The new prefects of Silukhanyo Primary School in Asanda Village and their co-ordinator and deputy principal Thobile Majingo.

Prefects instill new values Silukhanyo Primary School in Asanda Village, Lwandle has added another dimension to their education. The school recently, for the first time since its establishment in 2001, rolled out a prefect and class monitor-system. Deputy principal Thobile Majingo is proud of the initiative, which forms part of a course he is doing in education management and leader-

ship development at the University of Cape Town. He says the system was put in place to address general discipline at the school. Majingo emphasises that late coming is a major concern and was one of the main reasons for the introduction of the prefect system. He is optimistic about the system’s effect as less latecomers have been reported since the 16 prefects started their duties at the end of February. Majingo says in the three weeks

the problem has decreased from 165 learners coming to school after 07:50, when classes start,to 48 learners. He says the project comes with challenges like prefects being bullied by other learners, but that these obstacles will be addressed. A meeting will also be held with the prefects’ parents to ensure that the children stay motivated and focused. “We want the learners to be responsible and are preparing them to become better citizens and leaders.”

The Gordon’s Bay Rotary Club is hosting a three-day family health campaign in Gordon’s Bay, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Lwandle. Parents need to take their children’s Road to Health cards along when they visit the clinics. The Department of Environmental Affairs, the Red Cross and WalkitOff will also have information stalls. Gordon’s Bay Clinic: measles, polio drops, Vitamin A, deworming, environmental health, diabetes screening, hypertension testing, BMI, nutrition and lifestyle choices education/information, footcare, TB testing. A treat for the moms to be will be the 3D sonar screening. A dietician will also give talks on nutrition information to pregnant

and breastfeeding women (2 and 3 April only); family planning, HIV testing and counselling and pap-smeers. Free eye screenings will be done by Pierre Volschenk Optometrists on Wednesday and Friday from 14:00 – 16:00. Sir Lowry’s Pass Clinic will offer the same services including free eye screening by the Gordon’s Bay Eye Clinic on Thursday morning until 13:30. Mobile Clinics for children only will run on these three days at the Lwandle and Nomzamo community halls and at the Spring of Life Crèche in Asanda Village. The organisers have also arranged for two taxi’s to transport adults who want to make use of the free health services to the Gordon’s Bay Clinic at no cost. People need to look out for the taxi’s with the notices of the health services on their vehicles. For your nearest site: sms *120*7343# or go to www.rfha.org.za

In 2010 kry Somerset-Wes weer 217 huise.

GRANVILLE LATIEF,

Service delivery protests in Lwandle last week resulted in the N2 being closed for hours.

Chamber calls for accountability DELIAH BRINKHUIS Motorists were irate last Monday after the N2 was temporarily closed as a result of service delivery protests. The road was closed shortly after 06:30 when picketing started at the Hlati Drive and Onverwacht Road intersections, and traffic had to be diverted. The protest sparked a heated discussion on Facebook with a few users saying it reminded them of the 1980s. One user said the Western Cape would be made “ungovernable” closer to the elections with daily violence on the main routes of the Cape Peninsula. The Cape Chamber of Commerce said in a media release that protesters should be held accountable for the damages and the disruption in economic activity. Constable Mthokozisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle Police says nine people were taken in for questioning, including six women who were later released as they could not be linked to the protest. Andiswa Sitesu (21), Zukile Ntulwana (19) and Paseka Mthetho (35) appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on charges of public violence. Sitesu was released on a warning to appear in court again on 24 April. Ntulwana and Mthetho remained in custody until their bail application today (Tuesday).
