Remembering Madiba

Robbers steal 15 cellphones

Former president Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95 at his home in Johannesburg last Thursday. The news of his death became known, millions of South Africans and people across the globe have paid tribute to the anti-apartheid icon. Helderberg Gazette asked locals what Mandela personifies for them.

DJ Pistol from Gordon’s Bay says: “Although the passing of Madiba is sad, we should remember that he was old and that he is resting now.” He says he is glad that he knew someone like Madiba in his lifetime and would tell his children about him and how he brought a nation together. Cynthia Madikane: “South Africa will miss him as he caused so much positive change in the country. I wish Jacob Zuma was like him.”

Xolile Gela of Lwandle says he will always respect Madiba’s legacy. He says because of Madiba he was able to study at the University of Stellenbosch and own a house. “Previously only men used to live in the hostels in Lwandle, but it was later changed to also accommodate their families. Madiba also implemented the RDP Housing Projects.” PHOTOS: DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Beverly Saga from Strand says Nelson Mandela was truly remarkable and that he will be missed. “I am sure he is in heaven. He has done so much for this country and his life should be celebrated. His legacy must live on,” she says.

Malcolm Peters of Strand says Nelson Mandela was a big icon, not only in South Africa, but globally.

Two people were injured during a house robbery in Lwandle on 1 December. According to Lwandle police spokesperson Const Mthokozisi Gama, seven armed suspects entered the house at about 02:00 and held the occupants of the house at gunpoint. The suspects then demanded money and cellphones from them. According to Gama the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of money and 15 cellphones. He says they fired two shots, injuring two people in the house – one in the leg and one in the shoulder. No arrests have been made yet. Gordonsbaai-inwoner

Carols by candlelight at historic church in Somerset

The congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church in Church Street, Somerset West is organising an open air carols by candlelight evening on Friday 13 December.

This historic church, which is the oldest building in the Helderberg and one of the oldest in the country, has been severely vandalised, but new life will soon be breathed into it. According to one of the organisers, a lease

agreement was recently signed between the owners of the building and the New Apostolic Church. The process of restoring the dilapidated building to its former glory, has subsequently started. People attending the carol service will also be given the opportunity to have a look at the restorations as well as the plans in the pipeline for the church. The inauguration service will be on 19 January and the congregation will include

members of the church from Somerset West for whom the current building in Lourens Street has become to small. The carols by candlelight starts at 19:30. Attendants can look forward to an evening filled with most, if not all, the classic Christmas carols to which they can also sing along. A special choir will also perform. Everyone is welcome, but please bring your own picnic basket. Entry is free.
