Survey indicates household changes According to the latest results of StatsSA’s General Household Survey (GHS), life is somewhat better for those living in the Rainbow Nation. The results indicate that more people rely on state coffers because the percentage of individuals who benefited from social grant, has increased dramatically. The survey, which was conducted between January and December 2013, further indicates that 73,5% of persons aged 5–24 attended educational institutions, which is about the same as in 2002. A lack of money for fees, remains the primary reason for a large proportion of individuals in this age group who were not studying. The GHS also reveals that public clinics and hospitals were the first choice of almost seven-tenths of households, when members fell ill or got injured. By comparison, almost a quarter (24,2%) of households indicated that they would go to private doctors. Nationally, the majority of households rated the quality of water-related servic-

es they received as ‘good’. Only 1,7% of households in the Western Cape issued a complaint about water that smelled bad. The percentage of households with no toilets or bucket toilets decreased by 5,3%. However, the number of households that have access to better sanitation facilities has improved. More than one-quarter of households that shared toilet facilities complained about the poor hygiene, where the rest felt that their physical safety was threatened when making use of facilities. The percentage of households for which refuse was removed at least once a week increased to 63,5%. Concurrently, the percentage of households that had to rely on their own refuse dumps or communal refuse dumps respectively, decreased. There remains large disparities however, between rural and urban areas. Most households in metropolitan and urban areas rely on weekly curb side removal, whereas only 6,9% of rural households made use of this.

You the Entrepreneur: The Entrepreneurial spirit DAVID MALHERBE Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Or is it something you need to be born with? I think it’s time we open our eyes to the reality that finding a secure job becomes more difficult by the day. A number of factors locally and abroad contribute to this situation. Protests and strikes to demand jobs will not solve the problem. It will rather be a threat to existing jobs. Government and existing businesses cannot supply in the tremendous demand for job opportunities. Therefore we need more new businesses. Unfortunately almost everyone of us grew up with the notion of “If on-

ly I could find a good job.” It is time that we change our thinking and teach our children likewise. Instead of looking for a job, ask “What can I do for myself?” Statistics South Africa recently announced that youth unemployment in South Africa has grown to 36,1% – a 3,4% increase since 2008. Even the deputy president emphasised the seriousness of this problem in his speech on Youth day. But although youth unemployment is such a big issue in South Africa, today’s youth are seldom willing to do just about anything to earn a living. Although many South African youths are unemployed, the socalled “American dream” of a dream job that will be the answer to all their aspirations and goals

stays fixed in their minds. Unfortunately for the large majority, it will stay a dream. What can you do for yourself? Most say that they do not have enough money to start a business. Fact is that many successful entrepreneurs started out with almost nothing. Find something you can sell and you have a business. Do not think you need business premises to start. Most business happens through sales people without premises. Don’t say “I cannot sell.” Many people who once said, “I’ll never be in sales”, myself included, later made a good living from sales. The most important quality you need is an entrepreneurial spirit. Believe in yourself and be willing to do just about anything to make it. This will be your best chance to realise your dreams.

This was possible through a donation by Accounting Comes Alive and the Moshal Scholarship Programme. The Colour Accounting learning system and materials are being piloted at various other schools across the province, where learners and teachers alike have received them enthusiastically. Teachers who have used the system say it is an excellent support for the CAPS curriculum. “I have changed the whole way I am teaching Accounting,” says teacher Jahnie Steenkamp of Labori High in Paarl, one of the first group of teachers to try the system. Accounting Comes Alive co-founder,

Peter Frampton, along with a friend, agreed that there had to be a better way to teach Accounting, thus the idea to start the company was initiated. “Colour Accounting is a new, graphical way to explain accounting, using diagrams, colour and plain language. Even though I’m a qualified Chartered Accountant, I struggled with Accounts 1 to complete my BCom at UCT. When I later joined KPMG, the global accounting firm, I realised that I wasn’t alone,” explains Peter. The Colour Accounting system is licensed in South Africa and around the world for teaching. “The kids absolutely love it,” says Colleen Hodge, an Accounting teacher who has helped to train teachers across the province in the new system. Frampton wanted the programme to be to the benefit of learners in South

Africa and offered to donate licenses, materials and teacher training to 70 000 Accounting students in schools falling under the Western Cape Education Department. With support from the Moshal Scholarship Programme, which paid for the materials to be manufactured, a pilot was rolled out for the first 2 500. Following successful initial teacher training workshops for a total of about 80 teachers in 2012 and 2013, a third group of teachers will attend workshops later this year, says Frampton. Framptom’s dream is to roll Colour Accounting out to every school in South Africa. “Financial literacy is important for all South Africans. And being accounting literate is a truly marketable skill in high demand. It’s brilliant for job creation,” he concludes.
