Mountain Reserve ‘in decline’ DALEEN FOUCHÉ

HE Montagu Mountain Reserve – a tourism attraction described as “the climbing mecca” of South Africa – is in danger of serious neglect if the management of this area is not reviewed. This is according to Ron Brunnings, who addressed the Montagu Eco Club at their annual general meeting on Thursday. Brunnings served on the Montagu Mountain Reserve Advisory Board, which was dissolved earlier this month. According to him, the advisory board’s official term ended in 2008, but a new board was not appointed. It was therefore decided that the board

continues its work as an un-constituted body. Brunnins says that the board was disbanded because local authorities no longer “heed its advice”. Brunnings, who is increasingly concerned about the reserve and its assets, says the Langeberg Municipality, custodian of the reserve, has no formal staff allocation and no dedicated budget, except for R30 000 per year for trail cleaning, which must be shared with Dassieshoek Reserve in Robertson. “Following the last local government election, it appears as though council and the Langeberg Municipality have distanced themselves further and further from their responsibili-

ties regarding the reserve.” Another concern, voiced by Brunnings, is that the municipality may re-proclaim the mountain reserve and leave it unprotected. He says it would therefore be “preferable” that the reserve be re-proclaimed in terms of the Protected Areas Act. Brunnings says that the advisory board compiled a management plan for the reserve, which was completed in 2006. But six years later, it must still be considered by council, despite being placed on the agenda on five separate occasions. Therefore the management plan has not been circulated for public comment, he says. But with the disbandment of the advisory

board, Brunnings intends to make the document public. The Montagu Mountain Reserve attracts between 4 000 and 5 000 people per year, comprised of walkers, hikers and rock climbers. Brunnings estimates that the reserve generates about R60 000 a year, despite little or no gate monitoring. Justin Lawson, a climbing guide in Montagu, says the reserve is important for tourism in Montagu and estimates that climbers spend R64 000 per month and R800 000 per year in Montagu. He believes that, if managed correctly, Montagu could follow the lead of Clanwilliam, which has an annual income of over R4 million generat-

ed by climbing activities in the area. Brunnings says that on “a positive note”, the municipality recently advertised positions for a Protected Areas Advisory Committee. The Montagu Mountain Reserve’s 1 288 hectares are home to a variety of fauna and flora. It surrounds Montagu on three sides. “In essence, the Montagu Mountain Reserve is an asset that we cannot afford to ignore. It is there for conservation, education, recreation and job creation.” . The Langeberg Municipality was contacted for comment but could not respond before the Gazette went to print.

If you have any information regarding the case, you can phone the unit at 0 023 346 5800. )) The Robertson police would like to warn people about a con-man who phones individuals and businesses to inform them that the bank details of Fercon Foods (Montagu Gardens in Cape Town) has changed.

“Toe ek my bewussyn herwin, kon ek nie praat, my arms of my regterbeen beweeg nie. Ek kon net my linkerbeen beweeg.”

“My ma se senuwees kon dit amper nie hou nie, sy was so bang ek val.”

By hierdie geleentheid is daar gewyde sowel as vrolike musiek opgedis. By having comprehensive critical illness cover you can make sure that you can afford the best possible care and hopefully recover without facing financial ruin. )) Becoming disabled can be devastating in so many ways. In some ways, your ability to earn an income in the future could be regarded as your greatest asset, especially if you are young, well qualified and skilled. Make sure that you consider what would happen financially if you were disabled either temporarily or permanently. Perhaps you would need a lump sum initially to meet expenses not covered by your medical aid and set up an environment to cater for your disability. Your long term need may be to replace your income on a monthly basis. Having a plan to cater for these needs, at least makes sure that you don’t have to worry about the financial implications of any disability. )) Pay yourself first.

Retirement always seems such a long way off, but it is funny how it can creep up on you. How many paydays do you have left until retirement? Consider this: a woman of 40, planning to retire at age 60 and with a life expectancy of 75 years. She has 240 pay days left to save for retirement. Sounds like a long time, until you realise that these 240 pay days need to provide sufficient income to provide for 180 pay days in retirement! Thanks to medical technology, we are able to live longer, which means that we need to realistically consider that our retirement years may last longer than initially expected. Make sure that your retirement plan is robust enough to weather the challenges that it may face. )) Saving for a future goal. The rule of 72 says that if inflation averages at 10% over the period of your investment, your buying power halves every seven years! Make sure that your investment suits your risk profile. If you are younger you may be willing to invest for a longer period, be more aggressive and willing to take more risks. However, the older investor may want to be more conservative and prioritise capital preservation.

Substance abuse not left unchallenged Action group is working on a long-term plan DALEEN FOUCHÉ

HE shocking discovery that 65% of 90 students at Langeberg High School tested positive for drug use earlier this year, contributed to the establishment of the Langeberg Substance Abuse Action Group. The group was established in May this year, when various organisations gathered to tackle the problem of substance abuse in the Langeberg. Magda Vorster, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Graham and Rhona Beck Skills Centre, says a substance abuse workshop was arranged after “desperate parents” approached the centre with a request to host activities to keep the youth busy and away from drugs. But Vorster says that if one is to tackle the drug dependency problem, it has to be approached from all three angles: prevention, treatment and after-care. Thus, the action group was

established with the input of various non-profit organisations, interested parties and governmental departments including the Langeberg Municipality. “It is not a new organisation, but rather a group made up of existing organisations and using existing infrastructure.” Vorster says a facilitator helped the group write a programme for fighting substance abuse in the area. She explains that the programme is modelled on a national programme, written for municipalities to fight substance abuse. One of the more immediate needs that the action group has identified, is to create a safe and appropriate place where people can go through detoxification. Dr Adriaan Landman, principal of Langeberg High School, says the action group has submitted a request to the mayor for a space where people may receive “immediate treatment” for substance

abuse. So far, the action group has identified which organisations are responsible for each part of the programme. It has also started creating a network of people and organisations that can help drug addicts and their families. But, Vorster says, the programme is still in its baby shoes and is a long-term strategy. The immediate action is to employ a volunteer to man a 24hour helpline. The volunteer will be able to put the caller through to the appropriate organisation for help. Another “first step” is to train five volunteers in counselling. Vorster, however, says the long-term goal of the group is to establish “a much needed” rehabilitation centre” for the Langeberg area. She says although there are rehabilitation centres in Cape Town and one in Worcester, these are difficult to access because they are mostly full.

Sedertdien het reekse soos Keeping up with the Kardashians en The Bachelor waarin meisies in ’n huis intrek om

Business Chamber active in Langeberg MELODY MITCHELL, convenor of the Langeberg Chamber of Business, writes: A recent report in the Gazette implied that the Langeberg Business Chamber is only active in Montagu. This is incorrect. The Langeberg Business Chamber is representative of the entire municipal area, with members from all of the five towns within the municipal boundary. It was created many years ago as an amalgamation of several local business chambers in order to better represent the entire region. The Langeberg Business Chamber serves all its members as an independent non-profit association that is not affiliated with any political organisation. The Chamber gives advice and assistance to local businesses, provides networking opportunities and information sharing, and consults with the municipality and other authorities to represent and ensure the smooth running of business in our region. There is no independent business chamber operating in Montagu.

Indien julle inligting het, kan julle my kontak by

Ten must-haves (part two) BY DANIQUE FULLARD THE search continues to select some delicious, easy to prepare, versatile and affordable ingredients which inspire us to break out of our normal weekly shopping list and surprise the family and friends with a new variety of flavourful dishes. Chicken fillets – the ideal meat when guests have arrived unannounced or if you have a hungry family demanding dinner and need a quick tasty option. You do not need special ingredients to make a delicious chicken dish. Simply look what you have in your cupboard and let that guide you. Thickly sliced chicken fillet, fried in some olive oil with salt and black pepper over some penne with some basil pesto and grilled Rosa tomatoes is a meal under 30 minutes! Otherwise, make your own marinated chicken kebabs (see below) or keep it healthy and add chicken strips to a vegetable stir fry. Easy chicken kebabs Serves 4-6 )) 8 skinless and boneless chicken thighs )) 2 onions, grated )) juice of 4 lemons )) 30 ml olive oil )) salt and freshly grounded black pepper to taste )) 50 g butter, melted Cut the chicken into cubes and set aside. Combine the grated onions, lemon juice, olive oil and seasoning in a large bowl. Add the chicken to the marinade and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for two hours. Remove the chicken from the fridge and thread the pieces onto skewers. Heat a griddle pan and grill kebabs for

six minutes on each side. Alternatively, braai the kebabs, turning more often if the coals are hot. Add the melted butter to the reserved marinade and baste the chicken throughout the grilling or braaing process. Onions – the flavour vegetable that complements so many meals: Keep a selection of spring onions, red onions and white onions to use in a variety of dishes, be it roasts, pastas, meat or poultry dishes or salads. Also use onion in relishes, sambals and sauces as a pungent and flavourful additive. Ginger – a sweet, pungent, soothing, spicy, healing herb. Ginger is aromatic and adds freshness to many meals. It also has amazing medicinal qualities. This herb improves digestion and liver function. It also controls nausea and coughing and stimulates circulation, relaxes spasms and relieves pain. Ginger increases perspiration and is excellent for helping cure colds and flu. Try out this brew to alleviate your cold and warm you up this winter. Ginger brew Makes about 3 1/2 cups )) 1/2 pound of unpeeled fresh ginger, thinly sliced )) 8 cups water )) 1 cup honey )) 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice In a saucepan, simmer the ginger and 4 cups of water, partially covered for 20 minutes. Strain the ginger into another saucepan. Add the honey, stirring to dissolve. Add the lemon juice and remaining four cups of water. Drink warm or at room temperature. Store in the refrigerator.

Robertson ‘On Fire for Christ’ A vibrant interdenominational group of Christians in Robertson has started an initiative to gather on a weekly basis to pray and intercede as the watchman of Robertson and the nation of South Africa at large. This group was formed in 2010 after realising the various challenges facing the community of Robertson and surrounding areas. It is the belief of the group that everything can be prevented or prevails through prayer. Siting the rampant increase in drug abuse, cases of theft, increase in poverty, diseases, marital issues amongst other things, the group meets every single Monday evening at 19:00 to intercede and stand in the gap for the community. The group also gathers on Fridays to map out the way forward and discuss matters that may arise

during the course of the week. Any member of the public is free to join and participate in the group’s activities. Currently the group is on fire with radical evangelism, mainly targeted to the farm workers who stay in Nkqubela. Every Thursday and Friday as early as 06:00 the group drives to Nkqubela to minister the Word of God to the farm workers, before their farm trucks pick them up for work. The group has also managed to organise revival crusades and fortnight door to door visits in Droëheuwel, Morrison and Panorama. Future plans for the group include: )) Inline expanding the work of God in Robertson, the group intends to further establish a solid intercessory part-

nership with the hospital. The sick and hopeless have been neglected for a long time and the group intends to make a difference by ministering to the sick. )) The group has a vision of holding crusades throughout Robertson and surrounding areas. Much more impact will be made once the group has gathered enough instruments, a PA system, a van and materials to be given for free to the needy, such as bibles, clothing, food and the like. In a quest to reach out to as many souls as possible, the group has come up with a call centre open 24 hours a day for prayer and counselling. It is in this light that anybody can call or sms on the following numbers, 0 073 723 0954 or 076 975 5816 or 083 725 0199.
