Mindfulness Issue Two
Join us as we co-create a Tarot practice that supports your goals, helps you connect with your inner voice, and cultivates real results in your life!
As I write this letter, the sun is finally shining after weeks of chilly days and winter storms. I am ready for the change of season, for the bloom of fresh flowers, the warmer days and, yes, even the pitter-patter of spring rains. It is always around this time of year that I try to remind myself to slow down, to take notice, even through the promise of longer days tries to draw me into fevered activity. My creative energies always tend to run higher in the spring, and while this makes for productive days, I sometimes forget to stop and smell the flowers. And that is what this issue is all about. Making the time to take notice, to cultivate awareness and enjoy the present moment. To connect with how you feel, what you think, who you are, right here, right now, without judgement. We can cultivate this sense of awareness and open a dialogue with ourselves in this
moment through mindful Tarot practices. Discover the five ways you can infused mindfulness into your readings with an excerpt from my book, Mindful Tarot: Spreads for Personal Growth (shameless plug!) Then kick off your day with a daily spread for Mindful Moments. Every moment can be mindful if you simply take the time to let it. Discover four Tarot spreads that can help you free your mind by releasing limiting thoughts, become aware of your relationship to your physical self, open your heart to embrace compassion and connect with your soul to tune into your higher purpose. Speaking of soulful people with a profound purpose, I am so excited to announce the addition of two new columns to the Journal! Kimberly M. Tsan, the creator of Fables Den, adds a little light and laughter with her popular Tarot Doodles. Then dive deeper

THE PRACTICE OF
Mindful TAROT An Excerpt from “Mindful Tarot: Spreads for Personal Growth by Emberlyn Chase
Reading Tarot mindfully helps us draw connections between where we are and how we experience the present moment. The wisdom gleaned from the cards, and our readings as a whole, remind us that the answers we seek are already inside of us. We must look to our hearts for guidance, for no one knows us better than our inner self. It can help us to embrace the challenges we face in life and see them as opportunities for growth and knowledge. Mindful Tarot allows us to look at Tarot not just as a divinatory medium, but a personal spiritual practice and a communion with our inner self.
How to Practice Tarot Mindfully Reading Tarot mindfully engages the body, mind, heart and soul on every level.
Mindful Breathing Breathing is something we all do automatically, without thought to the process or how it feels in the moment. By bringing our focus intentionally to our breath, we can ground ourselves in the moment and open ourselves up to the possibilities and opportunities that await us in our reading. Begin by sitting in a comfortable position with your deck in front of you (and your reading area already prepared.) Focus on your deck for a moment, making sure that your cards are face down so that you are not distracted by an upturned card. Now gently shift your focus from the deck to the process of breathing. Pay attention to the rise and fall of your chest, the sensation of air passing through your nose. Breath deeply, making your breaths long and soft as you inhale and exhale. If your mind begins to wander or you find yourself distracted by something else in the room, remind yourself that this ok and gently steer your attention back to the breath. After a few moments release your breath fully. Feel free to release it on a mantra or vibration such as “om. This vibration symbolically acknowledges our connection to the Universe. The rhythmic manta also serves to slow down the nervous system and calm the mind similar to meditation. It is also a wonderful way to signal the brain that we are stepping away from the mundane of life to enter a moment of peace and enlightenment. Mindful Shuffling Shuffling a deck of cards can sometimes feel mundane, a mindless task performed with the simple purpose of mixing up the cards. But shuffling your deck can also be a wonderful exercise in meditation when it is performed mindfully. Begin by picking up your deck and taking note of the feel of the cards in your hands. Pay attention to the silkiness of the cardstock, the coolness of the cards against your warm palm. Search for any connections or vibrations that may pass between you and your deck. Note the weight of the deck split evenly into both hands as you prepare to shuffle. As you begin to shuffle listen to the rhythmic thwack-thwack-thwack of the cards as you bridge them back together. Rest your attention on the physical aspect of the cards and focus on the process of shuffling. Feel the energy flowing between you and your cards, embrace the connection.
Mindful Intentions When we lay down a Tarot spread for a reading we generally have an idea or a question in mind. Sometimes we follow the topics and positions laid out for us by a predetermined spread. Other times, we lay down cards with no specific direction, letting our intuition be our guide. Whether you are looking to answer a question, gain insight about a particular situation or are just seeking general inspiration, it is important to approach your reading intentionally. To read Tarot intentionally does not necessarily mean to read with a specific goal in mind. Reading intentionally is being able to set judgement aside and read the cards from a place of authenticity. Set your intention to read with your values and your core beliefs as your guide. Let the questions you ask, the advice you seek or the inspiration you desire, reflect who you truly are. Mindful Awareness It is tempting when reading a Tarot spread to rely solely on the description, keywords and interpretation of the cards and the positions within the spread. When reading to answer a specific question or deal with a situation we are often looking for the quickest fix, the easiest answer. But reading Tarot mindfully means setting aside our urge for instant gratification and really focusing on the message the cards are sharing. What do you see in the picture? What symbols stand out? How do the colors make you feel? What sense do you get from the imagery? When reading mindfully I suggest that a spread be dealt face-down. Each card is then flipped over one a time to allow for reflection and study without distraction. Once all the cards have been turned over, consider the spread as a whole and concentrate on the overall message. Of course you can accomplish much the same task by dealing all the cards face-up and taking the time to consider each card in turn. There is no right or wrong way to read Tarot, use whichever method connects with you. More important than the method of how you deal the cards, flip the cards or in which order you process the cards, is to read with an open awareness. Reading the cards intuitively, from a place free of judgment and open of heart is a wonderful way to gain greater insight and purpose from each and every reading.
Mindful Tarot is not a skill which is meant to be honed and then forgotten. It is a practice, a journey that will allow your wisdom heart to light your path as your inner self guides your way.

Once you have laid down a spread and read your cards, take a moment to sit and reflect on the practice as a whole. How did the reading make you feel? What insights did you gain? What challenges did it bring up? What does the message you receive mean to you? Writing down your reflections in a Tarot journal is an excellent way to deepen your connection with your practice. Noting your intention, your spread, the cards you pulled and your reflections allows you to maintain your focus and return to the message as needed. It is also a wonderful way to help you learn the energies of the cards and develop a more intuitive reading style.

DAILY SPREAD FOR
We spend the majority of our lives thinking about one thing, doing something else while feeling something else entirely. Our minds, our bodies and our hearts rarely function in alignment, meaning that we are not present for most of our lives. Most of us approach our lives like a trip to the movies: watching the actors on the screen while thinking about our emails and feeling guilty about the popcorn. We are not truly connected to the movie and therefore are unable to experience it in its entirety. When we live in a state of disconnect, such as this, we miss out on the enjoyment of the moment.
With so many thoughts in our internal world and so many distractions in our external world, it is important to find space for stillness and be open to the joy of this very moment. We have the potential to experience our greatest joy and happiness right here, right now. When we are present and attentive to this moment we let the regrets of the past and the fears of the future fall away. Clarity, calmness and peace bloom in this moment. 1. Find Clarity. When you are in the moment you have a much better focus and things flow naturally for you. 2. Cultivate Calmness. When you feel centred and focused on the present, the future nor the past may hold you back. 3. Dwell in Peace. When you court calmness and clarity, negativity will fade into the background allowing positivity and peace into this moment.

TAROT SPREADS TO HELP YOU PRACTICE
When we think of the practice of mindfulness, we often perceive it only as a form of sitting meditation. We picture ourselves cross-legged on a round cushion while soft music ebbs and flows in the background and smoke wafts up from an incense stick. But while meditation is an important practice in mindful living, it is not the only form of mindfulness. In order to obtain a clam and clear mind, a body in balance and a soul in harmony, you need to embrace mindfulness not just as a form of sitting meditation but as a part of your everyday life. In truth, anything and everything you do can be done as part as a mindful practice. From brushing your teeth to preparing dinner, mindfulness is available to you in every moment.
When you practice mindfulness in every moment you can connect with the peace and joy within yourself and immediately cultivate a positive impact on your daily life. These four Tarot spreads can help you free your mind by releasing limiting thoughts, become aware of your relationship to your physical self, open your heart to embrace compassion and connect with your soul to tune into your higher purpose.
Imagine mindfulness as a field of wildflowers, when viewed as a whole they become a beautiful and vibrant blur of color. Only when you bring into focus a single flower does the detail of each petal become clear. Mindfulness is the great landscape where awareness may bloom. When we become aware of what is going on within our own minds, then we can consciously cultivate thoughts that serve our highest good. When you free your mind from the limiting beliefs that stifle you, every challenge becomes an amazing opportunity for growth.

WHAT LIMITING THOUGHTS ARE HOLDING ME BACK? WHAT IS THE UNDERLYING ISSUE? WHAT IS CLOUDING MY PERCEPTION OF THE SITUATION? WHAT DO I NEED TO RELEASE TO GAIN CLARITY? HOW CAN I CAN EXPAND MY MIND TO WELCOME PEACE AND STILLNESS? HOW CAN I LIVE MY AUTHENTIC TRUTH?
Just as we practice awareness in the mind, so too must be we get in touch with the needs of the physical body. We are taught to be efficient, to multitask, to be as productive as humanly possible, and yet, despite how busy we are, we have become a sedentary species. Connection to our physical body has become optional in modern life, exercise and healthy eating resigned to daily chores. Just as we must be aware of our thoughts, so too must we be mindful of our physical self. Our often neglected bodies need our tender loving care. When you respect your body you heal the mind and cultivate a lasting sense of inner peace and acceptance.

2 1 5 3 4 6 Mindfulness is not only about physically paying attention to the thoughts in your mind and the needs of your body, but also about how you pay attention. When you become more aware through a mindfulness practice, you also cultivate “mindful attitudes” like openness, acceptance, kindness, and love. These attitudes help to open your heart and foster compassion toward yourself and others. Practicing mindfulness and self-compassion can release you from limiting beliefs, connect with your body and help you to open your heart to the compassion within and around you. When you open your heart, you connect to your truth with the gifts of the present moment.

Living mindfully is about connecting with your whole being, bringing awareness and harmony to your mind, body, and heart to ultimately connect with your soul. When you connect with your soul you begin to discover your inner being, and through this discovery, you are able to align with your true purpose. Nourishing your soul by cultivating mindfulness in your life can help you transcend ego, banish unhealthy behaviors, unleash compassion and tune in to your highest purpose. Connect with your soul to discover who you really are, what you were meant to do and how you are an important part of the Universe.

BLUESTAR & COUNSEL OF LIGHT through Ker Cleary
Mindfulness is much easier than you think, but it takes some commitment. One must be willing to practice, and able to hold without judgment, awareness of What Is, as witnessed Here and Now. It is not a special thing. Mindfulness is innate to all beings. Humans, however, are particularly distractable, and so have often lost the key to orienting themselves in this way. You have developed a situation – society, culture, family, workplace, etc. – in which it is more supported to be unaware than aware. Therefore, what do you do with your awareness? When you have awareness but no tools for digesting it, you learn to suppress it. Mindfulness therefore is as much about how to handle awareness as how to develop it. Mindfulness without kindness to oneself and one’s awareness turns easily to criticism and self-loathing. Mindfulness without compassion for others turns easily to nitpicking and continued entitlement to judge. True mindfulness is intentionally married to an open heart, so that whatever is observed – both the phenomena and one’s response to it – are held, lightly and without the need to act or to defend. Therefore mindfulness is as much the practice of unconditional love as anything else.
When you exist in circumstances with no outlet and no tools to manage awareness, when, for instance, you experience things you are taught to repress or deny or project, then awareness becomes the enemy and you’d better not have too much of it. Some of you then become addicts to whatever can dull your senses. Most of you eventually can no longer hold the mask and find yourselves being the “oversensitive one” in your life. This practice of mindfulness, and incorporating it with your practice of tarot, would then involve letting yourself off the hook for anything and everything you perceive. The tarot piece is to help you discern your path forward, while owning who you are and what you experience. This does not mean you never strive to right injustices. It does not imply a passive approach to life. It means that when you are in the movie theater and you sit next to someone wearing strong perfume, and it brings an allergic reaction, you act on it. But you act without increasing the suffering. You don’t need to yell at the smelly person. You don’t need to apologize tearfully to your friend when you ask to move seats. You don’t need to feel bad and you don’t need to make anyone wrong. Just move. And maybe you later go in search of some remedies that can help with your allergies, or maybe you write letters to the editor with a loving plea for less perfume in public spaces, or maybe you start a website to help other chemical sensitives. Anything is possible. Mindfulness means you accept yourself as you are and you remember to take your remedies with you when you leave the house. It means you own your sensitivities and let your friends know you might need to move or switch seats. It means you are calm and loving with yourself and don’t torture yourself or anyone else with your sorrow about being one of those coal mine canary people. Remember you are here for a purpose, but that does not always mean you will enjoy the purpose you serve. -30Ker Cleary’s mission is to help people in need of clarity, support and rebalancing as they travel their life’s path, using channeled guidance, Bach flower remedies, and oracle cards. Manifesto Boho, whether in fashion, in life or in Tarot, represents the essence of the unconventional. Although the Bohemian style spread across the world more than a hundred years ago, it is not only still very much alive, but thriving. Boho is more than an individual’s pursuit of selfexpression, it draws upon the oneness of self, the wholeness of nature and the nothingness of spirituality to open pathways to profound enlightenment and liberation.
