Double Century boosts coffers DALEEN FOUCHÉ Despite the many challenges faced by the organisers of the 2012 Coronation Double Century cycle challenge, the race took place without any incident over the past weekend. The Coronation, one of South Africa’s biggest annual road cycling events, brought more than 5 500 cyclists, organisers, crew and spectators to Swellendam and the Langeberg over the weekend. David Bellairs, director of marketing and sponsorship of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust (CTCTT), said 230 teams of up to 12 cyclists each tackled a challenging 202 km route. However, the event was almost cancelled due to protest action in the area. An urgent high level meeting was held between event organisers, the CTCTT and senior officials representing the South African Police Services, Provincial Disaster Management, Provincial Traffic Services, Provincial Community Safety and Provincial Emergency Medical Services. The outcome of the meeting was that, based on the current situation and with all available information a their disposal, the 2012 edition of the Coronation Double Century could proceed. Bellairs said that because protesters had indicated that the protest action would only continue in December, the meeting agreed that it would be safe to proceed with the race. The other big obstacle for race organisers was the massive road slip in the R60. The R60 between Ashton and Swellendam forms one of the most important routes in the race. Bellairs said that race organisers had considered moving the race, but this would have been logistically impossible. With the consent and help of the landowner, a new gravel road, which avoided the damaged section of the road, was made. He said the detour started 40 m before the damaged section on the Swellendam road and joined the R60 about 50 m beyond this section. “We had the most unbelievable support from the provincial government,” said Bellairs He explained that it was of the utmost importance that the race should continue in spite of the various challenges, because of the positive economic impact it has on the local communities. Altogether 40% of race participants are from outside the Western Cape and mostly from Gauteng. These participants and their families spend a “fair amount” of money in the region during this race.

Cyclists who have never before been exposed to the Langeberg area, also experience this as a great way of discovering the area. Bellairs said that because Swellendam could not accommodate all the contestants, crew and spectators, Robertson and even Montagu and Bonnievale received accommodation bookings as a result of the race. He said that Robertson was “almost fully booked”. The Robertson tourism office confirmed this and reported that the race had secured a lot of bookings, which made up for the bookings that were lost due to protest action in the area. Elizma Botha, chairperson of the Robertson Tourism Association, said that, like many of the festivals in the area, this race ensures accommodation bookings and more spending in the area. She said that when she visited a popular restaurant over the weekend, there were several Coronation participants in the restaurant. The area has learnt several lessons from the Cape Epic last year, which can be applied to the Coronation. “It is good to see that the Valley is no longer just synonymous with wine,” Botha said, and added that the Langeberg is being recognised more and more as a cycling destination, whether it is mountain biking or road cycling. Bellairs explained that because the Coronation Double Century is a charity event, several sport journalists competed in the event. Western Cape MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, also took part in the race and was “very impressed”. He said race organisers were encouraged to conduct a socio-economic impact study on the race, but said organisers do not have the necessary funding to measure the impact of the race on the community. According to Bellairs, the Coronation Double Century aims to become more involved with the communities en route, including local schools. He also competed in the event, and although they were battered by wind, rain and even hail, it was “fantastic”. Bellairs encouraged local towns such as Bonnievale, Robertson and Montagu, which are on the Coronation route, to promote their towns through the race, because unlike the Cape Epic, the route of this race will not change. He expressed his gratitude to local residents who supported the race and were patient with the traffic delays. He also thanked the Ashton police, in particular, for their support and help.

This initiative was the brainchild of Friends Of Our Tortoises (Foot), a Montagu-based group advocating the safety and protection of tortoises. The group was established earlier this year after a Montagu resident found an injured tortoise in her road. The tortoise’s shell was broken and it was in danger of being eaten alive by ants. Support Rotary’s lifestraw for water The Breede River Winelands Rotary Club, in conjunction with Rotary International, is launching a new fundraiser to buy water purifiers for communities across South Africa that do not have access to clean water. These purifiers, known as the lifestraw, can purify up to 18 000 F water and last for three years. Gavin Schachat, member of Rotary International, gave a presentation of the lifestraw to local Rotarians and emphasised the need for the lifestraw in various communities. He says a need for lifestraws has already been identified for 140 households in the Swellendam area. Schachat says one lifestraw costs R350. In order to raise money for lifestraws, the Breede River Winelands Rotary Club will sell safe-water bracelets for R25 each. If you are interested in supporting the project and buying a bracelet, phone Nelda Wiese on 0 023 614 3279.

Bollywood star shines on Montagu mountain DALEEN FOUCHÉ A Bollywood film crew from India visited Montagu on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 November to film a scene of the movie Yaariyan. The scene that was filmed was that of the hero of the film, played by the famous Bollywood star Himansh Kohli, climbing a mountain. The climbing scene was shot over two days at two spots within the Montagu Mountain Reserve and on private land. Justin and Riki Lawson, owners of Montagu Rock Climbing, were asked by the producers of the film to lend a hand. Justin says that he was involved in identifying the two locations for the shoot and also acted as a stunt double for one of the actors. The first location was Cogmans Buttress, situated within the Montagu Mountain Reserve, while the second location is a climbing spot situated on private land known as Lego Land in Cogmaskloof. Justin says the film crew and cast spent over R100 000 in Montagu during their two-day stay. Justin says that climbing and climbing-related events, like films with climbing scenes, can be a great source of income for Montagu. He says

Old Mother Hubbard lived in a shoe but, for many South African males, the thought of living in a brandy tank is far more alluring! But that’s what Johan Venter has achieved. The old KWV property in the centre of Montagu was sold to Jannie le Roux and the property, comprising the brandy tank, boiler house, wine cellar and offices, was subdivided. The offices were converted into a house, the brandy tank into a cold room for fresh fruit and new houses built on vacant space. When Jannie retired and left town, the tank stood empty, but Johan Venter — an electrician who had moved to Montagu from Welkom in the Free State — bought the house and workshops. The properties opposite the derelict tank were not selling and Jannie toyed with the idea of turning it into a house after options for demolition and relocation were explored. In the end, Johan bought the tank for “a good price” in 2009 and took up the challenge of seeing Jannie’s dream come true – a home in a brandy tank. Plans were approved by the municipality in September 2010 and Johan started work with his own labour — he owns an electrical contracting company in the town. The tank’s previous use as a cold room was a big advantage, as it had been completely lined with cold-

These had sufficient load-bearing capability to carry the flooring beams for the first floor, which occupies half the floor area while the other half over the living area is double volume. The first floor has one vast bedroom and a bathroom. An entrance lobby was added to the front of the tank and a scullery area to the back, above which sits the main bathroom at first floor level.

The ground floor was divided into a guest bedroom and bathroom and the kitchen. The other double volume half accommodates the living and dining areas. Johan says it was not an easy job. “Everything had to be custom-made and every part of the job was a challenge. Not the least was cutting through the 6 mm steel plate for the windows and doors, and installing these. It was labour-intensive!” ) This article was first published on www.capeinfo.co.za

Tanya en Rossouw Brümmer (agter) is hier saam met die personeel van Wimpy Robertson.

Beste koffie nou in L’berg Wimpy in Robertson vier Saterdag 1 Desember hulle vierde verjaarsdag.

Wimpy so goed is.

Bumper harvest overflows ANNETTE THERON This year’s harvest of oats, barley, wheat and canola in the Overberg has exceeded all expectations. Rainfall at 15% higher than the long-term average – and favourable climate conditions – are the main reasons why farmers are still harvesting, according to Richard Krige, chairperson of region 27 of Grain SA. “There are some problems with grades with some of the grain types, but with regards to yield, it is a bumper harvest,” Krige says. Stiffie Cronjé, media spokesperson for the Theewaterskloof Municipality, says that depending on the rand yield of the crop, it will definitely result in a positive impact on local businesses. Local spending power is usually more if agricultural yields are above average, he says. There is widespread agreement that this year’s harvest is a bumper one. However, barley was damaged by the heavy rain that fell in October this year – right at the time that the harvest was meant to start. The rainfall was higher than the previous high of 2004 and forced farmers to delay their harvest by about two weeks. Swellendam’s barley is said to have suffered more damage than Caledon’s. A local farmer says that in some places the barley has been downgraded to feed barley. Most of the barley in Caledon is being downgraded, he says, but the malt factory will still try to malt it as there is no other barley available. The farmer says the wheat quality is excellent and the oats quality is also good, although there is currently an oversupply of oats in South Africa. Commenting on the harvest of all crop types in general, Pieter Beukes, chairperson of the Caledon Agricultural Association, says the tonnage per hectare is much higher compared to last year and he adds that the quality is better. The plantings for the 2011 – 2012 season wheat area was 15% more. Barley was 7% more; lupins 50%; triticale (korog) 11%, and canola 6%. A 9% greater area in total was planted to cash crops. “I do not think there’s a farmer who can complain about this year’s harvest – it’s a blessed harvest,” Beukes says. “The only frustration has been waiting your turn at the silos, but it’s

Farmers in the area are very happy with the harvest this year. PHOTO: AVRIL YOUNG not really something to complain about because we must be grateful for the good returns.” Last year Overberg Agri received 133% of its grain storage capacity. Expectations are that this will possibly be 145% this year. Francois Joubert, managing director of Overberg Agri Bedrywe, confirms that the harvest is more than Overberg Agri Bedrywe’s capacity. As a result, they are creating additional capacity with silo bags, grain dams and grain bunkers. “The staff are working 24/7, but are all positive about handling the harvest.” Krige adds that Overberg Agri is also moving grain to buyers by truck and rail so that storage space is created. “The facilities are slightly under pressure,” Krige admits, “given the volumes that are being delivered and the additional grades for the barley. The patience and understanding from the farmers and the acceptance that the systems are under pressure, given the volumes, have been commendable.” He says that the number of different grades that need to be accommodated have put further pressure on grain storage. Krige says that the surplus production of barley and oats is expected and hopefully this will result in revised intentions of planting for the coming season. He says that the increased production of canola will help curb the importation of plant protein and result in massive savings of foreign currency, as South Africa is a net importer of vegetable oils and meal.

The looming reality of soon lazing on the beach, by the river or simply outside by the braai this Christmas season, in a swimming costume, is quite a daunting thing. It has, however, motivated me to make a few healthy decisions. Food lovers may disagree with this idea. I appreciate a quote that claims, “A balanced diet is so easy to achieve; have chocolate in the morning and in the evening.” This said, I’m not suggesting buying expensive diet products or ultra healthy ranges of food. Firstly, the long, light and warm mornings before work provide many of us with a good opportunity to do a bit of exercise or walk the dogs. Secondly, have a look for bags of seasonal fruit at your local supermarket. A stock of inexpensive seasonal fruit is great for healthy snacking during the day. At the moment, look out for spinach, carrots, baby marrows, cucumbers, cauliflowers, apricots, peaches, strawberries, pawpaws, guavas, pineapples, melons and plums. Lastly, get creative on your patio, in your kitchen or in your courtyard with a herb garden. It is so simple to do and there’s nothing like sprucing up dishes and salads with fresh herbs. Embrace this season with delicious salads and bowls of summer fruit, leaving off the scoop of ice cream if you can. Enjoy this recipe, taken from Fay Lewis’ book, ‘At

my table, published by Struik (2008). You can always substitute the fruits and or nuts according to what you have or prefer. Fruity Muesli , 750 ml rolled oats , 500 ml fresh orange juice , 500 ml plain yoghurt , 250 ml seeded and chopped dried dates , 125 ml seedless raisins , 125 ml thinly sliced dried apricots , 100 ml honey , 250 ml milk , 1 large apple, peeled and coarsely grated , 100 ml toasted slivered almonds and fresh mixed berries for serving. Combine the oats, juice and yoghurt in a large bowl. Cover tightly and refrigerate overnight. Stir the dates, raisins, apricots, honey, milk and apples into the oat mixture. Cover and return to the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Serve the muesli in individual serving bowls, topped with the almonds and mixed berries.
