Register early childhood centres As part of a project to register all Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, Albert Fritz, the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, visited several of these centres in the province. “We currently fund 1 060 ECDs, but despite a major registration campaign in 2011 as many ECDs still remain unregistered and are therefore not able to access the subsidy of R15 per child per day. This does not necessarily mean that they are operating illegally, but that their registration process is not yet completed,” said Fritz. Fritz recently met with an ECD forum in Mitchell’s Plain to hear first-hand what the stumbling blocks are and how government can help. “Many of the stumbling blocks or delays in their registration have to do with local government requirements, as they relate to health and safety. “I have subsequently met with the City of Cape Town and we are negotiating an agreement with the City to relax some of the provisions for compliance, without compromising the safety of our children and teachers,” he said. In the meantime, they have

Minister Albert Fritz asked the fully registered ECDs to reach out to those unregistered ones in their communities in a bid to bring them on board and up to speed, not only in terms of health and safety requirements, but also sharing their learning materials and curricula – similar to a mentoring process. “This is currently working very well in Mitchell’s Plain, where some ECDs have even formed smaller ‘hubs’ so as to work closer with either new or existing ECDs who are still in the process of get-

ting their registration sorted. “It is not about competing for government funding, but rather building bridges so that we can work collectively to improve learning, stimulation and development of our young children.” Fritz plans on visiting several more communities across the province. Dedicated ECD help desks are also being set up at local social development offices in a bid to inform and assist the ECD centres that are still in the process of completing their registration. “This exercise is not just about chasing numbers. Apart from the focus on statutory compliance, there is a huge focus on the quality of learning programmes offered at the ECD centres. “To this end we have since last year trained over 800 ECD practitioners to administer a proper curriculum that will help develop the cognitive, language and numeracy skills of young children. “I want to ensure that through the opportunities extended by the Western Cape Government for early childhood development, we prepare and produce the best equipped learners in the country.”

Learning about the effects of drugs A group Grade 10 pupils has learned from experience that while drugs and alcohol may seem cool to take initially, the long-term impact is anything but. To help the class of 20 pupils understand the effects of potentially dangerous substances, Vision AfriKa class coordinator, Zukisa Xegwana, used experiential learning techniques to raise awareness and make the issues appear more real. “People talk about these things in school, church and on TV, but it seems remote and the pupils ignore it. So I wanted them to experience it a little bit for themselves.” As a result, at the start of the session, he began by spraying the Vision AfriKa classroom with insect spray. He had asked one of four student volunteers from Stellenbosch University to stand in front of the door to prevent the pupils from leaving

and another to move in front of the window to stop it from being opened. When the pupils became anxious and started to scream, Xegwana put the insect spray can down and began to spray air freshener instead. At first, they were happy with the change, but by the time, he moved onto the third can, they were screaming and asking him to stop again. Xegwana explained the rationale behind the move: “The reason I sprayed the Insect spray was that I wanted to show them how people react towards well-known dangerous substances. Using the air freshener was then meant to show how people respond to apparently harmless ones.” The idea was that, although the class enjoyed smelling the air freshener at first, the experience became negative when Xegwana overdid it and sprayed too much.

“It’s very similar to when people start smoking and drinking. It seems cool to them at first, but they’re not thinking about the long-term repercussions,” he said. Next Xegwana asked the pupils to organise themselves into small groups to discuss the experience. After their findings had been presented to the rest of the class, he introduced “substance abuse” as a formal topic and linked it to what they had felt about the initial spraying activity. When asked what substances they would be afraid to even try, most said tik, cocaine and mandrax, which Xegwana compared to insect spray. The substances that they considered cool, however, were cigarettes and cider drinks, which he equated to the insidious effects of the air freshener. Jy kan maklik vasstel of jy as kieser geregistreer is.

Elke stem is belangrik.

New centre to help unemployed Unemployment is one of the biggest problems in South Africa, which is why Lulaway is an important link between people looking for jobs and companies looking for staff. Lulaway Job Centre plans to combat unemployment in Stellenbosch and surrounding areas using the Lulaway Online recruitment platform. The platform provides corporates with direct access to entry level and semi-skilled workers. Lulaway has recently licenced Wow Internet Café in Stellenbosch to help combat unemployment in Stellenbosch and surrounding areas. The Job Centre will pride itself in offering hope for a better (gainfully employed) future for the youth in these areas and will ensure a high success rate in both the screening and job interviews that follow with well-known employers including McDonalds, Dis-Chem Pharmacies, and Bidvest Prestige. The recruitment centre will provide a host of work possibilities,

which would not have otherwise been accessible to the communities. Considering that many people cannot afford to travel to the city and recruitment agencies or even know how to put a curriculum vitae together, Wow Internet Café will give them the opportunity of showcasing their skills and getting onto an employment database at a minimal fee of R65. The job seeker will receive a printed CV after he or she has completed the online registration process. The Lulaway system takes the efficient internet job-board to the next level by creating a vibrant platform with Wow Internet Café on the ground. Job seekers can visit Wow Internet Café, situated at 38 Libertas Building, corner of Andringa and Banghoek Roads, Stellenbosch, where consultants will construct a CV, scan relevant documentation and take photographs.

Real Oktober Fest at Blaauwklippen The Blaauwklippen Family Market will be hosting their annual Oktober Fest. The Songscape Beerfest Trio will be performing live oompah music on the day. Apart from all the usual prepared food that the market offers, some additional German cuisine will also be on offer. The Market starts at 10:00 - 15:00 and entry is free. For more info 0 084 608 6325

Applicants are put though rigorous screening and testing, designed to test skills, knowledge, aptitude and corporate fit. This information is filtered through an online database and professionally presented in an accessible and usable format. An SMS facility is then provided to employers to communicate with applicants individually or en masse at the touch of a button. Contrary to some reports and statistics, we, here on the ground, believe that at least 50% of the youth are unemployed in Stellenbosch and surrounding areas. Gauteng’s Department of Social Development has fully backed the Lulaway concept and has thrown its full support behind the Lulaway project. For more information visit their centre on the corner of Andringa and Banghoek Roads. Phone Kyu on 072 878 8878 or visit www.lulaway.co.za.

US blinddoek-maaltyd Om geblinddoek te eet is geen grap nie, hoewel sommige mense wat Dis-Maties se Dinner in the Dark Donderdag (17 Oktober) bygewoon het, se vertellings oor hul ervaring die ander gaste laat skater het. Dis-Maties, ’n vereniging by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) wat ondersteuning bied aan studente met gestremdhede op kampus, het die geleentheid by De Volkskom-

buis aangebied. Daar is nagenoeg 378 studente met gestremdhede geregistreer by die US.

October is Arthritis Month – there is help ALETTA VAN DER WATT October is World Arthritis Awareness Month, but why dedicate a whole month for a disease that only older people get? Although it is a common perception, arthritis is actually a catch-all phrase for a group of over 150 different diseases that can strike anyone from babyhood, through the teenage and adult years, as well as older people. Most people connect the idea of arthritis to older people, but that is because Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritis disease and is the one suffered by a very high proportion of people as they get older. It comes about when the cartilage between the joints wears down, causing friction of the bones of the joint, resulting in pain and inflammation. It’s also caused by joint damage from overuse through cer-

tain sports, or from a lifestyle of smoking or insufficient exercise leading to obesity and weak muscle strength. Other forms of arthritis include gout, which is quite common, especially here in the Winelands with all the good living we have on our doorstep. It is caused by too much uric acid in the system forming crystals that are deposited in the joints, often the big toe, causing excruciating pain. Luckily gout can largely be controlled by reducing foods with purines such as red meat and too much red wine, and with medication. There can be quite a significant genetic factor involved which would lead to more severe forms of gout. That still leaves about 150 other diseases. Almost all other arthritis illnesses are caused by a malfunction of the auto-immune system for unknown reasons, although it’s possible that genetics, stress and

emotional trauma of losing the carefree childhood everyone dreams of for their children. If you think you suffer from one of these diseases, the first step is to consult your general practitioner or attend the local clinic, who will prescribe basic pain and anti-inflammatory medication. Remember to ask what the side effects might be. However, be warned that very few GPs have adequate training in dealing with more complex forms of arthritis, so it’s a good idea, if you are still concerned, to ask for a referral to a rheumatologist. We are very fortunate to have a top rheumatology practice in Die Boord, run by rheumatologist Professor Helmuth Reuter and his team. There are excellent medications today that can make a huge difference, some of which may only be prescribed by a rheumatologist. The Helderberg Hospital runs a

certain severe viral infections may activate one of these diseases in susceptible people. Auto-immune arthritis diseases lead to the body’s own defences turning against the cells in the joints, resulting in serious inflammation, general malaise, severe unrelenting pain and eventual deformity. About 1 in 100 people will develop one of these diseases, the most common being rheumatoid arthritis. More women than men fall victim to these diseases, although one of them, ankylosing spondylitis, is most common among young men, where the spine gradually stiffen to resemble bamboo. Children too get juvenile idiopathic arthritis. This disease is very similar to rheumatoid arthritis, although children show a number of variations. These children suffer terribly, not only from severe pain, swelling and increasing disability, but also from the

DUISENDE BY IMPI: Sowat 4 000 deelnemers het opgedaag vir die jaarlikse New Balance Impi Challenge wat die afgelope naweek by Lievland en Wiesenhof buite Stellenbosch aangebied is. Deelnemers moes verskeie hindernisse oor ’n roete van 18 km of 12 km oorkom. FOTO: CHERIE VALE, NEWSPORT MEDIA

FOTO’S: EUNICE VISAGIE

Keep stress under control during exams With the exams around the corner, you may already feel the pressure. “Don’t let the looming exams turn you into a nervous wreck. Take a deep breath and follow these tips,” says Monique Harrisberg, CEO of The Voice Clinic, situated in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. There are ways to make your life less frantic during this period so that you can perform at your best. Remember, cramming – an exam trade mark – is not going to do your brain or nerves any favour. “That’s why it makes sense to start planning for your exams as

soon as you receive your exam timetable,” says Harrisberg. Determine the amount of work you have to cover, the time that it may take you to do so and set up a study schedule. “Your best bet is to set four weeks aside for studying and two weeks for revision. This will give you ample time to internalise your study material and ask for help with difficult subjects or topics. Divide your study material for each subject into bite-sized chunks and allocate them to specific hours or days on your schedule. Although tempting, don’t make your least favourite subjects your last priority.” Plan your time, draw up a realis-

tic schedule and stick to it. Include some relaxation as it is not healthy to have your nose in your books all the time. Break up your time with short breaks. Don’t be unrealistic. You have a good idea of what you are capable of. Being realistic about your results will help prevent you from being disappointed. Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs that are not the way to deal with your stress right now. Also try not to drink too much coffee. The caffeine won’t help you to concentrate. Revise methodically; simply reading long swathes of text is not going to help you remember facts

and figures. Write out important dates, facts or passages. Use lots of coloured pens and underline key phrases. Go back over these notes a day later and a week after that. Your memory will be better and you will feel more confident. Test yourself or get someone to test you on your notes. Regular testing means that you remember facts better. Any gaps in your knowledge can be picked up in good time and that makes the actual exam a lot less stressful Stick post-it’s with key facts and phrases on these around your room. After a while these facts will sink in. Ignore your friends, not entirely

of course. Don’t use them as a benchmark. Know yourself and what you have to do – you are in this for yourself. There is a great source of support available. Ask a teacher if you don’t understand a particular topic. Remember, exercise is a great way to give yourself a break. A 15minute jog or a brisk walk is all you have to do. Top football talent at High Schools Cup finals The final matches of the Stellenbosch High Schools Cup are set to take place at Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium on Saturday, 26 October. The tournament – which was launched on 4 September this year – has pitted the leading high school football teams from the Stellenbosch area against each other in the contest to claim top honours in Saturday’s finals. Schools which participated in the tournament this year include Luckhoff High School, Cloetesville High School, Makapula High School, Kayamandi High School, Hottentots Holland High School,

Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenzicht High School and Kylemore High School. The line-up for the final matches on 26 October is as follows: •Boys under 17 final: Makapula vs Luckhoff •Girls under 19 final: Luckhoff vs Cloesteville •Boys under 19 final: Luckhoff vs Cloesteville. The schools taking part will arrive from 09:30 onwards, with the opening ceremony scheduled for 10:30. The first matches will commence at 11:00, and the closing ceremony will take place at 16:00. “The aim of the tournament is to stimulate youth football devel-

opment within the broader Stellenbosch community and to foster deeper relationships between the university and these communities,” says Anita Nel, Senior Director: Innovation and Business Development at Stellenbosch University (SU) and CEO of Innouvs. The university is spearheading a Football Development Programme which aims to invest in the development of football skills within the communities surrounding Stellenbosch, and to create an elite football environment at the University. A recent partnership concluded between SU and three-times Premiership champions SuperSport

United has further cemented the university’s role in South African football development. The Stellenbosch High Schools Cup follows the inaugural Maties Football Holiday Programme hosted by SU from 24 June to 12 July this year. During the programme, 60 players from the Maties Football Club, as well as surrounding community club teams, were given the opportunity to gain valuable football and life skills, and to benefit from state of the art assessment equipment. “We are convinced that the future of South African football lies in Stellenbosch – we are grooming the stars of the future,” adds Nel.

The University has partnered with ForwardZone, South Africa’s premier football management company to execute the development programme. “We are proud to be involved in this initiative which creates various opportunities for communities and future football stars,” says Ashley Kotzin from ForwardZone. ) For more information relating to the Stellenbosch High Schools Cup finals, as well as the SU Football Development Programme, please contact Warren Engelbrecht at warrene@sun.ac.za or visit www.stellenboschfootball.co.za
