Montagu named the best town DALEEN FOUCHÉ

Montagu has once again won a prestigious award by bagging Cape Info’s Best Town Award. Cape Info, a well respected travel portal for South Africa, embarked on a one-month journey through 16 towns to discover South Africa’s best town. Napier, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Tulbagh, Darling and Bloemfontein were only a few of the competing towns. Stanford in the Overberg was selected as winner of the Best Village Award. Mareletta van Zyl-Wohlfarter, chairperson of the Montagu Ashton Tourism Association, says the award will contribute to the town’s

growing reputation as a tourism destination. But Van Zyl-Wohlfarter says winning the competition is not just a “nice title”, but a “working prize”. She explains that Cape Info will launch programmes, identified by key roleplayers who will assist the town with marketing Montagu as a travel and economic development destination. Carl Momberg, publisher of Cape Info, says Montagu offers a combination of “stunning architectural heritage, a very lively community and a mountain setting which is unsurpassed anywhere in the world”. He says the award can lead Montagu to strengthen its offering even further. “I have no doubt that locals will realise the opportunities.” He says it is important to promote tourism,

because it creates jobs. “Tourism creates better environments and more creative and stimulated communities.” Van Zyl-Wohlfarter says the tourism sector is immensely important, not just to Montagu but to the entire area. She says the other economic sectors such as agriculture and canning are limited in their growth because of rising fuel and electricity costs. Despite economic challenges, the tourism industry is showing growth. “Tourism is not just important for tourism businesses, but also for other businesses such as grocery stores.” She adds that tourism brings visitors and money into a town that create jobs and uplift the community. On the Cape Info website, the Montagu Information Office was branded as “the best” Infor-

Momberg says that some of Montagu’s strong points are the beauty of the surrounding mountains and its position on the popular Route 62. However, Momberg says that clear branding for Montagu is still needed.

Dance for All is ‘stepping out’ Dance for All’s (DFA) tenth annual Stepping Out Tour will take place in the first week of December, with performances in Swellendam and Montagu. Over the past decade, the tour has successfully created an opportunity for DFA’s Cape Town and rural students to showcase their work together. It is an ideal way for them to meet each other and to share their knowledge, training and experiences. While their environments differ, dance is a passion that brings them together. A spin-off of the Stepping Out Tour is that the vibrant performances help to expose more people to dance and the work of DFA, while building an audience in these areas and encouraging more young people to consider training and a career in dance. There will be a diverse programme, including the cutest jive you have ever seen, a Bollywood number, a sassy ’50s-style jazzy cabaret, swing, classical ballet, contemporary and hip hop. Pauline van Buitenen’s group from Bar-

rydale will perform some pieces that won them fifth position in the final of the Canola Jam, an Idols-inspired local talent show held in conjunction with the Swellendam Canola Festival earlier this year. Another highlight will be a piece choreographed by Zolani’s Aviwe and Mthuthuzeli November for their former fellow students, who are taught by Fiona Sargeant. The young men both have three-year scholarships to further their dance training at the Cape Academy of Performing Arts in Cape Town. The Swellendam performance will take place at Swellendam High School on 7 December at 19:30. For bookings and information, contact The Old Gaol Restaurant on 0 028 514 3847. The performance in Montagu will be in the Montagu Primary School on 8 December at 19:30 Contact Fiona Sargeant on 0 082 905 4611 for bookings and information.

He is to serve 2 000 hours of community service over weekends and public holidays, starting this week. He is also never allowed to own an animal again. Street children helped DALEEN FOUCHÉ The Nieuwe Horizons organisation, which works with vulnerable children in Ashbury, is urging residents to not give money or food to children who are begging on the street. Nieuwe Horizons is a non-profit organisation that presents various programmes, including feeding schemes, education and after school programmes, to several Ashbury children. It receives most of its funding from the Netherlands. Nieuwe Horizons recently distributed pamphlets throughout Montagu to urge residents not to give money to street children. Sanja van de Sande, a Montagu resident and a contributing member of Nieuwe Horizons, says street children in Montagu earn up R100 per day. She says the result is that many children choose to beg on the street rather than attend school. She explains that the children buy drugs or alcohol with the money and even sell food that they receive to buy drugs. Van de Sande says that children as young as eight years old will buy drugs. She says further that many of these children have drug and alcohol dependent parents.

AFTERCARE: Siyakhuthanza Aftercare in Nkqubela was established in 2008. The aim of the aftercare is to help school children with their school work after school hours and to keep the children safe. The aftercare service provides children with school equipment, refreshments and food. The aftercare request donations from the community to keep their doors open and provide for the needs of the organisation. Siyakhuthanza is a registered non-profit organisation. Seen here are children and the caretakers at their end-of-year function. For more information on the Siyakhuthanza aftercare, phone Pelma Mhobo on 073 552 6160.

But the information campaign to make residents aware of the problem is only the first step. Van de Sande says that there are several projects in the pipeline to improve the lives of these children. Montagu residents are currently working with the municipality and sponsors to establish sport grounds and sporting goods in Ashbury so that an after-school programme for the children can be created. An extra classroom at Ashbury Primary is also being built with the help of the ABSA Cape Epic and Joel Stransky, so that children who do not have basic education may have a separate classroom. Van de Sande says many of the children suffer from foetal alcohol syndrome and struggle to remember what they have learnt. Van de Sande, who worked as a teacher in the Netherlands for over 32 years, gives academic and music classes to the children who are willing to attend. Van de Sande urges residents not to give money to these children, so that they can stay in school and participate in programmes of learning. She asks that residents rather donate money to Nieuwe Horizons, which feeds and clothes the children. If you would like to get involved or give a donation, you can contact Van de Sande on 0 023 614 3525.

is almost always related to a diet high in sugar, fats and a lack of daily physical exercise. With the body having to convert these sugars at a high rate every day by using insulin, cells become increasingly resistant to taking up the sugars to use them as required, and the sugars then remain in the blood stream. By not being physically active, the metabolism slows down, promoting the body to store more fats, thereby impacting the problem. Once Diabetes Type 2 is diagnosed, a person will need to start taking chronic medication, which will aid in the uptake of the sugars so that the body may still be able to use them. Every cell in the body uses these for energy, and if the cells do not obtain the required amount, they will be unable to work at their

OCCUVISION MONTAGU OOGFEITE: DIABETES MELLITUS

As jy wonder of jy diabetes het, laat toets jou by jou dokter, apteek of kliniek. We’ve all heard the hype around “a healthy mind, a healthy body”, but what does this really mean, and what impact does it have to you and your health? There is a long list of ailments and illnesses with associated onset relating to unhealthy living, and more particularly, unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise. Everyday ER24 transport patients by ambulance, and see patients who are in hospital with various ailments and illnesses. One of the diseases with more and more reported cases per day, and which is now being called an epidemic, is Diabetes Type 2. Diabetes Type 2 is the preventable type of diabetes, with only a small percentage of cases relating to family history and genetics. The cause

Dankbaarheid of propaganda?

Protect diversity CapeNature released its annual report on biodiversity last week, placing a renewed emphasis on the diverse natural resources of the Western Cape. Anton Bredell, Western Cape MEC for Local Government, who was the keynote speaker at the launch of the report, stated that although the Western Cape only constitutes 11% of the land surface of South Africa, this space houses more than half of the country’s plant species. He says 57% of mammals, 51% birds and 65% of the country’s freshwater fish are found in the Western Cape. Population growth and industrial development threaten biodiversity and the wealth of natural resources in the Western Cape. It is now more important than ever to find sustainable ways of living and developing the economy without sacrificing our natural resources and environment.

Opreg dankbaar

LIONEL ADENDORF, Bonnievale

Soyisile Mokweni, manager of the Langeberg Municipality, responds: The municipality fully agrees that it is our duty to provide housing on behalf of National and Provincial Governments. We have never requested Mr Mlatha to publish such article. Many houses have been built and handed over to beneficiaries and we continue to do so but have never demanded publicity in exchange. There are many citizens who have written to us thanking the municipality for the various things we are doing and Mr Mlatha is only joining the many voices that are grateful for what the municipality is doing. It is common for the human race to say thank you for a job well done, regardless of whether we paying for it or not. Mr Mlatha has his democratic right to express his appreciation in whichever way he wishes to do so. If I remember well Mr Mlatha is also expressing his appreciation for the eye test that was paid for him and the spectacles he received. Why is that not also regarded as propaganda because Mr Mlatha is constitutionally also entitled to health care from the government. There is lots of negative propaganda that is published weekly in the same Gazette about the municipality, and I am yet to hear anyone criticizing The Gazette for running a bad campaign against the municipality. As a community newspaper, The Gazette should be balanced, factual and not be sensational.

BONNIE PEOPLE NOW MOBILE: Christmas came early to the Bonnie People Creche in Bonnievale this year when they were presented with not one, but two vehicles from organisations who have taken a keen interest in the development of this dynamic little centre. A Toyota Quantum Bus was donated by the Bonnievale Project Luxembourg while a Toyota Avanza 7seater vehicle was donated by the Breede River Winelands Rotary Club. The Bonnie People creche was started by one of the local Rotarians, Heidi van der Merwe, some 15 years ago. It has grown into an immensely valuable community project in Bonnievale and assists the inhabitants of an informal settlement by running a feeding scheme for all the children and hosts, a day-care facility for children aged 0 – 2 years and a nursery school for 3 – 6 years old. It also facilitates some youth and adult activities.

Dis waar ek met my innerlike siel begin praat. Is jy oukei? Gaan jy wees, of gaan jy crack?

Dit laat egter steeds vrae by my.

Red.

Historic house on the market An historic Cape Dutch manor house has come on to the market in Robertson. “De Oude Opstal” is one of the two oldest properties in the entire town, already appearing on a map as “the old farmhouse” at the time Robertson was formally proclaimed in 1853. Whilst its exact provenance is not known, the style of the home’s gable suggests that it was built in the early 19th century. Occupying an erf of over 5 500 m², this well-preserved home is now available for purchase, priced at R3,65 million. The adjoining vacant plot of 2 500 m² is also for sale, at an additional R1.3 million. PGP’s Robertson agent Jolette Viviers says the home has been beautifully restored and modernised, and has been run as a successful guesthouse since 2010. “The split-level home includes a total of six bedrooms, four bathrooms and two spacious reception rooms,” she says, “all set within a magnificent garden with numerous large trees. A small river

runs through the property all year round, and its location in a quiet cul de sac creates an atmosphere of farm-style living, even though it is actually in the heart of a peaceful suburban area, close to the town centre.” Whilst the exact construction date may not be known, Viviers says the property’s history is not a blank page. “We do know that a wagonmaking family, the Streichers, lived in the house in the 1890s, at a time when this craft was becoming increasingly important for transporting the fruits of the Cape’s fertile farms to the up-country mining settlements. But, sadly, after this heyday had passed, the property fell into disrepair. It was purchased on auction for the princely sum of R2 400 in 1945, in a completely ruined condition. A young businessman named Johan de Jong bought the property in what was at the time considered a terribly risky transaction – locals thought he was mad to exchange a perfectly

good modern home for an old ruin. With a limited budget but ample enthusiasm, De Jong set about renovating the property, preserving the original doors and windows with their handmade glass, but replacing the thatch roof and a great deal of ailing woodwork and walling. Once the project was complete, he moved his family into the home and filled it with a renowned collection of antique furniture.” The current owners purchased the property in 2010 and converted it into a four-star guesthouse. “This makes it an appealing proposition for buyers who would like to continue running the business,” says PGP’s MD for the Boland and Overberg regions, Annien Borg. “The tourism industry in Robertson is growing steadily, thanks to its location on the scenic Route 62, and its growing number of popular festivals such as the Hands on Harvest, Robertson Slow and the Wacky Wine Weekend.”
