Summer Jazz Series on Paarl Mountain EspAfrika, the organiser of the acclaimed Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF), has announced a new series of outdoor jazz events that will take full advantage of the balmy summer evenings in Paarl. Presented by Lion of Africa Insurance, the Summer Jazz Series is set to play host to the likes of Jimmy Dludlu, Jimmy Nevis and Judith Sephuma, who will be supported by several local acts. The series starts on Sunday 26 January at the amphitheatre adjacent to the Taal Monument on Paarl Mountain with Jimmy Dludlu performing. Dludlu was 13 years old when he first picked up a homemade guitar and started teaching himself to play by imitating the jazz and African music he heard on the radio. His first performances were at township

weddings and functions with his cousin. Through determination and hard work Dludlu’s success as an internationally renowned jazz artist has grown in leaps and bounds. His debut album for PolyGram, Echoes from the Past, was released in September 1997 to a wealth of superlatives from the media. The album was also well received by the industry and won two Sama Awards for best newcomer and best contemporary jazz album in 1998. The album has since been released in nine countries on the Verve label, including United States, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden and Hungary. In March 2000, Dludlu was further acknowledged by the South African music industry, winning the best male artist category, and with Essence of Rhythm taking the best contemporary jazz album prize at the Sama Awards. Dludlu’s style includes wide-ranging influences, combining both traditional and modern elements of jazz, drawn from among others Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Pat Metheny, to South African legends Miriam Makeba, Letta Mbulu, Hugh Masekela, Themba Mokwena, and Allen Kwela. The event is presented by Lion of Africa Insurance in association with Heart104.FM, Paarl Post and South African Breweries. The concert starts at 18:00. Tickets range from R120 to R150 and are available from Computicket. For more information visit The Summer Jazz Series page on Facebook.

Ek moes klere was, kook en my boeties versorg,” vertel sy.

dan moes my pa haar soek,” sê sy.

Ek glo dit is hoekom ons so graag Nuwejaarsvoornemens maak.

Do you produce Mbekweni Muffins or Chicago Chocolates? Or maybe Klein Drakenstein Cookies or Smartie Town Sweets? Drakenstein Gazette wants to find out more about entrepreneurs that operate their unique businesses from their homes, making interesting products. In today’s tough economy, starting your own business is the solution. Not only do you create work for yourself, but for others too. Send us a description of your business, or come and tell us about it. Once a month the Gazette Entrepreneur of the Month will be selected. The winner will receive a promotional article in the Drakenstein Gazette and an advertisement to boost his or her business. To enter or for more information, call 021 870 4614; e-mail drakenstein@media24.com or visit our office at 1a New Street, Paarl.

Christmas party at De Poort

The Rageltjie charity organisation which was started in 1996 by Andri Fotia, held their annual Christmas party for more than 200 children last year at the De Poort Historical Village. The children were treated to a day filled with fun on slippery slides, good food and Christmas presents for each of them.

Fotia has been doing wonderful workinthecommunitybyupliftingthe lives of young people. She has provided a permanent home for 13 children after their parents either died or could no longer look after them. None of these children where ever at school, but Fotia has now seen to it that each of them go to school every day. On weekends up to 100 children can

be seen playing at her home where they also receive a meal and clothes that are donated. Two wendyhouses have been erected on her property to provide more shelter for these children. “I am very thankful for the many volunteers and local businesses who contributed so generously to the Christmas party to help create an unforgettable day for the children”, says Fotia.

Statistics show that one in every eight women that die in South Africa, die from complications as a result of Cancer of the Cervix. Simply translated this indicates that if your daughter attends a party with seven other little girls, one of them may die as a result of Cancer of the Cervix. Almost 80% of cervical cancers are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).The vaccination prevents the infection of the virus from developing on the cervix. “We now have the opportunity to stop this illness; all that is required is effective vaccination. Western Cape Government Health will help you do this. Our health teams will be visiting all public and special education schools in the Province during February and again in September to administer free HPV vaccination to girls in Grade 4 and who have already turned nine and older,” states Minister Theuns Botha, Western Cape Minister of Health, who is a father and grandfather. During the next three years, WCGH will annually vaccinate all Grade 4 girls. It is however of vital importance that parents/caregivers and teachers play their role in this campaign. Parents need to ensure that they have signed and return the consent forms which they will receive from the school that their child attends. No girl will be vaccinated without parental consent. The consent form will be sent to parents

during the next few weeks. The consent form will only be given to those parents whose girls are eligible for the vaccine. These are: ) Attends a public or specialised education school, ) Is in Grade 4, ) Will be nine years old or older, by the time the campaign starts (17 February), ) Has a signed consent form. Should you wish to vaccinate your daughter and she does not meet these criteria, please speak to your pharmacist. The vaccination is available at pharmacies, however you will be charged for it. Vaccination remains one of the most effective manners in which to prevent illnesses in our children. Western Cape Government Health already offers many vaccinations that help keep your child healthy. Protection against HPV is the same as these vaccinations; you are protecting your daughter’s future health. Dates for the campaign, which takes place in two rounds, are: Round 1: 17 February – 14 March. Round 2: 29 September – 24 October. For more information and a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), please go to the following link, the FAQ is available in all three languages: http://www.westerncape.co.za/generalpublication/frequently-asked-questionsabout-human-papillomavirus-hpv Together, we can ensure that our daughters have a bright and healthy future.
