event is going to cost their parents. If they are involved you can explain why they can’t have that pair of shoes or latest videogame, as you are saving for the special occasion. This will also help with the bigger picture of financial management and instilling an entrepreneurial spirit in your child.” Dresses, tuxedos and suits can also be very expensive when bought. Sibiya suggests hiring an outfit, as it is, after all, only for one night. “There are a number of places you could visit to hire an outfit. Just do some research. You could also choose a less expensive outfit and

make it more exciting with accessories.” There’s also no need to spend a lot of money on a hair and make-up artist. Either do practice runs before the day, or, find a friend or family member with this special talent to turn her into Cinderella for the night. “When it comes to travel, you can organise a nice car without having to pay. Ask around, perhaps someone’s dad has a really nice car, and your teenager and friends could travel to the venue together. If that is not possible, explain the additional cost of hiring a car to your child and ask him or her to get a lift with a friend, or just drop them off yourself.” Once your daughter is done with her dress, and it is not going to be worn again, why don’t you pass on the good deed and donate it a charity? The most important thing to remember when it comes to matric dance is to have clean and safe fun. “It’s the culmination of a twelveyear schooling career, and if your child has worked hard, they deserve to have a memorable night of good fun. It’s important to keep your eye on what’s important and not to get swept up by the hype and competitiveness.”
